- In this episode of A New York Minute, a legendary literary speakeasy bar and restaurant so popular that when prohibition ended it never needed to put up a sign! For nearly 100 years, this celebrated drinking hole in Greenwich Village hosted some of the most famous authors of their day, many of whom left signed copies of their dust covers to decorate the walls. Chumley's is so iconic that "86 It" - a phrase used in restaurants to cut something from the menu - derives from the rear exit used to flee the illegal speakeasy during the days of prohibition.

I am so surprised to learn that the term 86 it came from here! So cool!
Used to go there ...long ago. The way I would take people in was down the alley way, past the garbage cans to the unmarked door. People were always very surprised. Was a great romantic, woody type bar space.
Same. Loved taking out of town visitors through the alley into the bar. Some great memories there.
Wikipedia has a good history of it. Seems they reopened....but then closed permanently in 2020. Would have been nice to go to the auction of contents and buy a small cocktail table.
woW. I learned something new about Chumley's in New York as well as the term "86". Why doesn't someone re-open Chumley's and fix up the place? Looks cool. Wish I could see the inside.

The chimney was part of the foundation,I believe. Hard to replace.
I loved it. It was a true NY institution. I used to take my writing group there, and we loved it. What a spot.
Us army regs, section 86, refers to AWOL, also an attributed source of 86ing something.

Apparently Brendan Behan met Hemingway there and tied one on for the ages. I'd be shocked if those two didn't drink the place dry. If anyone has never read Behan's work you're missing out.
Amazing! -- I was there a couple of times in the 1980s, and never knew the place had a name! (I was just told to go to the place at Bedford and Barrow.)

I heard the term "86' it came from a variety of places, one being the height of a standard outside door in inches in the early 20th century.

I remember reading that "86 it" was Cockney slang for "Nix it"
The hairs on my arms went straight when I learned that. The number of times I have uttered those words from the pass.
It also now means to kick someone permanently out of your business, at least on the West Coast

Well that's strange, I work in engineering and "86 it" is a lockout device if something is not working properly. I thought this term was coined during the second industrial revolution.
There are a variety of interesting origin stories for the term, but according to Jef Klein in "The History and Stories of the Best Bars of New York" Chumley's is the real deal! Other fun ones include that it rhymes with the word "nix," the F-86 fighter jet in the Korean War, and the end of the elevated NY Subway at 86th Street where the conductor would "86" any drunks who had passed out on the train. Would love to know the history of the second industrial revolution story, do you happen to know any more about it?
86 means more than just cutting something from a menu.

Umm all historians do no agree that 86 came from this. Not even close.
This is nothing more than an unsubstantiated claim. Nobody knows for sure where 86 came from.
