Very informative! I also want to commend you for: 1. No irritating, bombastic intro music or silly/uber-macho persona 2. Succinct, no-nonsense explanation with detailed info, 3. Well-filmed (lighting, camera-angles) Great job!
I just purchased this planer and find this presentation is by far better than several others videos I watched . Provides more detail on the set up and operation of any I have viewed. Nate does an excellent job in the presentation, he could have been hired by Dewalt. As with the other presentations, Nate far exceeds those.
I just bought this a few days ago and sent the first boards through it last night. Awesome machine. I was using reclaimed wood from pallets. Very smooth. I didn't adjust the infeed or outfeed tables. No snipe.
Just ordered this today to plane hundreds of pallet wood planks. I now feel armed and ready get to work once the unit arrives thanks to your thorough presentation. Appreciate your efforts.
I just bought this a few days ago. It's still in the box, untouched. I cannot thank you enough for such an informative video. I will make sure and read the manual and see that both sides of the machine are level.
I've owned my DW734 for a couple of years and love it. Your video was very informative and should be a big help to anyone who is a new user or thinking about buying one. I wish it had been available back when I bought mine. Thanks.
Excellent, informative & easy to understand. I have watched some pretty good videos on this tool & yours is the best. Just purchased & received mine recently. Have not put it to work yet. Waiting on a better dust collection set up. Hoping Santa delivers on that deal!
Thanks for your review of this planer, I think this is the one I’ll buy. BTW regarding snipe yes it’s not what we want on the finished product but there are planing techniques to work around snipe. Those techniques deserve a video unto themselves.
Excellent review and explanation. I ordered one from home Depot for $399 with a tool kit type box as part of the deal. Feb 2022. Can wait to use my 734.
Thank you for a very straight-forward introduction to this tool and basic overview. Just the kind of information I need for my research.

Hello my friend. The most widely used thickness machine for woodworking. Dewalt produces great products. The machine I was thinking of buying too. Thank you very much for the introduction and information. See you. Stay healthy and safe. Merry Christmas. Big greetings ....
I need to make 2 boxes to put a 734 in for checked baggage on an airline. Can the base be removed easily? Can you tell me the exact measurements (LxWxH) of the base as well as the dimensions of the unit without the base? Thanks much
No open end wrench any more. The latest Dewalt dw734 does not come with the 10mm/8mm wrench, or place to put it. Its called Type 20 i think as opposed to type 1.
1:39 Yes is says that, but when I used a shop vac it did a good job. I assume they don't what someone using a shopvac with a low cfm as it will clog so they just black list all shopvacs to avoid the confusion.
@@natelarge I used to use a shop vac with my planer and it removed the chips fine. What I did notice as a difference is I would get tons of static shocks from the metal body of the planer when using the shop vac, and after moving to a DC I receive no shocks. Weird.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Snipe, in woodworking, is a noticeably deeper cut on the leading and/or trailing end of a board after having passed through a thickness planer or jointer.
I did. Took about 30 minutes with many test paths. Doing micro adjustments. I dailed it in so that it is very hard to detect when you are looking at it. It may be possible to get to 100% gone but 99% was good enough for me. I will probably do a video on it now that you got me thinking. 🤔
Hi I have been looking for a thicknesser and I'm thinking of makita or this and I live in UK so the prices are the same at 550£ which one do you think is the best for the money
I am at this point too + a bit of a Makita fanboy but IDK... Which did you go for as a matter of interest? I had purchased the Triton which is well-reviewed but my unit spiked at startup causing tripping and I had a nightmare sending it back, so it's a more 'established' brand this time around. I believe the Makita is easier to adjust the feed tables on (will prob. use a custom bed anyhow) and is a wee bit quieter but the Dewalt has lesser scolloping and a higher degree of precision in the cut?
Why should the snipe got away by adjusting the table? The wood got pushed up by the blade. So there must be something holding the wood down to prevent it. The table can not hold down anything. So adjusting the table seems useless to me.
It has to do with the angle of attack. The feed table will lift the wood so that it can't teeter up and into the blade when it is being held by only one roller. I have adjusted my feed tables and was able to remove 98% of the snipe. With a little more tuning I should get it perfect.
@@natelarge I believe you are both right to some extent. You will not eliminate snipe through adjusting the feed tables alone - mitigate yes. To eliminate you'll need support (sacrificial piece/end). There's a direct correlation between the amount of snipe on all these benchtop thicknessers & the gap between rollers and the blades ie. that gap is unsupported and pressure is being applied on only one end. Least that's understanding?
For the money, it's not too terrible but still expensive. I've owned older planers and they were great. Much better than the crap pushed out these days. The pressed feed platens are pure junk but so far, I haven't found anything better. I think I'll wait to see what comes along before I throw five-six hundred bucks away. Thank you for sharing.

Lack of music was a HUGE relief :D

I got a fixer-upper one that I plan on first using for just the same purpose, reclaimed pallet wood. Excited to try it out after watching this!

Watching this for third time. Excellent video. I think I’m going to pull the trigger and get this for Christmas.
I purchased one today, and I was looking for a good video about it, thanks man that's really helpful.

I just ordered the same one today with the Dewalt box included. Took another $50 off you applying for their credit card. Couldn't turn down that deal👍
I’m thinking on buying one as well. But If you don’t mind me asking, what is took kit type? Thank you
@@birdsnest7883 It's a Dewalt tool box. It's item number DWST24070 if you want to look it up.

Your video was really informative, helped me decide to go with this one. Thank you
Awesome video! I have this model and love it!
Great to hear!
Just bought mine
You really are great at explaining
Definitely on my list ‘to get’ and I wonder if a long sled would help with the snipe.
I was able to tune it in to get rid of the snipe
Thanks for the video. Got mine today and your video was very helpful.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of the DW734 planer. You made it easy for me to understand and I'm stoked I found this video. Ab
Just got this bad boy for xmas. Cant wait to make some wood chips
Got mine yesterday. Excited myself to get projects going
Just considering one of these
Always like your videos, Nate
Very helpful. Thanks
Thank you..this was very helpful!

thats quite a large planner. generally i use a notebook or my smartphone for planning, but this is certainly impressive! thank you!
lol thanks; I will need to update the thumbnail and description.

What exactly is “sniping”?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Snipe, in woodworking, is a noticeably deeper cut on the leading and/or trailing end of a board after having passed through a thickness planer or jointer.
Any one know how it handles hardwoods?
I ran oak through it and it came out smooth
This is identical to the Harbor Freight Hercules planer. I paid $300 for this unit.
how tall is the unit including the handle?
Sorry I no long have the unit otherwise I would measure it for you.
How did you reduce the snipe?
I did. Took about 30 minutes with many test paths. Doing micro adjustments. I dailed it in so that it is very hard to detect when you are looking at it. It may be possible to get to 100% gone but 99% was good enough for me. I will probably do a video on it now that you got me thinking. 🤔

What's the difference with Dewalt 733 & 734??? Looks the same!
sorry i don't know
The blade amount different tha is it.

Got one yesterday for $449.00 with $25.00 off that price with discount included.
My only beef is that the blades dull and chip way too fast.

Disposable blades.👎
