Alabama coach Wade Wallace was from my small hometown of Trenton, Tennessee

His successor at Bama, Frank Thomas, was head coach in my hometown Chattanooga, TN. (UTC)
Guy played QB for Knute Rockne at Notre Dame then coached Bear Bryant at Alabama.

Nice video. As one who fondly recalls the Pac-8, I am a believer that the Pac-Big should have never abandoned their Rose Bowl pact for the playoff. However, I do forget that the Rose Bowl did invite non-Big teams prior to WWII. Thanks for the reminder (go Huskies!)

Great video Jon! I looked at that season....at first I thought, "did the team that tied Washington and beat the 4 horsemen really lose to Drake?".....then I realized this was the year after the 4 horsemen. Still, they beat Red Grange and Illinois 14-0, beat ND 17-0, tied Washington and lost to Drake 12-0. Ouch.

The southern teams placed an inordinate amount of energy on defense, many times punting on 3rd down. Also they championed speed on the offensive line which translated to offensive linemen under 200 pounds. When they came up against a team that had tough and big offensive linemen and defenders that wore down the southern teams. All that changed when Alabama was pretty much an afterthought to the size of Michigan State and Notre Dame in the 50s’and 60’s. It Was almost as if a light bulb went off in Bear Bryant’s head. Thus started the conversion of southern football.

Stanford actually won the Rissman cup in 1927 by domininating Bama for most of the game, with Bama only pulling off a late tie, Stanford also missed an early kick...Just one of Alabama's many self claimed National championships, but Stanford still has the throphy in the case. I've also heard claim that one of the military schools, Army I think, may have had the best case that year.

Self claimed? Other than 1941, those other claims by Alabama are very much legit. They could easily claim 1945, 1966, or 1977 instead of 1941.

Two more points Washington. We'd have never have heard of Alabama and the SEC! What could have been.
