I definitely use big splits, but I also struggle with air flow. I'm going to try different things. I've been placing my splits directly on the fire bricks 🤦🏿🤷🏿♂️. Both my smokehouse firebox didn't last long, melted in the center
@ADHD_Wils yeah, leaving a gap below the fire helps get air flowing through it and clears up the smoke. The biggest problem I have with this set up is you can loose your coal bed if you wait too long to add a split.
Nice work.
Fantastic experimenting! I freaking love firebricks. They really stabilize a vertical smoker well. I use them on my heat deflector plate also.
That's a great idea, thanks!
Thank you. I use fire brick in my pecos. I can use large spilts. I will try the grates.
Let me know if it helps. I've been looking at getting a Pecos or a Brazos.

How do you keep your grates looking brand new?
😂 I just scrub them with a grill brush when I'm done.
