- Most of John Carpenter’s greatest films weren’t well-received when they first came out, but critics have gradually come around to them over time. They Live is one of the finest examples of this: a lot of '80s viewers didn’t know what to make of the over-the-top alien movie that was a critique of the Reagan administration, but it built up a sizable fan base over the years.
After all, how can you not love a film that features a six-minute fight scene between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David? We are here to chew bubblegum and talk about the untold truth of They Live, and we’re all out of bubblegum.

This is a great underrated classic. It works on many levels and the theme is timeless. It's scary how we're experiencing the same societal symptoms.

I'd agree it's awesome, but, hard to call it underrated when it's the subject of so much praise and review and critique, even to this day. It may not be a Hollywood blockbuster but, its name will never be forgotten.
Babbleplay I use underrated in a way that means no sequels, no love for how good Piper was especially for not being an actor lest alone an action star and how there was no happy ending which truly made it standout a true classic I’m pretty sure the remake is coming soon 😒

This movie influenced me. I was 17 when it came out. Two years later I became a radical activist and did it for 30 years. We tackled weed legalization and climate change. I never payed taxes, instead I chose to keep my income below poverty level so as not to pay for their wars and fossil fuels. True story. No regrets. I volunteered my time to causes that resist the capitalist consumption of my planet.
I highly recommend it.

They live is the current world we live in, and it's sad that millions of people have no access to those sunglasses. And the ones that have access to these sunglasses have no power to stop the madness.
The sunglasses serve as a metaphor for plainly seeing the net history of a top-down class warfare. In the movie, there is an actual invasion of aliens that are physically discernible. I remember the first time I watched this movie. The fight scene with Keith David and Roddy Piper, I said to myself damn, they've been fighting for 20?! That fight took forever, but it was the bomb diggity! Loved it!
I just watched this show because I've seen it referenced so many times. I thinking to myself during the fight scene, this has got to be one of the longest and most epic one on one fights I've seen in movie history. And you say that in this video.

My dad and I watched this movie at home when it came on HBO or Showtime back in the day.
We only watched it because we were wrestling fans, and we loved Rowdy Roddy Piper.
I had no idea that I was watching one of the most important films ever made.

@Kristopher Carmona unions aren't good for workers or bosses. Especially in film.
In Hollywood the unions essentially end up as a way to make sure that only the select few can work in movies, so without the right friends you can never get ahead.
