fisherman all my life, but got tired of only being able to fish from shore or if someone was able to bring me on their boat.A few years ago I bought myself a lifetime yukon from wally world to get started kayak fishing, great little yak for a starter. eventually i added a small 24# trolling motor on it, and that was great. As i get older, i realized that i got sore from sitting in the seat all day, no matter what i did or changed, i need to be able to stretch out my legs every so often. Last year I sold my Yukon and picked up a Pond Prowler, and i absolutely love it. Its like a real boat but smaller. I can back to the ramp and load and unload right from the back of my minivan. Its got a 4hp motor on it for cruising around, and a trolling motor for light trolling. Amazing little boat

Not cheap, but I'm a LARGE man and really don't want to swim if I can avoid it. My first 2 times out, I left all the fishing gear at home and just went site seeing. I flipped in a boat wake on round 2. Fortunately, my dad said to find a calm place and flip the yak a few times practicing rolling it back over and climbing back in. Which I did during round 1. When the real thing happened, I was back in the seat within 90 seconds. Start simple and find what works for you. See you out there. I'll be the guy wearing SPF 1000 sunblock.

I have a family of 5 and started a year ago. I started with Crescent LT 2 from Facebook. Then got got Crescent UL and another LT 2 from Facebook.Thank you to all the people who didn't want to play the start cheap or wanted to get Shoalie. I love to fish but over all want the family to go down rivers/Kayak camping, lake paddling, FL spring hoping and Island camping/red fishing. I am so a Crescent Kayak freak! We all go UL backpacking and Crescent has fit right in with what I was looking for. Still love my Jon bass boat but have not had it out since I have had the LT2
Great video! I think people buying just the kayak then deciding accessories as they go is by far the best way. Also agreed get a GOOD paddle if you’re going to be paddling at all!
Great video! I have a Hobie Pro Angler 14, so I've got a heavy one. And I use a Bixpy motor. I only fish small water but I'm old, so the motor gets me out farther. I struggle to keep pared down (even though 90% of the time I throw wacky rig worms) so love the advice!
Just remember that the vast majority of the field with beautiful, expensive rigs that check all the kayak-fishing “must-haves” will get their asses handed to them in any given tournament. In a two-day tournament most are sent home after day 1.
I’m am huge fly fisherman and I just got a bonafide skf117 and nk180 pro. I am switching my fishing to the kayak and lake scene now (mainly for chasing Muskie which are rare in my rivers). I will still go to the rivers for smallmouth and take out the fly fishing raft with the buddies.
I just bought my husband and myself a basic catch 100 for fishing. I'm a newbie to kayaking but I'm a Texas gal who grew up fishing. Hubs not into fishing but loves photography...I have my first trip planned 2 weeks from now. Thank you for your video and the info!
Thanks for sharing you of preparing the right way for beginners I’ve been regretting the first day on the water in a kayak and how much I want it to be battle ready the first day. Honestly what has helped redirect this idea is watching your river adventures and than during the kayak adventure series which has lit a fire under me to prepare and start organizing a ultra light fish and tackle setup for those adventures. So thank you tight lines and this needs a part 2 God bless. One last thing would you or do you use a power pole or anchor wizard on the river?
I don't use an anchor wizard. It's one of the things I own but never really found a need for. A lot of that is having the NK 180 on the Shoalie however. I'm not opposed to a micro power pole though. I've contemplated getting one!

I wish The native 12 five was available when I was buying a kayak. I have everything but live scope. Curious to see what the eagle 9FFS has to offer, waiting for the reviews. One thing I bought that I only used a couple times with the anchor wizard I thought I needed it, but it didn’t really suit for me because I’m always moving.
I did the same with the anchor wizard. Went all in with a setup then ultimately never really used it. Even on the river I find it to be not as useful as I envisioned!
Great video. My opinion would be to stay away from the cheapest kayaks, and look for stability. The next biggest thing would be loading/unloading, transport and storage. I have an old town 136, and use an OTWI trailer. The set up is amazing and I throughly enjoy it! I fish lakes, and would like to get a river kayak also, to open up more fishing areas.
Thanks for all the information. My girlfriend and I just got some cheap pelicans, but definitely wanted to upgrade. Honestly I prefer to paddle instead of wanting a motor/ a paddle drive ive been looking between Vibe and old town.
My Hobie PA14 is a heavy beast and the places I have to launch are often very primitive. That said, wrestling that baby is better than weight lifting at the gym. & pedaling that beast it is better exercise than bike riding and much safer. Haven't been passed by many cars out in my Hobie. I generally take 500 lures out with me and fish 2 of them. What can I say! ? If I want that purple frog and it is at home, not gonna be happy. BTW, I am 74 years old. I KNOW that heavy exercise is gonna keep me alive longer. No motor will ever defile my Hobie.
what tips do you have for big guys (lineman build) who are considering a Kayak? I am looking into one of those modular Kayaks since I have a SUV, not a truck, but not sure how kayks hold up for the tall and big
Plenty of kayaks are super stable for big guys, but in my experience you'll be unhappy with the modular ones. If you really want to go the small route -- look at the inflatable options. Insanely stable. That said -- you can EASILY car top some stable kayaks like the Old Town 120 (non pdl) with ease on an SUV and they'll be great for bigger guys

You can catch a ton of fish, and WIN tournaments out of a bare-bones, sit-in kayak that’s car-topped. Most of this industry is simply marketing BS and greed.

learning how to get back in is a good tool to have. It's gonna happen and you learned how to do it early and the right way!

The 100 isn't too bad as a starter kayak. I've actually fished out of one. It does ok for the pricepoint.
Ive just been using a 10' sit inside kayak with a rod holder.
Simple, but easy to paddle and troll.

@ the inflatable ones are way more puncture proof than many realize. Not perfect but can definitely survive a lot

Yup. I use a 10 footer sit inside kayak with a rod holder set up. Super easy and I've caught a lot of fish with it!
