In 2010, a legends race was held at Bristol Motor Speedway. Some of NASCAR's biggest names of the past took part. But with 5 laps to go, it all went wrong. This video highlights the crash, and the lives and careers of the two men involved, Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzbach.

Such a devastating horrific crash. It is unfortunate that the event ended after 2010. I wish the event kept going
I think it could be brought back at North Wilkesboro, would be a nice addition to their lineup of events
@@JakeSimRacing I was just thinking that!
@@JakeSimRacingwon’t watch it unless Mark Martin is in it (jk)
@@JakeSimRacing OH I REMEMBER THIS AND MAN THIS GOT SCARY REALLY FAST IN A REALLY BAD WAY.
@@JakeSimRacingwhat kind of steering setup is affordable but good ps5 WOO IS WHAT I WOULD BE USING IT FOR. THX
Every decade you get older, the worse a concussion will be. I don't think anyone imagined such a t-bone to happen with these old pros.
The first time I learned about this event I was like “wow I can’t believe I never heard of this really strange event” and then almost immediately after I saw the crash and was like oh that’s why
True lol
Me too. I'm just finding this.
5:15 Fun fact: Friday Hassler subbed in for Glotzbach during this Bristol race. Hassler took the checkered flag, but Glotzbach was credited with the win.
The most fun I ever had at a race was in '02 at the Legends Rematch race at Spartanburg Fairgrounds watching Dick Brooks, Bud Moore, Cotton Owens, Roger Mandeville, David Pearson, Chuck Piazza, James Hylton and probably others I cannot remember racing flathead ford dirt cars. I'd love to see a similar event or series these days! They could race at places like the charlotte dirt track as weekend companion races to the Cup cars.
Thanks for the video!
That sounds like a hell of an event!
They could also race at North Wilkesboro
I was racing that day thats how I missed this.took me 4 years to see this
What a scary crash and i gotta give you huge credit for going into the careers of these 2 and not just the crash. What a beautiful tribute to these 2 and a wonderful video.
Thank you. These two guys are pretty much unknown to the younger fans so I wanted to give them some credit and honor them
I just love when drivers of the past get the fitting tribute they deserve. To the hardcore racing fan these drivers may not have been huge stars like the earnhardts, pettys, labontes ect but they are not forgot and they were well known stars in there days.
I remember watching this live,
thought for sure he wasn't going to make it after a hit like that
I can remember feeling the same way
The 91 legends race at Charlotte was fantastic and would probably be the replacement to use for another such race. They used mostly former cup cars, Cale Yarborough was a team owner at the time and “borrowed” one of his cars, you could see 66 Dick Trickle on the dash, Junior Johnson you could make out 22 Sterling Marlin on the dash and Richard Childress has an Earnhardt car an adaptation today I would envision gen 6 cup cars, probably a lot floating around now, and put crate engines in them to keep costs and speed down. Also use only short tracks and or infield 1/4 mile tracks like at Charlotte, Atlanta etc. Nothing bigger than Richmond. I was actually thinking earlier today about a NASCAR Senior Tour companion event. 10 races 15 ish car races Charlotte Atlanta Texas Kansas Vegas LA Martinsville Richmond Wilkesboro Nashville. 10 tracks, 10 Companion events on the actual track or the infield short track.
I think it could work, get a nice little tour going
@@JakeSimRacing These old men would still need sponsors.
These actually aren't late models, but rather former USAR Pro Cup stock cars. Under the composite bodies, it's essentially a gen 4 cup car complete with driver-side steel plating that was made mandatory long before this incident. Just a bad crash.
Interesting
I feel like if they were using more robust cars, such as gen 4 Cup Cars with smaller engines vs. the late model cars, the accident would not have been nearly as severe.
Yeah possibly
This race was a great idea for its time. The previous year in this event was very fun to watch and I loved the throwback feel that ESPN added to it before Throwback races was even a regular thing. It would be awesome to see this event come back, but I think it would be hosted at a different track like maybe North Wilkesboro Speedway that recently was resurrected. The sad part is that the drivers who were in their prime in the 60's and 70's are up in age that I dont think they would physically be able to race. So probably the field would be filled with more drivers that was in their prime in the 80's and 90's.
Yeah. It would be a nice addition to the North Wilkesboro weekend. There’d be a ton of guys from the late 90s early 2000s in a good age range that could bring people’s attention
Man I forgot about this crash.
I was watching it on TV and didn't think it would have as good of an outcome as it did.
Same here, I was scared for sure. T-boning is never good
I remember this event. I was a huge fan of the 33 and I was excited to watch Handsome Harry wheel a car again.
As far as the wreck goes, that was back in the day when information and access to drivers was like a drop in the bucket compared to nowadays. Charlie Glotzbach was a better driver, but he didn't have a famous dad or a well known racing last name so he is barely remembered.
Great video, thanks.
Absolutely spot on about Glotzbach. Thank you.
Great video! I remember watching that race with the same excitement that day with my dad!
Doing some quick match in my head though, shocked to see an open face helmet in 2010. Likely the only way some of those guys would agree to race. Lucky no one else was hurt!
Absolutely
I remember watching this live.
Same here
I remember that race when I saw Larry Pearson spin up hit the wall at turn 1 and 2 slid down the bottom and stop and he saw charlie at the bottom and rammed the car on the driver's door it was the scariest crash I have ever seen in my life
It has been 14 years since the crash
I seen a lot of crashes many crashes in racing and I will never forget of this wreck I remember it back in 2010 and it was the last legend race in bristol when this happened and officials called it and Rick Wilson won the race of Abingdon VA's
Charlie Henderson's #75 team and the cars those are ex Hooters Pro Cup Stock Cars they used these cars racing in the new series, The Grand National Super Series and Super Cup Stock Car Series
and we will never forget of the crash what happened 14 years ago
My son and I were on the other side of the track and remember the sound of that hit.
remember it well...very scary.
Sure was
Thanks for this video to quote steve waid they day we forget nascar's past is the day we don't have any future
So true!
That place is almost empty.
looks like a good crowd for a 35 lap late model race...
It was after a Busch race on Saturday to be fair
The late 60s/early 70s cars are the most badass cars in existence.
Agreed
I was there that day and as somewhat else mentioned, i'll will never forget the noise. Like a bomb going off. Glad both were relatively okay.
Agreed
i was their turn four near front strait massive masive hit
I remember watching that race when that happened. Very scary. I honestly don’t remember who won that race
Rick Wilson won after they called the race
I was at that race and the wreck happened directly in front us and you could see the wreck was coming and it was like slow motion until the impact. It sounded like a bomb went off. I honestly thought I had just witnessed a tragedy.
I bet
I was there...been looking for footage of this for a long time.
I’m sure it was crazy to witness live
Glotzbach passed in 2021. Imagine having this moment roll through your head over and over again the last 11 years of your elderly life. Ugh, that's tough. RIP Charlie
Indeed.
Man, I remember watching this live when I was just getting into NASCAR (I live in the U.K). Just horrifying.
It really was
@@JakeSimRacing and of course at the time I didn't really know who these people were as well, why they were important to the sport. Nowadays I'm a bit more clued up...
Charlie Glotzbach didn’t even try to slow down lol
He was put in a tough spot
They also ran laps in a sprint car trying to brake a record.
I do remember that too
@@JakeSimRacing right after the busch series race
I was there and we were seated on the entrance of turn 1. We saw the wreck happen but were too far away to really get a view of what was going on. I was really happy that it wasn't worse than what it was.
I’m sure it got quiet in there right away
I was at this race, and I still remember they had all of the Irwin Tools stuff set up outside of the track. Went with my dad, and we honestly both thought somebody was killed when he came around and slammed into the other driver.
I thought the same when I saw it live. Very scary especially with the older guys out there
I moved to the south almost 20 years ago and it still gets me when someone says “eem” instead of “him”. Or “ole” in stead of “oil”, you’d think by now I’d be used to southern dialect. Youns gotta know what I’m talkin bowt. M’uncles been trying the learn me.
I remember Larry and Charlie from back in the 80's. Larry being the son of a legend and Charlie had been around since the 70's.
Yep. They both had long successful careers.
Unfortunately I was sitting 40 rows above this and that sound still haunts me to his day
I bet it made a crazy sound
I remember the sound that it made at the track it was like a bomb went off. I was sitting over in turn 1 and it really LOUD
I’m sure it got incredibly quiet after it though. Always cool to hear from people who were there
As someone who also was born in the 90s, the other thing apart from this crash that I will always associate with Charlie Glotzbach was a lap record of his from the 60s that stood all the way until at least 2012. I think Denny Hamlin took the record the very next year with the lighter and higher-downforce new Gen 6 car. Glotzbach is credited with the Bristol lap record in NASCAR The Game: Inside Line, at least the Wii port I had. Although they did spell his name wrong, calling him "Goltzbach."
Interesting
I never heard about this race and crash. That was a insane hit😢
It really was
I was there that day and saw the wreck happen. I was sitting on the opposite side and the crash sounded like a bomb had gone off. Everything became eerily silent after that wreck. I never heard a race track so quiet.
I’m sure it was scary
@@JakeSimRacing Yeah it was. I thought for sure the crash was fatal.
Would’ve preferred the gray effect wasn’t there or at least for as long as it was there still good video
I’d prefer to show clips normally, but the copyright stuff has been going nuts lately
I remember watching that live 😬
Same
I watched that live. I thought he was dead. I still flinch every time I see this
It’s not a good collision for sure
They did this a year prior and everybody complained that the cars were too slow and needed more power. Then this year they did that and then this happened
One of the most horrifying crashes I have ever seen it’s on the level of Eric McClure’s Crash at Talledega
Both were incredibly scary
You know a crash is bad when everyone seems afraid to approach it, fearing what they may see.
Yeah they knew right away
Step aside... and... think good thoughts...
Yep
No spotters either.
Not really a good idea if we’re being honest lol
@@JakeSimRacing nope. I remember when all that happened. NASCAR was scrutinized for not having them on the roof.
a race that should never restarted at all
True
It’s a shame SRX has shut down
True. We’ll see what Evernham does with the IROC name soon
How ironic he suffered his worst crash many years after his retirement, driving a modern Nascar car in a short circuit.
Yeah, it’s unfortunate, it was gonna be all for fun
I was there, and have the vids of this.
Did you go for the Nationwide race earlier that day?
😱😱😱😱
So true
What, no spotters??
I was there for that .. that was awful I thought he died I think they put a tarp on his car
I woulda thought the same thing if I saw that
Larry pearson was damn lucky. Just ask Bobby Allison
I love late models. I would rather watch late models than watch cup cars
Late models are great
Explains why they do this. I always thought this would be a good idea.
Yeah, I think a legends race could still work. They don’t have to be very old though
@@JakeSimRacing I always thought like Martinsville and have guys like Darrell Watrrip, Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett etc drove a race.
Why is there no color?
Trying to tip-toe around the copyright stuff that has been going on lately
safety
I'm going to guess that you are a Scorpio.
Martinsville would be safer.
Exactly
Really intelligent; Larry is racing a car at about 100 miles per hour, with *no* plan on how he and his family are going to handle the situation if he gets hurt. (He resorted to asking for donations to pay the bills.)
I guess the wives accept this possibility.
True. I guess they didn’t think something like this would happen, but man those late models were running Cup level pace
