Spiritual death is separation from God who is Spirit. Sin leads to spiritual death. When Jesus Christ, the Son became Sin for us on the cross, His human spirit became separated from God the Father who cannot behold sin. That was why Jesus the Son cried out "my God, my God why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:45 to 46) fulfilling the old testament prophecy in Ps 22 which is a picture of the events at the crucifixion. God cannot die spiritually, but Jesus Christ the Son (the human) died both spiritually and physically. And God the Father raised the Son from the dead through God the Holy Spirit.
Our penalty of Sin that Jesus Christ took upon Himself on the cross was not just our physical death, it also included our spiritual death, the wages of Humanity's sin against God. If Jesus didn't die spiritually on the cross, then His Sacrifice would have been invalid.
