  • SOG author and historian Jason Hardy sits down with us for an hour to talk about how he got interested in Special Forces history and the men of MACV SOG. His 14th book is out with a 15th at the printers. Jason really holds all the keys when it comes to SOG history knowledge. I learned a great deal and I am sure you will to.

Being the kid of a MACVSOG soldier, I was soooooo appreciative at the wealth of information that is out there. Thanks for getting the history out there!

A repeating question I have: During the length of SOG's existence, how many Americans actually served in SOG?

I asked because I had seen as low as 800, and high as 2,000. Over it's lifetime, SOG was a very tiny percentage of our military in the war. @@budgibson185

People were shifted around a bit. When first at C&C I was strap hangered to a team. No hairy missions, just proly to evaluate me. Then dropped on to a hatchet force company S&D, again no critical mission. Correctly evaluating me as green, I was sent to the Yard camp of FOB2. At the time there was only one American in the whole camp, Sgt Dew.. I spent a few overnighters there, then got assigned there. Over the following weeks, more Americans showed up. One at a time. They were just shifting folks all around. Personnel records were probably very iffy for who was and wasn't there. @@budgibson185

It was a time when the cia didn't have a ground branch and only SF, particularly the army side SF was allowed to apply for SoG and operate under the CiA
