Digging tunnels is a big no no, but kids will do it regardless. We just have to keep an eye on them and dig them out when their tunnels collapse on them.

Great, you finally got here! This has been maybe the coldest winter in 20 years and in Helsinki it can feel very cold because of the wind from the sea. The Baltic sea is less salty than the oceans and it can freeze easier because of that. You really must visit Helsinki in July or early August. I guarantee that it's a lovely summer city and looks like a different place with its green parks etc.

@@JacobandJennyTravel great! Agreed! I hope I'll be around then. In July I usually have my summer vacation and travel somewhere, but sometimes I'm also here in Helsinki area. I have a plan to drive to the middle Norway next summer. I haven't explored the area between Trondheim and Bodø yet, and I want to see it. I'm not just sure yet if that will happen next summer or not.

At around 3:30 the statue is for the national poet, J.L.Runeberg. He wrote in Swedish, his native language. The nationalist movement that finally lead to independence in 1917 was lead by Swedish speakers for the reason that all higher education in the 1800's was in Swedish. This of course was a consequence of Finland earlier being part of Sweden, as you explained.

Market halls in Kauppatori or Hakaniemi are worth to see. Also the wooden houses of Käpylä (Pohjolankatu street), or the ole town of Porvoo.

14:03 Hesburger has been a trouble in recent weeks due to Foodora's poorly planned campaign offering a 50% discount on Hesburger orders to pro users. This led to a surge in orders, causing staff in every restaurant to be overworked as they try to fulfill the increased demand. This may explain slow service. 😃

Welcome to Helsinki! Lived here my whole life (not in city center though.) I would recommed trying Bell pepper mayo (paprikamajoneesi) with fries in Hesburger, it's the best! Hesburger should be around the same price anywhere in Finland except for a few special places. McDonald's has actually gotten more expensive than Hesburger - used to be the other way around. I'm sure you have a lot to do, but if you want to explore the city, metro is a fun way to see parts of the city. In the center it goes underground, but when you get out of the center, it will mostly travel above ground. If you take the metro to Vuosaari from the central railway station, you can walk over to Cafe Kampela which is a small cafe by the frozen sea. Also nice place in the summer. It is also possible to see auroras in Helsinki, but solar activity has been low past couple weeks. And it's not gonna be the same as up North.

Helsinki is a fine city, I lived there for almost 40 years on that Katajanokka island where the Orthodox Cathedral stands. It may be an exotic place in winter, but it is really a summer city with the sea and beautiful islands just minutes from the center.
And like they say, the best thing about Helsinki is that it is so conveniently close to Stockholm....and it is truly close; If you fly you will land at Arlanda at the very minute your flight started - there is a one hour time difference, though. The Stockholm ferry you pointed out is still luxorious, If not quite new any more. Definitely worth a cruise.

20 mins sounds very long for Hesburger, but maybe I mostly order foods that are commonly ordered so they have them ready in the buffer. Seems like the restaurant was empty, so maybe that's another reason for the long delay.

There's very little salt in that water, it's barely even sea water. Also salt affects the freezing temp only slightly, 0.2 - 0.8 Celsius degrees.
Driving in the winter is easy. Just use winter tires and keep the accelerating/breaking and direction changes suble. The hard part is when you can't see any of the road markings.

Visit Tampere (in summer) - a city between two lakes.
Finland is the happiest country in the world. Tampere is the happiest region in Finland (the happiest is the small town next to Tampere - Pirkkala). Tampere is at the center of the world's happiness =)
From Helsinki to Tampere it is about 2 hours (by car or train).
    Tampere attractions:
    - Nokia arena (ice hockey games and large cultural events)
    - Näsinneula (restaurant and observation tower)
    - Pyynikki's gravel ridge (the world's largest ridge)
    - Pyynikki's observation tower (restaurant and observation tower)
    - Tammerkoski (a rapids between two lakes, in the middle of the city)
    - and Tapola's black sausage... must taste! =)
Tampere is Finland's "Manchester" (Manse). Old factory town.

That Jacob was hit by the snow from the roof doesn't sound very good (unless it was just the powder snow carried by the wind). There can be some ice also falling so it's not safe to be right below. Wasn't there any fence or line to prevent going near the building?

    • @joona2000
      @joona2000 9 месяцев назад

Exactly. There should be somebody on the street to warn out the snow droppers with whistle when there are pedestrians coming, so they don't drop any on the peoples head. I wonder why there were't any, there should've been. That's the safety norm here. Luckily no harm done.

Thankfully there was no ice in it, just light snow 🙌🏼❄️ we saw tons of fences around areas, but not in this particular area. Thanks for watching :)

0:45 the church is in neo-Gothic style which appeared in the mid-18th century but was most popular in the 19th century . The city itself (Helsinki) was founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa (Swedish king) .

@@xhorus88 Russia has never built anything except corruption, lawlessness and banditry. The Russian Empire was ruled not by Russians but by Mongols and Germans. The history of Russia is history written on the orders of the Romanovs, who took over the throne from their predecessors in the 17th century, and on their orders in 1682, the family trees of the Boyars, including the Romanovs, were burned on Red Square in Moscow. Later, in the 18th century, the situation only worsened. Peter I invited the Germans to rewrite Russian history. And it was the Germans who committed mass forgery. Apparently, convoys full of confiscated monastic books and other written materials arrived in the newly built St. Petersburg, but all traces of them have since disappeared. Architecture was also devastated, frescoes were pulled down, inscriptions were scraped, and, one might say, material relics of the past were destroyed.

All Hesburger spiced mayo sauces are amazing that they use in their burgers! However the wait times are pretty long as their employees are quite lazy😂 Also quite expensive considering its still pretty crap quality food.
Also probably right call not going to Suomenlinna in the winter if you maybe are planning to come back later. Its cold af there in the winter often. In my opinion Helsinki is overall way better in the summer. Tons of small parks and a lot of sea shore where to hang out. And mid summer the nights are really light so you can be outside at mid night and its not dark at all.

Finnish is a rather new language in Finland, it was pretty much only spoken in the eastern parts of Finland while the southern and western parts were completely Swedish speaking. Just 100 years ago Swedish was spoken by almost 90% of people in Helsinki. Swedish was made the official language in the 13th century while Finnish wasn't an official language until 1919 and in 1922 both Swedish and Finnish were written into the constitution as equal national languages.

Finnish actually became an official language in 1863, but Swedish remained the main language of higher education until the early 1900's. Only very narrow strips of the country by the coast were Swedish speaking. In the early 1900's, roughly 13% of the Finnish population had Swedish as their native language; today the figure is a bit over 5%. To be more precise about Helsinki, in 1870 the figeres were 74% Swedish, 26% Finnish, but already in 1890 it was roughly 50% - 50%. You need to go further back to history to reach the point of 90% Swedish.

So you think southwestern Finland was empty when crusading Swedish colonists arrived 12th century? Swedish is youngest language in Finland by far. Finns populated southern Finland already in Roman times. Claiming that Finnish is a new language in Finland is ludicrous.
