I still don't get it. No one is that driven as he was at that age. I still can't imagine someone so. and I constantly fret for the history books that had Michael actually nailed that pirochet on his outer toes he greatly lamented not nailing in that performance years later. You have to have lived this to understand the significance of this performance. First, Jermaine left the Jackson 5 in 1975 to remain at Motown. This was the first time in 8 years that the Jackson 5 performed together. And they were still in their youth so those 8 years were like an eternity. Second, the Jackson 5 were the babies of Motown. Most of the acts that performed this night were of performers past their prime. The Jackson 5 electrified the audience with their youthful energy. Lastly, although the video for Billy Jean was already on MTV, most of America did not have cable TV yet. This broadcast TV performance was for the fans who listened to him on the radio and bought his records but could not see his videos. This was our introduction to the New MIchael Jackson.
The fact he did all those older songs, acted like he was tired on the mic thanking everyone, then just busts out Billie Jean like he just started the performance. Legendary!
This one performance raised the vibration of the entire planet,In 1983 no one had ever experienced something like this. This is the night Michael Jackson became the King of Pop
❤❤❤ I remember 16 year old me ... watching it on TV with the family ....that moment when he was about to sing Billie Jean and then it happened a SUPERSTAR named Michael Jackson appeared before our eyes 💥💯❣️
Is it just me or does it seem crazy when you realise that ; - Michael Jackson died 11 years ago - the 90s were 30 years ago - the Jackson 5 are in their 60s time is flying by.
For MJ : Time is flying by much too fast. It takes forever to be 18 y.o., and flies by fast after 40 y.o. I'm 61 y.o. now .. Never thought that #MichaelJackson #Prince #Whitney & #DavidBowie would be gone already .. Never thought #Aretha & #JamesBrown would leave ths soon. Come on ppl, let's appreciate & spread the #Music they left us while making sure they get their due. Doesn't #MichaelJackson deserve #NeverlandRanch to be renovated to the delight of people worldwide? Well, the #MJFam #Moonwalkers & Supporters can do that. It would preserve his short films, videos, appearances, his creative processes, etc. We need to do this. Racism cannot define our heroes, artists, leaders, etc. only we can do that. Let's let @SONY know that we want his short films preserved now. They can offer thm in a set for purchase. Also, support Tito's sons who have really stepped up to preserve their uncle's legacy. Remember, #MJ is not here, but he has left his #Music for us to share. Pls support the remaining members of the #Jackson5 .. Hopefully, we can get the young'uns to help the original members out. Just Dancing & Singing the old songs is a full out workout in itself. Jackie is as fine as ever & still moving 'n' grooving👌🏾but I do notice they need a bit of help with the vocals now. No prob. The next generation can pitch in.. maybe Jermaine's kids since Tito's kids have 3T going on. Well, that's all for me now. Great video👏🏾 #TheJacksons4Ever #TheKingMJ4Ever❤️

The odd thing is, mj actually went back stage and cried to his mom because he thought this performance was fucking terrible, and it turned out to be the performance that made him go from famous singer/actor, to a global icon
Ponz he was mainly that way with his brothers, but as a solo act he was becoming iconic, this performance solidified it, and the success of his Thriller album made him sky rocket beyond that
@@xzack8848 Indeed. Thriller was amazing, imo the Bad album was much better though. 90% of the songs on bad were written by Michael but that's when the media started to spread lies about him bleaching his skin and the oxygen chamber story. If none of that happened I think the Bad album would have succeeded Thriller in sales
As a kid I tried to copy this performance for at least two months before I accidentally did the moon walk. Lol Now I look back and he didn't even get it very good the first time. I wonder if he even planned on doing it the second time, or if he was just trying to do it better. As amazing as he was at dancing, I'm sure he could have done a lot better, but the whole thing was crazy hyped at the time! That moon walk looked like a magic trick to my eyes! I couldn't believe what I was seeing!
Almost forty years later, still one of the greatest television specials ever. Michael was already a superstar. After this performance, he became a legend.
It is true except it was Berry Gordy whom approached Michael about appearing on the show. I heard that Michael was adding the finishing touches on "Thriller" in his studio when Gordy entered.
People today don't realize how monumental that performance was, it was the talk of the country the next day after it aired. I remember there was a news report that said kids all over the country went to school with one glove trying to do the moonwalk in the halls. His performance was nominated for an Emmy, Fred Astaire called him the next day and said you put them on their ass.
THIS MAKES ME THINK ABOUT HOW I WAS BORN IN THE WRONG GENERATION... I'M FUCKING 12 AND I SHOULD HAVE BEEN BORN IN THE 70'S SO I COULD HAVE SEEN THIS LIVE AT LEAST ON TV... WHY DID I HAVE TO BE AROUND TO SEE LIL PUMP AND NOT FRICKIN MICHAEL JOSEPH JACKSON... I KNOW IF I SAW THIS ON TV BEING AIRED LIVE EVERYONE AT MY SCHOOL WOULD BE TRYING TO MOONWALK WITH A GLOVE SAYING HOW TF DID HE DO THAT??? HE'S LIKE A MAGICIAN!!! INSTEAD EVERYONE AT MY SCHOOL IS BLASTING LOUD ASS GUCCI FLIP FLOPS INSTEAD OF STUFF LIKE BAD OR BILLIE JEAN OR SMOOTH CRIMINAL!!! AT LEAST ONE 80'S SONG PEOPLE!!!
It truly was exactly like that and wasn't just the students talking. The teachers were also wild about it. In my music class that day, we didn't get any songs sang. It was an hour long conversation about Michael Jackson.
You are correct. I saw it live on TV at 10 years old, and my brother and I on a school night, were up until midnight practicing this new dance called the Moonwalk!
RIP Tito Jackson (October 15, 1953 - September 15, 2024), aged 70 And RIP Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009), aged 50 You both will be remembered as legends.
I still remember watching this in 1983. The neighbors were in our lounge with their kids. Michael broadcasts were always events. I miss those days. Rest in Peace MJ...
+BLAKE MCCORMICK yup. The background vocals in the J5 concert were lip synced. So was MJs Billy Jean performance. Pretty damn obvious. It's the exact single track. No effort to hide it
It is well-known that Mike was not going to perform with his brothers that night unless Berry Gordy allowed him to do Billie Jean as a solo performance. Mike was a genius. The performance made him a megastar overnight.

Thanks God it didn’t exist. Otherwise more than half of the audience would be filming it instead of simply contemplating this one in a lifetime performance from the King!
Right same there in France, from where I am. When they broadcast BJ from Motown 25 then Victory tour and Thriller film on french TV, french kids got nuts and talked about that at school just like the landing of an ET on earth.

Agreed. I envy my parents because they attended Jackson concerts in the 70s and 80s. My mom was apart of a 70s show when fans rushed the stage. Similar to the American dream Jackson's movie
I watched as this aired. I was 14 at the time. This performance was ELECTRIFYING!!! This was the spark of Michael Jackson's superstardom. And, Billie Jean has always been, and will always be my favorite MJ song.
Will never forget this night. I was 13. Ran over to my friends house afterward to find out if he watched it too. We immediately tried to remember everything he did and for the rest of the school year, everybody was imitating those moves. That night was electric. Still get chills watching this. I really hope the National Museum of African American History gets this outfit - it's right up there with America's greatest icons.
This was straight up epic. I was in 7th grade when this happened. I remember the next day at school all anyone could talk about was "did you see Michael Jackson doing the moonwalk last night, he looked like he was walking on air". Break dancing has just come out and this appearance turned it into a nuclear bomb. For the next few years, Mike and break dancing were the biggest things in pop culture. Iconic moment right here.
In Australia this performance actually made the news. No one could believe that someone as shy and child like could produce such a show stopping performance.
I have this video permanently saved on "Watch Later" and have come back to watch this multiple times over the years. I watched this on British Terrestrial TV when it first happened and it takes me back to my childhood and when the world was sane and true superstars existed. I must have watched this hundreds of times and it never gets old. Rest in peace MJ and Tito.
I was 7. I'm not sure if I saw this but I remember sitting through Star wars at school to see the full length thriller music video. That was awesome.Worth the wait.

If you're too young to remember, on this night, Michael had already been very very famous for nearly 15 years. But after this performance.....HE WAS LIFTED INTO THE STRATOSPHERE by himself! Every other person who thought that they were stars could only look up to him and just say WOW!

How bad was racism back then? Billie Jean was already released and a huge radio hit. But MTV still refused to play the video (or virturally any black artist for that matter). After this performance, the head of Sony called MTV and said if they didn't start playing it, he was yanking all Sony artists from MTV rotation. The rest was history......

One of the greatest moments in American history. This was when Michael kicked that door down and said “I’m the king, now” and he proved that he would forever be the king.
Christian Frazier i don't think he's the king anymore. He got so humiliated and stigmatised with the pedo allegations that apart from blacks, not many regard him as king anymore
People who weren’t alive or old enough to remember when the Billie Jean performance first aired, canNOT understand how HUGE of a moment it was. It was an instant cultural reset and everything changed. MJ doing the Moonwalk was the greatest pre-Internet, pre-social media “viral” moment that I can remember.
It was an iconic moment in history for sure! It was SO huge that those of us living outside of the US had VHS cassettes sent to us and families + friends gathered to watch as an occasion. We are so accustomed now to the moonwalk, but at the time we had no idea what had just happened - was the floor moving??!! Did he have miniature wheels under his shoes :-) It was an unforgettable and phenomenal cultural moment
But why only in this moment? Was it the first time ever they heard Billie jean? Had it not been released as a single previously? Was the thriller album not yet released at the time of this performance?
That is a matter of opinion and one's musical tastes.... Would you place MJ on a higher tier than George Michael vocally? Maybe "Got To Be There" is MJ's best vocal offering, "One More Try" easily counters that. With all the controversy surrounding MJ, what of his personality do we really know? As fantastic dancer as MJ was, 30+ years of the Moonwalk leaves one wondering if something new is coming anytime soon.....

Agreed. Unfortunately he looks awful in a lot of peoples eyes as a result of his skin disease and his nose surgery. It's a shame cause he was a great looking guy. He couldn't control his skin but I'll never understand the nose. What's worse is that Janet and Latoya got the same nose after seeing his. Like didn't you see that it didn't look right? We're they trying to make him feel better?
This performance gave birth to the “Michael Jackson hysteria”. Before this, he was a known and respected youngster entertainer, but after this the entire world lost its crap and MJ’s fame skyrocketed. Motown 25 was the decisive moment
Jamie, funny... the same company that couldn't SEE his Global Superstardom. without knowing it, helped to launch it. Another Artist at the same time who should have been a Superstar...was El Debarge. Motown couldn't SEE that either.
I’ll never forget the day MJ passed. It seemed like the whole world went dark. This was the only time that I saw grown men break down in tears; his music was playing everywhere. A lot of people didn’t understand; he was the first young super, super star of the African American community. We had never heard a voice like that from one so young…… and maybe never will….
He wasn’t just the first super, super star of the African American community, he was the first super, super star of the entire world! :) I can’t think of anyone in existence, alive or dead, who even comes close to MJ. He is the musical version of Jesus. He was quite literally the chosen one when it comes to music. He’s further than the King, he’s literally the Jesus of music. In 2000 years time, his music and his dance will still be celebrated by the world and will be of historic legendary status, just as he already is now. I can’t imagine how happy African Americans must feel to have Michael Jackson as one of their own. You just cannot deny the RHYTHM they have instilled in them. Jackson was peak everything though. He didn’t just become the best out of the African American community, he became the best out of everyone. He changed the world. I mean, can you imagine going to an alternate universe and finding out Michael Jackson never existed? Even with his passing, he’s made such a huge impact on the world that you could never picture one again without him in it!

Michael was already a global icon. This performance shot him WAY beyond that.
Just imagine how perfectionist he was😌. Really The King of Pop 👑🙏🙏.
As a kid I tried to copy this performance for at least two months before I accidentally did the moon walk. Lol

They stink, can't sing, can't dance anywhere near the Jacksons or other old school acts, and lip sync to every show, I honestly don't know how they have so many people that love them? I would not buy a Taylor Swift album or pay ten cents for a live show if I had a choice of doing that or spending ten years in prison
At 3:08 when the camera pans to the young man watching in awe and fascination is most satisfying reality of MJ impact on generations over many years up to now. What an epic performer! He gave all...
I've searched forever for that clip! I know I saw it as it happened and didn't imagine it and I just stumbled across it tonight
Yeah at the end of the day this is what is what music is all about, sending a message with meaning that makes people happy & inspires.
1983 - Goosebumps at the age of 7 when he moonwalked
2020 - Goosebumps still, at the age of 43
Man!, I miss this guy!
ME TOO! GONE TO SOON!
Man! Who shows up to court? With P.J.'s on! You just can't make this stuff up! Be careful how you make fun of people! Remember MJ had a Black Mask on. We thought this man done lost his mind! He knew something back then. Look at us today! Wearing Mask. Lol
You’re a real one
Me too
Same same!!! I was 11 or 12. Now I'm 48. Same goosebumps. Same heartbeat.
How many standing ovation can you get in one single performance? The Jackson 5 medley was already special enough to be remembered in music history, but then little Michael became Michael the Jackson and world history was made.
Who’s here in august 2024?

Michael Jackson - The greatest entertainer and artist of all time.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No question!
Yes. I miss him so much. 🙁
So true. No one will compare ever. Long live the King of Pop
THE ONE AND ONLY MR MICHAEL JACKSON
Michael Jackson could sing, dance and not to forget... he was very handsome!! 😍🥰
Yesssss superrrrrr
YES, HE WAS A HANDSOME MAN
Yes, very handsome!
Agree
Michael left it all on the stage!...Performers like this don't exist anymore!
E.B Jombo Fred Astaire called him the next day and basically told him that! He congratulated Michael and told him he put everyone else on their ass!

Music and moves from another galaxy. Michael was incredible. Proud to have grown up in such times.
We are all talking about Michael Jackson but can we realize how legendary THE JACKSONS were plz ? One of the best bands in the world.
I adore the J5. They were magical together. I loved when Jermaine sang his parts. I loved watching them dance. And Tito could play that guitar.
Indeed
I was lucky to see Jackson 5 in Brisbane Australia Brilliant!!💙💛💜💚💙❤
@@debporter8114 lucky you!
You mean *THE* best band ever
This performance gave birth to the “Michael Jackson hysteria”. Before this, he was a known and respected youngster entertainer, but after this the entire world lost its crap and MJ’s fame skyrocketed.
Motown 25 was the decisive moment
Jamie, funny... the same company that couldn't SEE his Global Superstardom. without knowing it, helped to launch it. Another Artist at the same time who should have been a Superstar...was El Debarge. Motown couldn't SEE that either.
The Off The Wall album already did that. This just took him to an even higher level.
You can see in his jackson 5 performance he has an energy like:"these mf's dpnt even know what im about to drop"

Yes.. I was one of those grown men in tears. I was 56 at the time of his passing.. I couldn't believe it.. 😢🙏🏾👑🎤🎶❤️
He wasn’t just the first super, super star of the African American community, he was the first super, super star of the entire world! :)
I can’t think of anyone in existence, alive or dead, who even comes close to MJ.
OMG! I still remember where I was when I heard he died. I was shocked and so sad.
@@TheUpdateContent I’ve never seen how I feel about Michael Jackson described so adequately! I don’t even say this as a huge fan, but your description is truly what he was. It’s hard to describe to younger generations who are into Taylor Swift, and Bruno Mars, just above and beyond Michael Jackson was during that time. Not to take anything from those artists. However, I have never seen another artist where it was normal for someone’s grandma, their mother, themselves, and their kids, to all like the same artist!
Don't play the race card. MJ was above that. He UNIFIED us.
I'm feeling so grateful to be able to sit here & choose this to watch so easily. What a piece of Art!

Do the people who were in the audience that night realize how fortunate they were to witness such greatness first-hand? This will never happen again, it's history.
They were celebrities too
It was such a full circle moment for them because they watched him grow up.. the Motown family were so proud of him
omgg right!! smh
Michael owned that stage! Most charismatic performer ever.
Greatest tv performance since Elvis's Jail House Rock-that had the same effect.
Facts. He was truly something amazing
close second to Elvis
@@nealmoody782 I say they are both equally brilliant. Why does one have to be better than the other? When you surpass a certain level of talent, the concept of superiority becomes obsolete.
phhhhhhh.........
In July of 2024 I am still watching this for the thousandth time and still amazed... An amazing talent and I'm glad I got to see them all live from the early 70's in Madison Square Garden to Michael's solo tours...
A moment of silence for the person who had to perform after this.

Lol. Hilarious (and true) comment!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I remember my whole neighborhood came outside and we were all dancing in the street for ten straight minutes after this performance!! This was by far the greatest performance in television history!!!
I remember life before cell phones when people would do stuff with other people instead of cameras.
I’m 71 and I’ve seen Elvis the Beatles when they appeared on tv. But this was the best I’ve ever seen, I mean they stole the show from the greats.

Here for Tito, god rest his soul, he’s with Michael now.🥲
I am here watching it now, in memory of Tito, and Michael, and all the Brothers! I Really enjoyed the Jackson 5, then Michael Jackson, and his music!
Michael Jackson really was a beautiful man. Just look at him. He’s like a rare flawless diamond in human form.
Absolutely right ♥️
Yes indeed!
@Ammon Moshe I respect your opinion that America destroyed him but I don't think he had feminine tendencies. He just wasn't able to completely identify himself with so much hatred around. He couldn't find his real own self with people complementing and judging him. That's how America and media destroyed him.
Poor mike;(
@Ammon Moshe chill out dude it’s just Michael Jackson, tf he do to you?
Ammon Moshe you are severely deluded.. clothing doesn’t have a gender, and how does someone perform like a pedophile?
It's when he went from Michael and the Jackson 5 to MICHAEL JACKSON! As the Jacksons leave the stage they just didn't leave but Michael went it to the stratosphere and cemented himself as LEGEND...and he never came down again. Truly historic moment.
Incredible epic comment!!
Stenbrotsgatan Exactly!❤️
Stenbrotsgatan He owned this performance!! Good for you Michael!!!
