If the Australian Government is smart, they will retrofit lithium ion batteries as part of the upgrade program. As long as they haven't damaged the hull to much and the welders are half decent they should be okay. Considering i worked in an industry that made pressure vessels at one stage I'm not talking shit ;-)
The essential are the Map , major military and industrial targets and ranges and transit times. A diesel sub does not seem a good answer. The most common regional potential opposition subs are diesel, Russian and Chinese Kilos and Songs with a 3 hour burst speed of 28 knots and possibly very fast torpedoes. The most effective way of attacking subs is from the air from MPA, P8, Helo with torpedoes but probably more effectively heavyweight air launched depth charges or even nuclear depth charges . The major role envisaged for the RAN subs seems to be intelligence gathering and anti terrorist operations and land parties for scouting or sabotage, Australia may much more direct capabilities from its frontline defence investments given the scale of the potential threats and the apparent evidence of the recent Vostok exercise that Russia and China are once again cooperating in a direct military alliance
Its got me beat how this country is behind the times and not using nuclear equipment!!!!!! Believe they are doing a refit of all the Collins class submarine fleet during summer?? All will be fitted out with flyscreens!!!!!! Lol

Yes and they have been for a number of years.
I hope they use the Japanese lithium ion submarine batteries on the collins class upgrade.
They would be a huge improvement.

Do you realise that diesel/electric subs are the hunter killers of the submarine world.
We don’t need nuclear. These are quieter and have long enough range
We are getting nucleur ones but at the moment Australias Collins class submarines have been named one of the most feared in the world
