I never knew these videos on the internet existed, it’s such a different niche to what I’m used to! Either way, great video Kathy! Very calming and beautiful watching and listening to you sharing your passion ☺️
Thank you for this Kathy! It was very helpful on many levels. (I'm brand new to paint pouring and already loving it's endless beauty and possibilities.)
Kathy, I wouldn't have been able to have left it alone either! The color you used around the edges was the one I would have picked also, and if you hadn't stretched the paint, I think it might have cracked as it seemed quite thick. Your color choices were impeccable, and I have always been a huge admirer of your beautiful art! God bless you! Mari 😊❤❤❤
That's beautiful Kathy you can do many things with that design. The first thing I thought of when I saw it transforming was a peacock. Put the body in the middle and there you go! Thanks sweetie and stay blessed!
Thank you Linda! We have experimented with adding music to some - say where there is a lull - or I'm using the hair dryer. Thank you so much for input on this - I appreciate it!
KATHY, i have JUST found you on youtube. Oh, wow, i wish I'd found you earlier. I love you technique. YOU are my saviour lol i can now do paint pours...I've found you so inspirational, i have subscribed for 'anything' from your youtube programmes. Bless you for sharing. Love from UK
Beautiful!! I've heard other artists say they had found those strainers at the Dollar Store. After seeing this, I'm definitely gonna try it!! Thank you!!
Thanks for this! This is a great technique, and a good initial insight into what works and what doesn't. One clarification, and a couple of suggestions for spreading the paint better: The thing that makes this work is not exactly that there are lines instead of holes, but where those lines (or holes) are. They have to be a the /edge/ of the flat bottom, so that the paint easily runs out. If you'd found a colander or sink strainer with round holes at exactly the place where the sides turn under to the flat "bottom" (as you have the strainer sitting on the canvas), that would have worked, as well. For encouraging the paint to spread farther toward the edges, there are a couple of things to try. The first only works on a somewhat resilient, "elastic" substrate, such as the stretched canvas you used in this video: Carefully lift the canvas in one hand, holding it firmly, and run a finger of the other hand along the under side, gently pressing upward, until you locate the the point from which you want the paint to spread. Press up more firmly, in that location. Use care. You don't want to stretch the canvas too much, or you can cause a depression into which the paint will puddle, once you release your finger. If this happens, you may be able to save the piece by supporting the center on something that slightly raises the surface. If the spreading point is in the very center of your canvas, you can try balancing it on something like a spray-paint can, or a partly-used roll of paper towels. If you do ever distort a stretched canvas, you can often remedy the problem--after the paint has thoroughly dried--by heavily misting the back of the canvas with water, then drying under a hot hair dryer, to shrink the canvas taut again (more or less, depending on how badly it's distorted). The other way I think of to spread the paint is to use very light centrifugal force, either by suspending the canvas on sling of crossed cords and gently spinning the canvas like a turntable. Or you could use a good-quality, easy-rotating lazy susan to support the canvas, and gently spin that. The lazy susan method has the advantage that the canvas can be secured in place with double-sided tape (such as carpet tape). In addition, with care, the canvas can be secured off-center, locating the spread-point of the paint in the center of the rotation, if your pour is off-center, or if you want to experiment with various manipulations for different effects. Thanks again for this video. Your result is spectacular!
I have used the same strainer as yours and it worked out great. I found them on eBay and you get 4 strainers all different in one package. You can use all of them and each one leaves its own distinct pattern. I did like and subscribed to your channel! I'm so glad I found you! This pour turned out great only I have the same problem and I can never leave well enough alone! Keep on pouring!
I love the design you got with this!! That water bottle you showed. I am getting ready to do a bottle bottom pour with one of those bottles lol theres more "petals" than the regular soda bottles. I just recently found these strainers you used at my local dollar tree. I havent tried it with a pour yet. I wasnt sure how it would do. Thanks for sharing this technique with us! It's beautiful!
Great tip! I was looking for one just like that one today and will probably also go to amazon. I did find a neat little one at a dollar store that is different but I got a very cool and unique result. It has small round holes all around in a line but they are spiraled and I was not sure what to expect but I LOVE what turned out!
I loved the final result....the manipulation definitely added to it rather than detracting from it.....it ended up with a beautiful, feather-like pattern.
Hi, i liked your video very informative and clear sounding. I have found if you want your pour to spread alittle further on a dry canvas add a paint all around the pour touching it. The pour will not curl over itself. I do like the flower effect. Will you let it dry before adding the border color you mentioned.
If you had a flowing base coat, like the teal in the background, on the canvas first it makes it easier to spread the design once you move the colander. Also try push pins in the corners rather than tall cups works so much better. Thanks for the great video. Beautiful pattern!!!
Could you stop half way thru pour and tilt to fill in outer edges then put strainer back in center and pour rest? Do you think it would then have beautiful pattern in the center with filled in edges?
Hi Kathy so impressed with that colander pour do you think it would work on a glass lazy Susan and if so what preparation would it require thank you from Perth Western Australia 🤗🤗
Do you think that your paint pattern would have spread a little more, if you had painted the canvas with a thin layer of paint or floetrol? It may make the very outside edge a bit fuzzy, but on the whole it would spread easier with your outside colors not rolling under... Beautiful job!
Hi Patricia! This was an experiment with this technique. I have since done it several different ways and was much happier with the result! Thank you for watching!
I think a lazy susan would definitely work too. I just got a new spinner - dying to try it! It has a base on it - so maybe the paint will not get all in it to clog it up!
Actually, Mandy -- I was thinking of the wrong one! No -- I did not add the background until the end. However, the ones I have done later - it did the background first and then the sink strainer while it was still wet!
Silicon sink strainer is what I searched for when I found mine. Many people found their’s at Dollar Tree before Christmas. Mine was sold out then I noticed a couple of weeks ago they had them in stock. Not all Dollar Tree stores will have them. I got a regular colander and flipped it upside down. It doesn’t make as pretty a pattern but it was interesting.
Hi Ms. Kathy, I am very new to this craft. Only 2nd video . The other one, a lady did it with a colander. What.kind and where do I get the paint.? Any particular brand and etc. Walmart crafts section? Thanks! Was beautiful design!
Thank you so much! Yes, you can get your paints from the craft section at Walmart. They often have very good sales on them too! For your pouring medium - they may carry small bottles of Floetrol in the paint section. You can also use glue and/or water. With just water you will need to be careful not to use too much - start with 1/4 teaspoon increments until your paint is the consistency of warm honey. Have fun pouring!
the Joann's brand Craft Essentials paint is super watery. their are some colors that may not need any water added. also this brand does not have as much pigment as other brands. I also use a baby medicine dropper to add water. this may have worked better if you had put a layer od white on the canvas first. this would allow the paint to "float" on top the white so that you can stretch it out to the edge. you could try to use black or the teal .
Aliexpress.com also has these little strainers for $2, just search 'Sink Strainer'. Thank you for this great video, it's so lovely that you share your gift with the world. God bless.
Very cool! I tried it, but yours is much better, and after washing the colander, I yelled into it ... and strained my voice! =) Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. I really appreciated seeing how you, like me, can't always leave well enough alone.
Beautiful design. I need to get me a colander like this and try this. Thanks for all the info on what works better n what doesn't.
Thank you so much Tanja! Happy pouring!
I ordered the strainers from Amazon. Can’t wait to try this. Thank you so much.
Thank you Donna - have fun with it!
Just bought the same set from Amazon yesterday. Doing a pour today with the same colander.

Beautiful! Love your tilt effect.
Thank you! Cheers!
Gorgeous, love the finished product and thanks for giving us the link to the strainer.
This turned out wonderfully!! great job!!
Enjoyed watching to see what pattern appeared. Very cool will try it and see what pops up on my canvas. Thank you
Thank you Phyllis! Have fun pouring!
Thank you for this Kathy! It was very helpful on many levels. (I'm brand new to paint pouring and already loving it's endless beauty and possibilities.)
Thank you Shannon! It is so much fun -- and actually relaxing to me! Have fun!
Before using strainer, put a wet background on so paint wont stick to canvas and will flow
Kathy, I wouldn't have been able to have left it alone either! Thank you so much Mari for your kind words and for watching my videos. God bless you too!
That's beautiful Kathy you can do many things with that design. The first thing I thought of when I saw it transforming was a peacock. Put the body in the middle and there you go! Thanks sweetie and stay blessed!
Thank you so much for not adding music. So great to watch this and hear you speak.
Thank you Linda! We have experimented with adding music to some - say where there is a lull - or I'm using the hair dryer. Thank you so much for input on this - I appreciate it!
Kathy, I love this pour much more then the other pours people do. Love, Love, Love this. Thanks for this video.
Thank you John!
Have to admit I'm an artist this is one of the most impressive pours I gave seen absolutely beautiful great job.
Hi Sandra, thank you - and thanks for watching!

Beautiful!! I've heard other artists say they had found those strainers at the Dollar Store. After seeing this, I'm definitely gonna try it!! Thank you!!
My dollar store does not have them! Some probably do. You can find them at the Amazon link I have.
It's very beautiful. Loved it.
Thank you Nisha! Thank you for watching!

Why don't you write a book on it?
Thank you so much for the wealth of information. Much appreciated ❤😊
The only place I found these strainers was on eBay...I looked everywhere ! This is a beautiful result. Thank you
Im glad somebody did this! I had thought about it but had yet to try it! Subscribed, thanks!

Thank you sooo very much I have purchased 500+strainers and was unhappy with the results. Now I know why!
New Subscriber here: I liked it when you finished it the first time, but when you tipped it, I loved it. Look forward to seeing more.

Best one I have seen yet.
Hi, I had to watch this one again! I love the design!
Thank you for the link to the strainer. Been on the lookout for one. Amazon.ca also has these for $6 and that includes shipping.
I loved the final result....the manipulation definitely added to it rather than detracting from it.....it ended up with a beautiful, feather-like pattern.
I found some in our Dollar Tree which is a dollar store...they have lots of different things you can use...Good luck all! Thanks for sharing!
Great...I also got mine from AMAZON, and took one and snipped every third little black strip for a different pattern.
Very pretty. I haven't tried any of this kind of art, but you made it look easier.
Thank you Darlene -- just jump in! It is so much fun.
Great color choices, they all compliment each other really nice! Cool pattern. I see I havent been using enough paint from the look of yours.
I have not seen it before either. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
You inspire me so very much! Thank you! I love the end result!
Thank you. Great tutorial on the Colander.
Hi, i liked your video very informative and clear sounding. I have found if you want your pour to spread alittle further on a dry canvas add a paint all around the pour touching it. Thanks for showing, Kathy. I found mine at Dollar General in their Dollar Days section. Creative Blessings!
Thank you Kelly. Happy pouring!
Thank you I have tried everything now I’ll try this
Have fun
Beautiful!! Love this pattern

WOW!!!! Simply beautiful!!😍😍 Thanks for sharing this with us. New Subscriber here!😃👍🎉
Thank you for watching --- and welcome!
If you got a cake spinner/ lazy Susan, you would keep the pattern & stretch it out.
Thank you, I've got to try this, love the design!
Thank you for showing this. That is super cool!!
Thank you Jenny!
Lovely job. Such great s/ Western pattern. Thanks for sharing.
A beautiful pattern even when you turned it. A lovely video that was a joy to watch.
Could you stop half way thru pour and tilt to fill in outer edges then put strainer back in center and pour rest? Do you think it would then have beautiful pattern in the center with filled in edges?
Lots of options for this! I would definitely give it a try!
Beautiful art thanks!
Pretty.
I've seen the strainers in General Dollar.
You are so pretty. Love your tutorial!💜
Thank you! Very kind!
Excellent info!!! New sub!
Thank you Donna - and welcome!
Thank you so much for sharing this 👍... Great idea on the technique 💯
Thank you Ann!
Gorgeous!
Thank you Laura!
Amazing! Love it.
Hi Kathy so impressed with that colander pour do you think it would work on a glass lazy Susan and if so what preparation would it require thank you from Perth Western Australia 🤗🤗
Awesome I loved it
do u put down a base of white acrylic paint first ?? or do u just pour paint around it ??
I did not put a base on this one. If you do, I would put a think one or you will have a lot of paint on your canvas. Thanks so much for watching!
This is beautiful Kathy. You can buy the strainer at the .99 cent store. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Anna, i have had several people say they were able to find them at the dollar store. Also, Amazon has them. Thank you for watching!
Nice and glad you kept the pattern
Thank you!
It's really cool! Thanks!
Thanks Liz!
Loved your tips....Using a spray bottle allows you to add water sparingly...I have added too much using the pour technique...just a thought
Get a lazy susan and spin it to stretch it out with out messing it up. That is what I am going to try. What do you think?
I think a lazy susan would definitely work too. I just got a new spinner - dying to try it! It has a base on it - so maybe the paint will not get all in it to clog it up!
Sharing this in my facebook group. Thank you for posting this!
Thank you Rebecca! Thanks for watching!
Approximately how many ounces of each color did you use? It came out very beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
About 2 ounce of paint to 2 ounces of pouring medium. Thank you for watching!
Hi there, was the white paint in the background still wet when you did this pour please? Love it.
Yes, Mandy, the paint on the background was still wet. Thank you for watching!
Actually, Mandy -- I was thinking of the wrong one! No -- I did not add the background until the end. However, the ones I have done later - it did the background first and then the sink strainer while it was still wet!
@@DesignedByKathy thank you. loved the video :)
@@DesignedByKathy Thank you
Hi, lovely pour. If you started with a wet canvas, would it spread a little better?
Yes, Lis -- that is exactly right! The ones I have done later I did put the background first.
Exactly what I was going to ask if I didn't see any others who asked! So, thank you!😁
So beautiful art
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful 😍
Thank you Jude!
Very pretty and looks fun to try. What pay t do you use and what do you add to it along with the water to make it flow? A thinner?
Silicon sink strainer is what I searched for when I found mine. Many people found their’s at Dollar Tree before Christmas. Mine was sold out then I noticed a couple of weeks ago they had them in stock. Not all Dollar Tree stores will have them. I got a regular colander and flipped it upside down. The sink strainer is brilliant and easy to do
Wow love it

WOW just found your channel, this turned out beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing :-) You do great work :-)
Thank you Linda! Welcome! Have fun pouring!
You could stack a few cups together and put it in the center of the canvas to elevate the middle slightly without losing the pattern
I love the final! Its beautiful! My favorite colors!!
you got a new subscriber! What an amazing idea!
Thank you Malva!!
the Joann's brand Craft Essentials paint is super watery. their are some colors that may not need any water added. also this brand does not have as much pigment as other brands.
Firstly the painting is amazing! Also wondering if you have tried putting a cup underneath the centre to get the pattern to flow to the outsides?
I love that advice too.. "If at first you don't succeed....try, try again." That quote comes from the Scottish hero, Robert the Bruce. When he was holed up in a cave, and hiding from the English he had plenty of time to think. He watched a spider rebuild his web after it had been destroyed many times. Hence the saying....... I love the previous video on card making from a napkin. Keep them coming.👍
I’d like to do this on a rock but not sure how. Suggestions? Loved the video.
I would definitely give that a try! Why not!
Beautiful colors. Just FYI, you can get the colanders at the Dollar Store also. That’s where I found mine.
Absolutely you can!
The dollar store by my house has a large colander with that same pattern. Like a full size Would you recommend that I buy then Or do you not think it could scale up well in size
Matt -- try both sizes. You will get a different result with each -- but each presents cool results!
