This poem encourages children to think about the impact of other countries and cultures on their everyday lives, and consider their opinions on globalisation.
Hollie McNish is a spoken word poet based between Cambridge and London. She wrote a series of poems in 2013 for The Economist Educational Foundation to help young people think critically about issues in the news.

mass immigration has no negative effect guys, it's the same as migrating birds or foreign goods. It's not like we have a welfare state, it's not like we have culture and tradition, it's not like they have separate culture and ideology, it's not like it diminishes social trust and cohesion, it's not like this could drive down wages of low skilled work. I may not necessarily see all these counterarguments as valid, but never equate free trade of produce with free movement of labour, there's too many variables with people, people demand rights, livestock, playstations and minerals don't
+23Stork And free movement of products doesn't effect local business? Or culture? Banana's weren't really popular in Britain till the nineteenth century and now they're a fundamental part of our diet. And yet people still eat apples and strawberries. People still cook food traditional to the UK like yorkshire puddings even though you can get a Naan bread just as easy. We are living in a globalised world and yes that makes welfare slightly more complicated. But times change and so does social policy to fit with it.
+23Stork Immigration doesn't destroy culture just merely changes it, those who still want to will still stick with their culture but now you can try different cultures on your doorstep. Carnivals like Nottinghill are now available to thousands who wouldn't necessarily travel to the west indies. But I still do the pace egg festival (an old pagan tradition) every year. Any negative effects of free movement of goods are for the most part easily reversible though. Bananas can't vote Bananas don't reproduce*. Bananas don't get human rights. Protectionism vs free trade of goods is always hotly debated in industry already though, but free movement for people it's agreed among the 3 main parties that we need 100,000s of people coming, but is this in line with the public view? You tell me, just google some polls.
You say social policy will change in the future with mass immigration, in what way do you see that happening? What direction are we moving towards with this influx? Smaller gov? More personal freedom? Less welfarism? OFC not!
As for culture , 1 I wouldn't hold the Nottinghill carnival as a shining example of Caribbean culture and 2 culture is far more than just customs, it's not like I was lamenting not being able to do that egg thing you talk about. It's a whole way of life, and when you get a load of people with completely different cultural backgrounds together they start to lose their collective identity.

+23Stork well our government will need to do stuff like building social housing (which is required anyway), and the NHS may need to tackle new issues but on the whole the welfare provided is the same regardless of if it's a British person or an immigrant. Some of those immigrants will pay tax funding our welfare system and others may need some help to get on their feet before they can contribute but the more contributions we have the more jobs we create, the more services we can provide. As I said fundamental change to the welfare state is necessary regardless of immigration but it's something that can incorporate the new immigration issues that globalisation will inevitably bring.
+23Stork And as for the public view, I personally am very happy to allow much larger amounts of immigration. I am a member of the public, I think considering so much of the "public view" is manipulated and controlled by mainstream media it's really a moot point in a debate

It's a little more complicated that how you've portrayed it here... I mean, I think most people are fine eating foreign food because there's been an exchange...cash for product. But mass immigration to one location has a negative effect on any country, not just the UK. Cultural differences (especially religion), overpopulation, ect. Countries like Bangladesh are in such a poor state because of many, many factors - one of them being their insane population rate. Lack of control in that country leads to overspillage into other countries, such as the UK. This creates animosity within the UK because they're here not because they want to be, but because it's easier for them. It's exactly the same as what you describe with Britons buying up cheap property abroad - they don't care about the culture, only the hot beaches and low prices. Neither party is to blame, really. If the UK was collapsing and Poland was an open free house, many would flee there for better living conditions. But I wouldn't blame that country for being upset that all of a sudden a wave of immigrants is on their doorstep, for no other reason than to escape their own broken homelands.... It's a very complicated issue....

treat foreign money or products or food,
But turn them away if the foreign people who make them want to come too.
Chinese carry out bags and Indian too,
kebabs and pizzerias and foreign tropical fruit juice.
We’re ok with eating foreign sugar cane sugary treats,
Munching on foreign cocoa bean chocolaty sweets,
Complaining between every bite about the foreign folk down our street.
We’re ok with wearing foreign clothes,
Stuff we love to buy cheap because foreign wages are so low,
Our whole household comes from Shanghai and Tokyo and I know,
that we’re ok with driving foreign cars, so fast,
foreign heating gas extracted by digging up their plants,
watching foreign TVs as we sit on our starts complaining to each other about the foreigners in
our kid’s class.
We’re ok with going on holiday to a foreign beach,
lying in foreign sunshine,
swimming in foreign seas,
sipping sangrias and Cuban cocktails much as we please.
We’re ok with using foreign places to get away from UK rainy days,
watching programmes on TV showing British families as brave,
buying cheaper foreign properties and showing what they save,
we’re buying up entire Polish villages for English resorts and greasy spoon beach breaks,
complaining in Spain there’s no ketchup with the chips and covering Ibiza’s shores with booze
and teenage sick as we complain about the foreigners that come to us to work and live.
We’re ok with buying foreign goods we love to from abroad, then dumping all our rubbish on
foreign people’s shores,

people with accents we can’t understand
and how our British culture is being killed by the foreign man
and all the foreign families
While we keep eating our Ugandan chocolate treats,
Keep watching our Chinese TV, our Korean MP3, our Taiwanese DVD,
posing in our Indonesian jeans,
going on holiday in our Spanish seas,
biting down on our scones and jam and cream,
sipping at what we proudly call our English Breakfast tea, forgetting as we sip that those are
Indian leaves, made from Indian seeds, shipped across in ships that sail from Indian seas.
So please, do not tell me foreign people are a burden to our economy, I feel it’s time we sipped
a little bit of our hypocrisy and thought about how differently we treat the nationality of
Foreign money, products, goods and food to
Foreign people and their families.
