    Hi guys!!
I have been an AMPUTEE since 2004.
In 2000 I had a paragliding accident, after which I struggled with complications of my left leg. Constant infections, and acute chronic pain, pushed me to the point where I considered amputation. Ultimately it was the right decision, which opened up a completely different life to me.
Today I am a happy amputee. In this channel I aim to share what it is that got me to this space. I hope that you find your own purpose and happiness, despite, and even because of, the struggles of becoming an amputee :-)

Hi Chris, my name is Xavier. Thank you for being here on RUclips. I'm not an amputee but my brother will soon be one. He was shot in the leg and lost all nerve function below the knee. I'm learning what I can about what life is like as an amputee to help him transition to the new ways he will deal with life now. Can you give me advice on how I can be a support to him in all that he will go through in the beginning and later on through the years?

Hi Xavier, thank you for your message, and Im really sorry to hear about what happened to your brother, and that is going through this dificult process.
The first most important thing you should know is that he is so fortunate to have you as a caring brother, your love and care will mean so much to him throughout this process. Often as amputees we can feel quite lost and alone in the world with our loss, so having someone like you around is a huge positive.
There are so many different ways to answer your question, but the most important underlying message is to ask him what his needs are right now. It sounds like you have a good connection, therefor I imagine that he will give you an honest answer, and direct you in the best possible way to support him.
In addition you can do some research into what the process he will experience looks like. There is a book obtainable from Ossur called "Living Well with Limb Loss" which is definitely worth reading. If you need some help finding one I can help you with this.
Bear in mind that there are similarities in amputee experience with limb loss , but also that each person is different and will have their unique needs.
For me personally the most important realisation was that I needed to know where in my life (a goal) I was going as an amputee, what I wanted and how to regain my confidence and identity. This is a question your brother should contemplate, maybe something you two can talk about together.
In my next video I talk about this, it should be uploaded in the next two weeks.
Please also feel free to join me in the next live stream, and ask questions real time. I will be happy to answer them and the live comments section also has some helpful suggestions with a lot of support for our subscriber community.
All the best to you and your brother, and let's stay in touch.
Thanks for watching, and I hope we meet in the live stream event!
PS How old is your brother?

Chris, I am also a left Above Knee amputee. I understand getting a motorcycle with hand controls, but how to you maintain your balance after you stop. Can the amputee leg hold up the bike?

    • @theampedlife
      @theampedlife  Год назад

Hi Jack, good question, and something I worried about a lot in the beginning.
I've dropped the bike twice in 9 years due to the leg folding on me, in both situations it was on a dirt road in a very compromising situation. Otherwise, no issues, and never on a paved road.
The knee we use makes a difference. I've used a non-hydronic mechanical knee, so a little more risky, but very much possible - I used one for four years before going to my Ossur Rheo Knee XC, never has never let me down.
I have a biker friend who is a double amputee, he does fine with two Rheo knees.
Lastly, I always try to lean to the right onto the sound side, or both. Never left knee only, my amputated side.
Hope this helps! Thanks for checking in.

Hi Taras, thanks so much for the positive feedback and support. It all helps me to know what you guys want to hear more of, and how to better present it.
Yeah all the tech is quite a steep learning curve, 100s of buttons and switches to get used to, but getting there. As we go along I'll incorporate more and more visual diversity to convey interesting information.
Thanks for watching, and see you on the next live stream I hope!

I am so sorry i missed the live Chris! (Other obligations)
Thank you so much for answering the question about the fit of the prostheses! When i would ask they'd simply say they want it that way at first, so i thought they were just blowing me off. Now it makes sense! Especially because at first it was too long (the limb then shrunk a bit so i fit further into it) and i did get that toe strike!
I really need things to make sense to me. I will express that to my therapists and prosthetists going forward.
Again, thank you and sorry for missing.
Catching the rest of the replay.
    Have a beautiful day!!

I'll be talking some more in time to became better and better at walking comfortable, how to progress and which changes to consider making to prosthetics and gait.
Sorry to have missed you yesterday, but catch you on the next one.
      Have a great week!

Have you been monitoring your bone density in your residual limb? I’m a double amputee (ak,bk) and have developed severe osteoporosis in my hip on my AK side due to prolonged periods of inactivity and difficulty loading the limb and am at a high risk of hip fracture . Do you have any experience dealing with this issue? If so, what are your recommended protocols for preserving/restoring bone mineral density. I’ve found very little info on the subject for amputees. My doctor is recommending steroids and growth hormone. I’m hesitant to start the use of anabolic agents and want to see to what degree I can improve without them. I’ve managed to increase bone mineral density of my hip by 5% over the last year with my current protocol.

Hi Simon, thanks for the message, and thanks for a good question from a double amputee.
I've not gone into this, and don't know why because it's such a relevant issue to consider. I will research it and speak to a few people about this, and raise it on the live stream. Please join us next time and ask the question, perhaps someone can help us out with a similar experience.
How old are you? I've always believed in taking calcium as a bone density supplement, but that's a slow process I think. It can't hurt though, and can hopefully make a difference in the longer term.
Like you I am hesitant wrt growth hormones and in particular steroids, but I don't know enough to give an informed answer.
I hope we can find some info and answers, and share it on the stream. Thanks again for raising an awareness about this.

@@theampedlife I’m 35 years old. I do take calcium, I’ve had my nutrition and fitness pretty dialed in for the last year or so. I’ve been an amputee for roughly 5 years. It’s a very important issue that in my opinion, doesn’t get talked about enough. According to an article by the Amputee Coalition, 80-90% of Long-term prosthetic users experience a 30%+ reduction in bone mineral density in the hip of the amputated side. Currently my AK hip is 18% lower in BMD than an average male my age. Thanks for the response Chris, I will try to tune in to the next live stream.

@@simontheamputee5341 Thanks for sharing all this information Simon. I'm going to an amputee prosthetics event this weekend, will ask around and see if I can get some information on this. You've really got me interested in this issue, and I agree that's it's surprising that this is not more topical amongst amputees.
Will put the subject out there in a live stream, let's see what others have to say about it.
