Bro I was also 9 at that time and it was for me to my first championship where i understood the fight , adrenaline and cheering for my country, as Croatian . I can recall almost every Croatian game from that tournament . So much energy , so much joy and sadness, so much emotions in every game . German team had lots of big accomplishments after that tournament , you had your moments of joy afterwards. ❤️

I predicted few teams to win the world cup in 2018 and then I predicted Croatia cannot be underestimated and they may surprise everyone. Sure enough, they finished second. They had bad bounces in the final and they had teammates problems. Still a great finish.

I get what you're coming from but you have to put into context. There are literally cameras everywhere now and VAR is there to scrutinise everything over and over, a lot of players are holding back now for that reason, it's doesn't mean they are inherently less aggressive. I do agree that football is way too soft now but then again back in 98 players were less concerned if they injured another player.
I'll never forget this match. It was full of bad blood. We wanted to pay the Germans back for that loss at the Euro 1996 in England. And boy, we did, with interests. Well back in 1996 Croatia only had themselves to blame, because on that occasion they still considered the tactical foul play equally important as playing the actual game effectively. Not that by now they abandoned the former, or even by 1998 - Wörns was all but Hamrin'ed by Suker, let's be honest here - but at least meanwhile they've learned the latter.

I was like 15-16 back then...I remember after this game my whole town (eastern Croatia) was out in the streets! Never ever seen anything like that again...not even when we were playing in the WC finals 2018.
I remember that match quite well. It was a good example how one event can shift a whole match. Until the red card, Germany, although not especially convincing, were clearly superior. Croatia were almost not happening in attack. Then the double blow of red card and Jarny‘s wonder shot shortly before the break changed the whole match.

Even for today's standard, that red card was harsh, in fact, even if the referee gave it, I'm sure the VAR would've rescinded it. It changed the scope of the match, Germany were slightly better up until that point but they did miss some sitters which is entirely on them. I think Vogts also made the mistake on still relying on quite a number of players whom were already part of the side that won the World Cup back in Italia 90. It's funny that Croatia was found guilty of doing the exact same in Euro 24 by relying on players has-been from Russia 18.
@elmariachi11 we are too small and don't have too many options to replace so many players. It's not a regular occurrence that you can have players from Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona in your midfield. Germany has more registered players than we have citizens. Just saying.
All three would have resigned from the team anyway after the WC. The whole team was criticized, e.g. defender Jörg Heinrich for turning his body away from Jarni‘s shot at the first goal, and all the other defenders for not being anywhere close.

I remember that match quite well. It was a good example how one event can shift a whole match. Until the red card, Germany, although not especially convincing, were clearly superior. Croatia were almost not happening in attack. Then the double blow of red card and Jarny‘s wonder shot shortly before the break changed the whole match.

Even for today's standard, that red card was harsh, in fact, even if the referee gave it, I'm sure the VAR would've rescinded it. It changed the scope of the match, Germany were slightly better up until that point but they did miss some sitters which is entirely on them.
I think Vogts also made the mistake on still relying on quite a number of players whom were already part of the side that won the World Cup back in Italia 90. It's funny that Croatia was found guilty of doing the exact same in Euro 24 by relying on players has-been from Russia 18.

@elmariachi11 we are too small and don't have too many options to replace so many players. It's not a regular occurrence that you can have players from Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona in your midfield. Germany has more registered players than we have citizens. Just saying.

And Croatia did have skillful players, but they always played hard and tough football. Asanović was a great technician with the ball, but he knew how to use his elbows in tackles.
