00:00 Art success in 2024
What do you want to do this year and what goals do you have?
Gonna get better and get more work. I'm gaining experience and slowly feeling more confident. I already make a living off art, now the goal is to be less broke hahaha.
Thanks for all the advice. Very helpful to remind me where I must keep my attention and efforts on. ♥
Sounds good, but can you be more specific? What will you do to get better and what are your plans to gain more income from your art?
I think I’ve already done that like couple years ago lol and it turns out pretty good
but still no luck of success
@aaronmckenziepowell07 what have you done again? Also don’t forget that success isn’t always seen quickly but rather is slowly developed. It’s like the analogy of the frog in boiling water. Ever heard of that?
Happy 2024! I just relaunched my comic series after a very long hiatus. So really putting my all into making it successful is my goal this year.
My big project for the coming year is to start work on the pages for my comic, which I think Im only getting there because you pushed me to.
And with all the help you've given me with my IP, I definitely would love to know about your's!
That's awesome! I would definitely be happy to share my IP concepts with you as well! How many pages are you aiming to illustrate this year?
@@TheArtMentor I am hoping to start publicly posting the pages in 2024, and I want to start with a whole chapter to post at once. I also want to have a buffer of 10 pages extra, so I think I'll need around 40 pages done
I began doing just as you said and wait 2 days before showing anyone or posting. I feel it's allowed me to slow down and become better at analyzing and making adjustments with the extra time, overall improving my art!
That’s awesome to hear! Ever have any horrific realizations where you’re like “oh my god why didn’t I see that…?”
@@TheArtMentor honestly, *all* the time. The thought never really goes away, but at least now it's more toned down now.
Composer here. I'm about finished remixing and remastering a 3 year-old track. I think #1 on your list is important.
And this remastering is in the middle of composing new tracks. It's also important to take on new projects. 🙂
Thanks for your input as a musician watching this! Did you gain any new tips or directions from this video?
Lol beating Skyrim twice is a GREAT way to put that time into perspective
Haha have you ever felt that way? I sure have with multiple games in my life after some time
I LOVE reworking old arts!
They're such a massive motivation for myself to remind myself 'Hey look, you've improved you can do this!'.
Also started making a habit of what you said, not sending out work straight away when it's finished. I noticed myself leaving mistakes in that I simply didn't notice as I finished the work, but notice straight away when I look back at it a day or 2 later. Most of the time they're not major mistakes, and no one will see it apart from me. But I've had some things slip that really shouldn't have. So while I already started doing this, it's honestly a VERY useful tip to anyone that doesn't do this yet. I notice myself improving the work so much more just by 'letting it rest' as it it were a piece of chicken haha
My personal 2024 goal, I'm going all in on learning perspective. It's a massive weak-spot for me.
Also, I'll finally have time to start getting into digital art! So I'm super excited for that.
Pixel art is my main medium, but since that became my job, I really want to branch out to where I can study and enjoy without the pressure of 'money-quality' attached to it. (and then hopefully transfer that over to pixels too of course!)
Enjoyed the video, looking forward to what the year will bring! Happy 2024!
You’re gonna have a great year, I can tell! So how are you planning to get better at perspective this year?
My loctician is palnning on having an art gallery setup by the summer of 2024, so I'm definitely aiming to get into it when it first opens, so my goal is to kick my azz into gear and actually make art for it instead of lazing about. Good start into the new year is habing that in mind.
Edit for sections:
1. Definitely going to get out my old works for my new projects and changing them up.
2. I told my SM mentor I'm soing YT, so it def helped out not following huge trends on other platforms as a performance. Advertising on TT for my YT page honestly helped just focusing on my artwork & post a few times there.
3. What im aiming to do next year is to join more art shows in the city. Even tho my works are "art show cheap", i feel like it's a better way on getting my name out there than social media. It's a scary task for an introvert, but when i get the job closest to the city, i want to do that.
4. Need to remember to do this; esp w/ my portaits.
5. I need to O4A my sculpting flowers so they look more realistic compared to the abstract-ness of the rest. Adding hands (& a bit of arm) to show more emotions to my pieces too.
6. Already got a date scheduled w/ you when things work out 😁
7. Since im getting into making my own art batts & yarn, I've been following yarn artists to see how they pick out their references to do their colors, how they spin the yarn, & how they do other things w/ said yarn. Super helpful in enhancing the yarn hair in my works. I'm also looking back at my previous inspirations since they're posting again. I'm going to use that template when i wake up in the morning.
8. I def need to participate more in these raids 😅 I'll be there in your discord to see what i can do alng w/ everyone else. I'm also in FB groups w/ other black women artists, so it will be fun to participate again.
9. I really need to embrace the abstract side of my art. I make everything too clean, so I need to understand to be looser w/ my art piece than just keeping everything need. I'll do this by looking more into abstract mixed media portraits.
10. I'm not so worried about AI art, but i would love to see more of your takes on it.
11. Going to schedule my art again 👍🏿
12. Powerful: Getting into galleries & shows. Sustainable: Get an hour of art done.
That's an awesome goal! What are some checkpoints and metrics you'll need to develop to hit those goals?
@@TheArtMentor
Just edit my comment as I was going along the vid. 😄
Haha nicely done! What’s your RUclips channel about? Did you already start it?
Great advice
Glad to hear! What did you enjoy the most in this video?
Love your videos, Shawn. They always get me in the right mindset when I lose focus!
Thanks I’m happy to hear this! What are some goals you have for this year?
@@TheArtMentor I want to complete a graphic novel. I've been working on the storyline for the past few months. Ideally I would have it published sometime next summer
@popesuavecitoxii2379 that’s an awesome goal! Can’t wait to see it! What genre does it fit into?
@@TheArtMentor it's a near future sci-fi about two characters from very different backgrounds who must look beyond their selfish ambitions and use their unique skills to make the world a better place.
sounds awesome, can't wait to see it!
Great video, Sean, as always.
I already have the pieces I want to do in January and a lot of old concepts that I was thinking of repaint.
You really helped me immensely in the last months, coming out from a place of stagnation and regaining some trust in my capacity.
That priestess you showed during your video made me still proud of myself.
And I'll try to participate in some more contests. I really wanted to do something for the angry bird theme, but I had my hands full of other projects 😅
Really, thanks for all!
Happy holidays!
It’s been a pleasure working with you this past year, and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff in 2024! What are some big goals you have this year?
@TheArtMentor I'm just planning every month, I like more to have really clear what to do in the short term. It's harder to lose the way and time, this way, for me.
I definitely want to participate in the contest more often, I want to do at least 3 illustrations every month and repaint some older concep as a warmup.
My objective is to paint, every day, at least for 4 hours (but in the past months, I was able to do it even for 8 or 12).
I'll keep doing fanart as a treat for myself, like an hour a day.
All work and no play...
And let's find some serious client, between all the scammers 🤣🤣🤣
@muffoffu those are some great goals! Definitely keep it up and I look forward to seeing what you make this year!
Let's start 2024 off by becoming *Art Necromancer Masters!* My last two years were mostly spent schooling and working, and much less on my own art than before. Can't wait to jump back into it starting next year.
My biggest goal for 2024 is to be freelancing full time doing artwork and improving my concept art portfolio!
That’s awesome! What steps are you taking to achieve that?
@@TheArtMentor well nothing solid, but it'll largely be commission based. I already have requests on several platforms, but I'll advertise myself wherever I can. Also I'll keep applying for jobs and try to land a contract gig that I can do remotely.
As for portfolio, I'll push myself to working on pieces that are as professional as I can make. Reach out to other artists, companies and potential employers for feedback.
How does that sound? Anything you can suggest, Sean?
@zinzolin14 sounds great! To help you be really specific on this, did you see my video I direct you towards at the end of this one?
@@TheArtMentorsuper late response but yes I got around to watching the video. It's very helpful as all of your videos 😊
@zinzolin14 glad to hear!
I probably just need to do all that for myself. Nothing about my stuff is ready for public viewing yet.
That’s perfectly fine too! Nobody ever said you have to show it all 😁
So what’s your project all about? I’m curious
Definitly a portfolio piece man, love how it turned out
Sounds like you got a lot of ideas from this huh? Love to hear that! So do you have a THAT project in mind this year?
Ah man i dont know, you see I really wanted to get into animation because I love imagining storyboards of my favourite songs but then I would be opening the scope too much and running away from the niche? what do you think?@@TheArtMentor
How about storyboarding that whole sequence and then making a certain percentage of the opening?
hahahah sounds like a plan here we go again XD@@TheArtMentor
@JazzyBluNekko yay! Keep it up and be sure to share it!
my big project is to finish the preproduction on THAT project. i got some nice imagery done for it. all i need too do now is start producing the comic. I'm honestly nervous :s not sure if people will like it or not.
That’s an awesome goal! How much progress do you want to make on it?
@@TheArtMentor hoping to get at least the first couple chapters done. plan is too release a page every other week in full color! with detailed rendering being reserved for cover pages and full page spreads
That's a great goal! Keep that up and share it in our community okay?
Off topic question: which platform would you recommend for art commissions?
Happy to answer! I have a whole playlist with my recommendations. Would you like a link?
@@TheArtMentoryes please. Because im expressing interest in how I can learn to earn money while enjoying my craft in drawing. Also, I’m still debating whether DeviantArt is worth my time becasue of the sexual content and the AI art stuff.

Art Mentor, I have a question. Iirc in one of your videos, you mentioned that you can ask to a client, after finishing their comm, if they have in mind commissioning another piece? I wanted to know if this is correct, I have bad memory, and in how many ways you can say this question
absolutely, and I recommend you absolutely do this! Would you like a link to that video? I give suggestions on how to do this really well
@@TheArtMentor Yeah, that would be awesome! Thanks for answering!!!
I'm here to vouch for necromancy. It's one of my favorite things to do when I'm feeling low on ideas or feeling down about my art progress. It's also how I got to make my favorite piece from this year 🩷
That’s awesome! What was the piece, and what did you want to make for your goals this upcoming year??
@@TheArtMentor its a piece called "fairy ring" and it really shows how much better I got at composing backgrounds. Plus, the new version is a lot more magical
as for my goals, they are a lot more project centered. I still want to practice compositions and color theory, but I will do that while working on drawings and animations for my own passion project that is finally taking shape :p
Sounds like you're getting there! How will you measure your success on those goals and how can you make them more specific?
