That’s actually a pretty impressive costume for 1907. Most mascots don’t look much better in modern times.
Do some look better? Haven't seen any.
I thought the same. This structure inside the head to move the eyes and mouth are rare to see. I only saw them with disney characters. It's very expensive.
@@vaderetro264 The most expesive ones do look a bit more polished. The facial expression at least. Everything depends on the character design. Each one has it's difficulty to make. I bet they couldn't do a great Iron Man or Buzzlightear costume.
I was thinking the same thing..lol👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Probably because they used actual animal skin to make this instead of plastic.
The pig costume has moving ears, moving eyes, independently moving eyelids, a laughing face, a moving mouth, a moving nose and a moving tongue. All controlled by either the right or left hand. How this actor is able to shift between everything and really bring the pig to live is amazing. This is very much ahead of its time.
I would love to see someone try recreate this as they did it back then..
That’s what was impressing me too. I bet Jim Hensen would have been impressed.
@@GoofballLtG This is where all those ideas came from.
I wonder what has since become of the pig costume.
Very ahead of its time for 1907, so impressive!

That costume is EXTREMELY impressive for 1907. I mean, even decades later when Disneyland first opened, those mascot costumes absolutely paled in comparison.
Really impressive considering the closest things to come decades latter were the costume Muppets like Big Bird or Sweetums
why do people think that in 1907 we lived in a dark age? there were many impressive costumes being made for 100's of years before this, theater isnt new at this time
@@perry92964 "Ahead of its time" so funny.
This is supposed to be a special effect for a movie and not a "mascot for kids". You could compare it to robots or CGI. Also: Please stop comparing everything with the USA. It was pretty much of its time for European/French standards.
Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. It's just that in my own personal experience, one does not expect to see something of this caliber from so long ago. Obviously, I have a limited perspective as an American with little theatrical exposure. In America, I think many people see something like this and compare it to mascot costumes because of their cultural fame. I would be interested in seeing more examples of work like this if anyone has any recommendations.
Fabulous work for the day. Whoever played the pig was a master of the stage. Really impressive work to get the pig so lifelike
You know, I could be wrong or misremembering things, but don't pigs have dull teeth?

1907, the wright brothers were still figuring out flight, 2 years before the titanic began construction, no world wars yet, 20 some years before the stock market crash, people that fought in the civil war saw this, Lincoln wasn't even on the penny yet, no one had been to the north pole, no automobiles yet, I could go on but suffice to say the world as we know it did not exist yet so it's nice that things like this have been preserved and put out for the world to see, thank you for posting.

I'm actually surprised no one interpreted it as the girl humiliating the pig and the pig eating her as revenge. Hence why the final time the pig comes out It's holding It's belly, and it seems heavier than before, and why It's laughing menacingly.
This movie was inspired by a famous theatral valdeville segment and in the original show the pig was abandoned by the woman and became crazy because of that this is the actual ending meaning

I like it, the pig is cartoonish but has these realistic touches, like the hair on its head and the ears and the stitching on the skin..I like that it’s not all smoothed over like a Disney character or mascot..also the girl is such a great dancer and her costume and the “set” are so charming
And people say special effects in movies nowadays are awesome? Look at this. This is in 1907. This is more than 100 years old, and it's one of the most visually impressive movies I've ever seen. The best part is everything you see is actually right there in front of you. There's no CGI, or anything like that. It's all natural. Even though it's a little strange, I think "The Dancing Pig" is a great silent film.
CGI can be good stop with practical vs cgi debate both have there place

Literally one of the weirdest things Ive sat through. But it's interesting, it shows 114 year old animatronics. Whilst creepy, it's wonderful to see something so old.

A depicted analogy on the circle of abuse.
The monstrosity abuses the girl into a relationship with it.
Abused girl becomes abuser by humiliating the monstrosity.
The monstrosity once again abuses the girl by eating her, setting and end to what itself started.
Oh how times didn‘t change since 1907…
Damn.
The sharp teeth make it look more menacing. Also the way it rapidly rolls its eyes like it’s possessed around 3:50 right after the freaky tongue came flailing out of its jaws is what made it extra creepy. Plus at the end when they are showing all the functions it can do, it rolls its eyes back in its head, making it look dead. I mean dont get me wrong, it was indeed a very impressive costume for the time period, but that doesn’t change the more disturbing looking aspects.
Nightmares for me tonight 😵💫
You have correctly described all my thoughts on this matter. I'm shaking your hand.
Why does the pig have teeth, anyway?
That pig is a dirty old pig... Do I need to write more? (also if you've ever seen a boar then you know that face)

Nah, that pig predicted the griddy
I think there's two people inside that costume! most likely one standing normally and the other is hanging on his back controlling the eyes and ears etc.
just one, it changes his arm position to the pigs head when controling facial expressions
For a costume made in 1907, it has an impressive range of motion. Mind you, everything within that suit has to be manipulated by hand. There wasn’t any of the special hydraulic or electric systems used in modern suits when this was made.
As for it looking “creepy,” that was a part of the intention of suit. After all, it’s meant to be a pig and pigs aren’t known for being “beautiful” creatures. Within the context of the film, this element is further expanded upon by showing the pig in question trying to impress a woman, but coming off as, well, a _pig_ in the process.
I agree.
"For a costume made in 1907"? Do you really think we have any better things now except in medicine and electronics?
Great costumes have been created by human beings since time immemorial.

The pig ate the woman, evidenced by it going loopy with rolling eyes and a wagging tongue before leaving the stage with her and coming back alone, shamefully rubbing a much more swollen belly (yes, pigs have and will eat humans). Kind of interesting how you missed (or overlooked) that, though.

I can't imagine the hell the person in the pig suit is going through back when suits were made with such "quality". No doubt very thick with ventilation not a concern when designing it.. only looking life like was probably the priority. Add in no air conditioners or heating invented yet and likely having to rehearse this several times in a row a day for hours straight. And hoping unlike the makeup in the wizard of oz the costume wasn't made of an unknown hazardous material in the paint like lead or absestos used in the outfit that would catch up to the performer later in life. Whoever was in that suit... I can only begin to appreciate all you went through to make this. Glad this video survived. Bravo
well there is a sizable hole in the top of the head. The pig's top hat accidentally falls to the side and reveals it a bit before it wears the female costume. Maybe the hole has another use, but it is at least a little bit of ventilation.

I love this pig 😂 firstly because it's so old it's like time traveling but also because it's done with so much handmade artistry. That alluring creepy factor of the almost human like features is irresistible to me kinda like animatronics 😍
The facial expressions on the pig costume are amazing. The moving eyes and snarling lips. This was in 1907 without our modern animatronics and remote controls. The dancer in the costume has to do it all themselves manually (hence the arms and face rarely move at the same time.) The puppeteering is as impressive as the technology.
Yeah the pig looks creepy and uncanny valley - especially with those human like eyes - but that's not a bad thing at all.

Wow this costume for those years is magnificent and the colorized video remastering with the frames up making it even more impressive! Truth be told this shows greatly how usa was a millennia ahead in cinema! This costume for its time surpasses also the supposedly more modern disney costumes when disney world first open its doors years after this!
The guy operating the pig animatronic and the costume creators would win an Academy Award if such a thing existed at that time, outstanding!
That’s a person inside a costume
Lol, there was no such thing as animatronic in 1907. There was no Internet either, just in case you didn't know.
French talent
Usually I get creeped out pretty bad by mascots and the like but I was so focused on the sad story it never crossed my mind. The close up shot at the end really showed how impressive the pig costume was. Plus I'm always moved by films from the distant past. All the people involved with this are gone now.
I feel so identified with your two last sentences. I really would like to go back then and to live at least one year in that epoch (obviously with a good economic situation, otherwise, no thanks!)
@@RiceStranger -This sounds like a Twilight Zone episode.
@@auggie803 Sorry, I don't know the series
@@RiceStranger It was a sci-fi show with completely unrelated stories each week. (late 1950s) You've no doubt seen it referred to in various TV & film.
Here's a couple examples. I used all caps to indicate the episode titles:
Guy with thick glasses just wants to have TIME ENOUGH TO READ. This gets him in trouble with his wife and his job.
On his lunch break, at the bank where he works, he goes into the open vault to read.
Nuclear holocaust happens!
He comes out from the vault, the only one alive. He's OK with found can goods and stuff, but the loneliness gets to him.
On the verge of "self deletion", he discovers the bombed out library. He stacks up all the books, joyful that he now has time enough to read.
He drops one of the books. As he bends over to pick it up, his glasses fall from his face, shattering the glass, making reading impossible.
Another one:
"Benevolent" aliens come to earth to help mankind. Their philosophy is a book translated as, "TO SERVE MAN".
Our scientists manage to translate more of the book. Turns out it's a cookbook.
@@lawr5764 Mmm, sounds as an interesting series. May see it some day. Thanks for the explanation!
This costume looks better than any CGI I’ve seen and that isn’t an exaggeration.
That pig costume was found at a warehouses/storage somewhere off of Melrose Blvd Los Angeles where Hal Roach had some items as well when the costume was removed from it’s wooden trunk it fell apart 🐷
I am stunned at the quality of this footage. 115 years old film and still an amazingly clear picture that gives us the opportunity to dive into a very distant past. It is actually overwhelming when you consider that probably not so many people saw it back in the days and we today are fortunate to watch it on RUclips. A fascinating and disturbing film at the same time.
Can't you read? It's modified.
It's been enhanced with modern AI technology. Pretty awesome actually.
they are correct, if this was seen in raw form, obviously it would be in B.W the frame rate would be way off and the footage full of cracks and slices and no sound...
@@jimmymcjimmyvich9052even still there has to be video there to modify, if its all decayed theres nothing to fix
I think this piece is about sincerity and appearances (think "putting on airs" in the same sense of putting on clothes). The object of ridicule is not the pig itself, but that he's trying to be something he's not. It's only through a succession of varying roles that he finally starts to piece it together, and realize that he doesn't need to "put on" anything at all - that life must ultimately be faced naked, and afraid
Recall Adam and Eve.
no
This is a great analysis of the piece. There's definitely some real life connection to be made here.
Wow. You missed the plot by a million miles.
حقيقة العصور. . عندما نستضعف. الشخص ونقوم بلتنمر عليه. في النهاية سيقوم ب التهامنا
Great video 😊
We have to admmit than that disguise is really impresive to that epoch, specially the faces he does, moving eyes, mouth, nose but the most creepy and sobresalient when shows and move the tong. Genius the filmaker of this film.
Impresive disguise even better than disguisses of films of future decades
I am SO glad that this was captured on camera. What an incredible piece of art and technology and craftsmanship and performance. I am blown away. 🐼💖🐷
I've never understood why people would find this disturbing, its charming. I feel bad for the pig, to be honest.
So did I! She humiliated him and I was sad for him.
@@sashaconrad3939 same here, unironically wish i was there so i could have hugged him
Same
Maybe because 5:08
The weird tongue, the teeth, it's just uncanny valley, the costume is disturbing
If this had been made in 2007 instead of 1907, by now we'd be on Dancing Pig 10: Rashers of Revenge
seeing such talented people that are no longer with us is so crazy...
