As a US citizen who has witness years of Grammy Awards all I have to say is thank you. So many artist the world over would only hope to be nominated. People don't understand that so many artist aren't even invited as attendants to the Grammy's, to be presenters at the Grammy's and very few can perform at the Grammy's. BTS has accomplished what many could not. Thank you again. Army loves BTS

He put the whole situation into perspective. End of the day BTS made history by being Nominated AND by performing their song on the grammy stage. The win will come next time, that I'm sure of.

thanks for translating 💖 this is definitely very beautifully said and made me realize how immensely proud I am of BTS. I think the devastation from the way they were treated clouded my mind and made me put aside that feeling of pride and joy. I am incredibly happy for them and the fact that it is all possible solely because of their amazing work ethic makes it even better. this is a grand achievement and they deserve all the credit for it. 💜💜💜

So easy to forget the bigger picture when we are angry at the Grammy voters who didn't appreciate BTS's talents and love for musicin 2021 after a year of pandemic and what BTS gave us and the world. Yes, forevermore now Grammy-Nominated BTS 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you for the translation and thank you for appreciating BTS💜🎶💜

Dear KYD, you are so right to emphasise this point. True artists and critics understand that it is a significant marker of achievement to be included in a very select group of talented nominees, just as world class athletes understand that to represent your country at the Olympics is a HUGE achievement in itself not to mention being a medalist! The years of focused training, the discipline and sacrifices, the self record breaking and target setting, all need to be appreciated for their own sake. Not only is it cruel, but also IGNORANT to celebrate only gold medals and Grammy winners. We should pause and think, what kind of society applauds only ONE winner, and by implication makes losers of so many deserving talented and hard working artists/athletes. Thank you for pointing that out again on Korean media and reminding all about the larger context. The word “failure” often rolls of the tongue of armchair critics who have not themselves achieved much, nor indeed understand how artists and athletes strive for quality STANDARDS. It is, as you said, NOT a POPULARITY POLL. Musical artists such as RM and Suga know this: their standards are internalised. They’re also realistic about the western and global industry. I am curious to see what direction and approach they take after this. They need cheerleading voices like yours, because your informed view helps to put things in perspective, and communicates meaningful APPRECIATION.

Another very careful, detailed, thoughtful explanation by Kim Yongdae. It saddens me that because he is speaking the truth and is going against mainstream, he is seen as a BTS defender and it puts pressure on his career and credibility as a music critic. He is absolutely right in everything he said, and I loved the marathon example he gave. In my country it was news that some of our nationals were 'involved' in projects nominated: they themselves were not nominated, but just being part of the project was so special. These haters don't have a clue of what they are saying.

Thank you for explaining it eloquently to people who do not understand and are seeing it from a different angle. I share your thoughts.
The impact they have made in people's lives through their music is far greater than any awards but as artists, of course they want that recognition.

I'm very glad that you talk about this subject. Of course, I was a little disappointed that BTS didn't win the Grammy but as you say. They have still accomplished something great by being nominated and got to perform in the show. That, no one can ever take from them. This is not a failure, this is only one of their accomplishments.

  • @SparklingKpopParty
    @SparklingKpopParty 3 года назад +17

BTS not winning was disappointing but Grammys using BTS to promote the Grammys even though they knew they wouldn't win the award was what made me angry.
Them being nominated is a great achievement in itself since that means they reached even those who are usually close minded.
As always, tnx for the translation

Thanks for translating! I love how Kim Youngdae explained it. In my country, local media reported/headlined it as "BTS failed to win a Grammy", which made me so mad. It could have been worded better. They didn't hyped up/appreciated reports of the boys being nominated but instead, hughlighted it as a failure. Their nomination is already an achievement. It's how I felt when I was nominated as the best employee of the year (thought I did not win). Being nominated means you're already a potential winner. I didn't lose something. Same with BTS. They gained more with that nomination.

they don't appreciate BTS's success because they always see them as a competition with their faves. The don't value nationalism/patriotism because of their own idols.. i hope that they see BTS's achievement is also for their country... SKorea was placed in the map more visibly because of them.

If we want to use the analogy of sports, I'm reminded of a diving athlete from my country.
She started at the junior level, moving up to compete at the senior level, then competing at the national level.
As she became better n better n winning more n more, her level of competition became higher n harder.
From a national level, to a South East Asian level, to an Asian level, to a Commonwealth level, to a World level, n finally to the Olympics.
To get to the Olympics level, she had to compete with the best competitors in each level, which may number amongst hundreds because at each level, there are also preliminaries, quarter finals, semi finals n the finals.
To go through all these rounds, repeated at each level, n meeting better n better athletes, it's not something minor. It's very hard, taking monumental efforts, grits, talents, wills n supports.
And she reached the Olympics, n in the Olympics, only the titans faced each other in battles. She faced the titans, while she was also a titan that others faced, fighting through the preliminaries, the quarter finals, the semi finals n finally the finals.
Reaching the Olympics, even if not reaching the finals, is an accomplishments, becoz she had to face so many opponents, in so many levels, in so many games, to reach the pinnacle of sports event.
She won bronze in the finals n it was a joyous n momentous event in my country sporting history. Nobody in my country had even reached a preliminary Olympic level before, n she reached the finals, she had became a titan amongst titans. Her bronze was not a failure, but an achievement for being one of the top 3 best athletes in the world. A young girl from a developing country, succeeding to pass through each levels of contending against the very best of junior athletes, thrn senior athletes, then national athletes, then SEA athletes, then Asia athletes, then Commonwealth athletes, then World athletes, n the highest level of athletic endeavours, the Olympics.
And even if she hadn't won any medal, it doesn't take away the fact that she had broke through 7 successive levels that keep getting higher n harder each time, n that she had successfully reached the level of being an Olympic athlete.
An Olympic gold medallist may be the highest honour in an Olympic event itself, but in the normal scheme of sporting achievements, being hailed as an Olympic athlete, an athlete that rightfully earn their place as being in the best athletes group, this is an accomplishment that only a few can proudly say. Saying that one has competed in an Olympics is a career high that many couldn't even dream of.
BTS being nominated in the Grammy is a momentous event. To be of such high visibility, that BTS has managed to be picked amongst the thousands of submissions, to be deliberated in the ascending level of committees, n to be recognised as a deserving nominee, the only Asian nominees, amongst the many white n POC most recognised artists in the world, to hv such impact that the many old fogeys stuck in the middle ages Grammy members would even know their name, is something that should be celebrated, to be proud of, to be written as an important part of SK history.
To be Grammy nominated, it means know BTS name was recognised by all 2000+ members of the Grammt, frm the lowest selection committees, to the deliberation committees, to the highest nomination voting committee, from all the music industry players, movers, shakers, they saw BTS name, n each of them decided, yes, it's BTS, they are good enough to go to the next level, n in each higher n harder level, the industry people hv acknowledged that BTS is good enough to go to the next level. To hv 2000+ voting for BTS to be nominated, to hv 2000+ agreeing that yes, BTS deserved to be amongst the best that can be nominated, that's an Olympics level achievement by itself.
Also, Grammy is a racist institution, as much as possible, othering Latin American artists to even a separate Grammy event, othering BIPOC artists to separate categories of urban or hiphop, othering non-American/English speaking artists to niche categories of world music or folk or traditional or just straight out foreign categories, for BTS to hv such an impact, to hv such numbers, to hv such visibility, to hv such high name recognitions, that even a racist Grammy couldn't other them to niche awards/categories, is a BIG BIG BIG thing. A group that fulfilled all the racist checklist of the Grammy, ie a POC artist, who is even a non-American POC artist, who is a non-English speaking artist, who sings in non-English language, who is not based in any western countries, who doesn't fit the western standard of masculinity, who is supposed to be just a boy band, which by Grammy racist standard is enough to other them in niche categories, n yet still deciding to nominate them in a pop category which are often filled w solo/collab artists who are English speaking, who are based in western countries, who are not BIPOC, who fit the western standard of white features, means that BTS is big enough to transcend the racist checklist. This is BIG BIG BIG.

Thank you so much ARMY Salon for translating his wise words and I stand by his logic, the past 3 days people has shown just how vile they can be just because they have a hate boner for BTS; mocking them for their LOSS, when there are numerous artists that was even nominated MANY times and yet never won in their entire career, and that's 100% ACCEPTABLE, but when it comes to BTS, EVERYONE literally jumped out for the chance to DEVOUR them like a pack of wild dogs waiting for the slightest sign of WEAKNESS from them, and that's definitely something that I can never accept than them losing

The Grammys used to be prestigious. But, it is still the highest achievement for anyone in the recording industry. I am very happy for BTS because they want it. They were happy for their performance. The producers definitely used ARMY. I want them to win a nomination for a song they have written and performed in Korean. This will be the biggest win. The academy is xenophobic....so I fear BTS might never win. They are winners in our hearts and mind. I don't understand how they are not treasured in their own country. When Dispatch said they were losers, this made me furious and sad for BTS. They deserve the world. They give us their hearts. They have given up their young lives for their careers. Yes, they are winners, Grammy NOMINATED BTS!!!!!

BTS did not FAIL. If they failed, it means THEY did something wrong or made a mistake. The decision was made by a group of people. If ARMI could have voted, it would be a landslide win!!!! Since we can’t vote, we need to keep BTS in the limelight via TV, magazine articles and radio. ARMI has done a great job so far.....ARMI keep going!!!!!

I was wondering about this too. Like, everyone knows Olympic, Grammy, Oscar, are not easy to conquer. But not many people remembered whose the 2nd winner, the 3rd winner, is that why not getting gold medal is considered 'fail'? Or is it the 'straight A' Asian Mentality? Or maybe because now there are many music awards so younger people forgot which is the oldest, or the most prestige? How much frustration we have. The one thing make me come back on the ground is Jin's quote which is 'only you knows your own determination and hard work'.

He made a point instead of looking at the negative side we should focus on positive side BTS did a great job in their first try and it's not the end they will get 100 more chances and they will accomplish it. And the history says BTS never got success in their first try. They always try multiple times to get what they want. So rather than calling it a failure i would call it a process to get success

Wow. Grammy nomination is very hard and for a Non English Group is more Harder to achieve to be nominated. Plus, BTS GROUP had Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber, Gaga And Ariana, Biggest Artist in the World which was BTS Category. In Korea they may not know these American Artist. BTS is considered to be in that Catergory alone is Huge. Justin Beiner even said, BTS should of won. Forbes magazine alluded they should of won. Korea does not know the American Forces and BTS has gain much Recognition. Korea wants Korean musicians to enter the US market then you need to know American forces.

Eminem said years ago that the Recording Academy does not reward the best, and he is not interested in a rigged game anymore. More young artists now realise how right he has been all that time.
eminem was right. The grammy only use popular artists to commercialize the grammy and then give the awards to their favorite and not looking at the facts
