The compass on top of the Monkey Island is a standard magnetic compass. It is placed in this location because it is less effected by the vessels inherent magnetic interference. It is usually viewed from the pilothouse by a periscopic arrangement. Its open aspect also allows for clear all round view in order to take visual bearings using an azimuth ring.
It used to be a standard magnetic compass was installed on all commercial vessels for many many years. and was used as primary Compas for checking the accuracy of the Steering Compas installed in the wheelhouse/pilothouse. believe or not we used to take compass error bearings each watch and enter the results in the compass log (eight times per day, every day). thus recording variation, deviation and total magnetic compass error. In the days when navigation was performed using a chronometer, sextant and magnetic compass; ie about 35 years ago before the advent of electronic nav systems.
Exactly.
When ships were made of wood and men were made of steel….
Thanks for the info 🙌⚓️
Yes
Intéressant merci
Bekebrede has designed a large number of incredibly beautiful classics.
Beautiful yacht. Looks like a person can just captain it themselves and it's still big enough to live on without feeling cramped. I like yachts like this.
Well said!
While the magnetic compass on the monkey bridge used to use a periscope, it likely now uses a transmitting compass to a digital repeating head there on the bridge. Common way to digitize those old but reliable compasses. That vessel would be more limited by it's operator than it's design if doing a transoceanic crossing. It has fin stabilizers so will be pretty comfortable in all weather. Very nice yacht. Wish my bank account were a weeee bit larger. :-)
It kind of looks like that compass has a camera above it so it can be watched from inside, but it's outside to reduce the influence of the metal cabin.
Nice . . beautiful trawler...love it
It sure is!
Regards the Compass location: Usually located here to reduce electrical and magnetic interference experienced inside the vessel. They used to have a periscope viewer but these days have a digital sender to a small screen in the wheelhouse. Does cause a few complications when the Compass swing is conducted for survey purposes.
Why would you design and build a boat for 2500 nm range if it wasn't suitable for crossing oceans?
You could accomplish "just crossing a sea" goals far more economically and with a lot more space.
I think maybe she can cross oceans.
Beautiful boat. I like the quasi-commercial exterior and the warm teak interior. Very nice coastal cruiser.
Glad you like it 🙌
wich teak ??? all artificial stuff
@@Batavier Watch the video at 4:30 "Teak flooring". Looks great! 😉
She is awesome. Not made for crossing oceans? Sure, it looks like it's possible. I see the point. Although, Inside channel from Seattle to Alaska, she would be perfect.
I think this boat could cross oceans, just my two cents.
Excellent,
Very nice boat. Thanks and subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
The compass is in the roof to not have the hull interfere with the magnetic readings is my guess. The ine that go on yachts like this that are immune to the effects are super expensive. My guess is that there is a reverse faced compass reader down at the helm. But I could be wrong
Looks like a Bruce Roberts design.
Hi, a very good looking and well laid out boat,i like the absence of a swim platform which gives a neat finish to the stern.l think the lack of fiddles on the cooker top would have to be rectified, otherwise a good boat.Roly🇬🇧.

2:18 The odd thing about the compass is that it is on a steel roof and surrounded by steel with those big steel cylinders on either side of it. It can't possibly work. Maybe it is a keepsake.
Although from the side view at 2:43 it looks like the compass could have an indicator inside the bridge above the helmsman. How can it work surrounded by steel though?
Those steel boxes, I believe, replace what are called Kelvin Spheres. These are movable blocks of iron that are moved side to side while 'swinging the compass'. They are used to take out as much deviation as possible. After swinging the compass, a deviation table would be printed, and used while plotting courses. They've used that system since iron ships were first built.
@@patmonks3459 I do compass swings on aircraft and after looking it up I believe you are correct. I guess the wet compass on an aircraft must have the compensators inside the mechanism so we just don't see them. Thanks !
I don't really see how they work though. A magnetic compass will simply turn towards a magnet.......so any magnetic metal would become "North." Obviously it works though. I just don't understand it.
Great channel and reviews, one suggestion maybe, give metric specs in feet as well. always seem to be looking up conversion table.
Thanks, will do!
Could that mast actually handle a useful sail?
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
🙌
👍👍👍
The original owner must be an old timer .... having a secondary compass as far away possible from magnetic influences to check that the Pilot House compass is working properly. I bet he knows how to use a sextant too.
💯% 🙌
Hi, it's so beautiful. Is it available for sale?
Do u think u would be able to travel the world with a boat like this
Yes!
The cabin top compass is unique. This is the second one I have seen and the first was on a US Naval warship. A compass points north. Magnetic north that is. Steel effects the way a compass performs, rendering a false reading. Over the last 150 years or so seamen have become use to these false readings. While in fact a compass on a steel ship is off pointing to magnetic north by 32.4 degrees to the west. This error has been built into our marine charts, GPS and autopilots.
The compass on the cabin top does not depend on magnetic fields, instead this compass detects particals of element 115 in our atmosphere. Element 115 aligns along the gravitational lines of the planet. A gravitron compass is accurate to .00023 of alignment. To navigate with a gravitron compass simply relocate your chart 49.10 degrees to your right, then the latatude and longitude lines will perfectly match the gravitational lines of the planet.
I hope this helps you.
Be happy, be safe
wow - thats some technical info 🫡 Impressive 🙌 Thanks for sharing
Huh....I thought it was a direct-reflecting compass with the bosun's balls mounted above the cabin where there is slightly less magnetic interference. The reflecting part comes from how the compass is read below in the pilot house, with the slight oddity that the skipper has to look up at the ceiling to read the compass.
A roof mounted compass is out there so you can read it from below why else would you cover it with a skylight this way the sunlight or moonlight shines through so you can read the direction.
Does anyone know, do boats file the equivalent of a flight plan? I mean....if you were going across the Ocean or any long distance voyage, is there a flight plan on file somewhere? How would anyone know if you were overdue at your destination?
She is back for sale at De Valk Yacht Brokers.
Maybe another video opportunity 🙌🫡
How about an instructional type video showing why this terrific boat is NOT suitable for crossing a sea?!
Hey, she surely is capable, but the fuel capacity would define the limits as far as range is concerned.
It would be nice to fit this vessel as a main mast & fit her with main mast and small missen mast post as well. What do you think ? Tks for vid.
She's beautiful if I only had the cash 👍
What features is the boat missing to say that it can not cross oceans? To my untrained eye, it looks like it could cross oceans. Can an expert please explain why and what she would need to cross an ocean?
also curious about this. im sure she COULD, but yeah, any experts with a true answer please?
What's the price?
Price please.
Yes, but get rid of the mast and install some heating/cooling. Maybe heatpump? Or some oil heating and some AC...
Heating was mentioned, and the mast is collapsible.
Why not bitch about the “black hull workboat” ?
@@davep5788 I am sorry that I missed about the heating and stand proudly corrected 🤭. What becomes to masts like this one I don't understand why they are ever installed? Even if it is collapsed it is still there... Can you explain the purpose of the mast? I doubt that it is for sailing and it just doesn't look suitable to lift any bigger load/boat/dingy (that is my opinion)? Would be nice to "get the point" and learn new things as we don't have those masts here except than on imports...
@@johanneslaxell6641 I suspect the mast and boom are strong enough to hoist and launch the dinghy, and it enables the masthead lights to be at a good height. It may also be possible to set a steadying sail.
@@David-qs5ii I find the geometry "interesting" for lifting from the side same as the use of a sail, but stand corrected. Be well 😋.
Wow, bang tidy! How much is it??
Not sure - this one isn’t for sale at the mo
@@YachtBuoy I was only wondering on the off chance I could afford to buy one, one day!
@@darylpike8547 23 year old sixty foot yacht with these accommodations would probably sell for around a million dollars. Considering it doesn’t have fin stabilization or water maker possibly around $800,000.
@@anthonybasiliere9366 Great I'm very interested. Please keep in touch. Where is she currently moared to please?
@@darylpike8547 She has been sold in 2020. Great ship.
I like it ok but I didn't see any sign of air conditioning.
Na.. should have had dual pitch controllable propellers wit dual engines and the appropriate halyards at the rear, more open deck space an dual cranes for the trawling net.. (and a big freezer) .. taking a boat away from it's intended design is always a 'crime'. The day of a pure luxury boat is quickly dwindling. Dual purpose should always be thought of.. as this design suits well for a tug and fisher.
