I could tell when I finished that the ending was going to be very unsatisfactory for a lot of folks. I tried to give a sense of it to someone without spoilers and the best I could do was say, remember the series finale of the Sopranos? If you’re ok with how that ending left that story, then you can probably find this ok too. 😅
I avoided reviews on this one because I wanted to read it without hearing about the plot too much so I'm late to your video. Could not agree more. This was a 10 for me until the last page. Now I don't know how to rate it because I loved everything but the ending. I feel like I will still go back to it but I literally thought my copy was missing pages at the end.
Where the Body Was is my favorite of their recent stand alone books. Even that one I think needed to be about twice as long as it was. Just when I was really getting into it, it was over.
Loved Where The Body Was but this & Night Fever were somewhat disappointing. I don’t think horror is really Brubaker’s strong suit at least not anymore. The twist of *Spoiler* being bad was so obvious. On the one hand I was surprised by the ending but on the other hand if someone said the ending was lazy it would be hard to disagree.
I used to pre-order all brubaker books but after this one and where the body was, I'm gonna stop buying them before reviews hit. It's a great duo but I'm starting to think that Ed is out of ideas

I’ve agreed with your opinion in all your reviews so far, but I was sure this time would be different and that I was surely missing something, but it seems this really was a stinker! I’m struggling to understand how this book got released, was he under pressure to get the book out? It got to a point that I was struggling, but kept thinking there’s was going to be a twist or turn I wasn’t expecting and it would turn this mediocre read into something special in the last few pages, but it never came. Here’s to hoping this isn’t the decline of my fav writer and that he can make up for it real soon! 🤞Stay safe! 👍
Completely agree with you on the ending. So disappointing and really ruined an otherwise great book. I wasn't so hot on Night Fever or Where the Body Was, so reading this and it starting out so strong got me excited that I'd finally really love a book since Reckless, but nope. I think this is the worst work they've done unfortunately. I've been tempted to do a video on it, but didn't know how to approach it without being too mean 😅

Yes it's really astonishing that they thought this was "done". This is probably why you shouldn't be your OWN EDITOR?

I liked Night Fever a lot but I am in the minority on that one. This is the first one that really let me down!

Great review, Larry. Perhaps Ed is stretching himself out too much. He’s writing these books and has his hands in a number of television projects.

If you like the story of this, you might like Department of Truth. There are some similar themes with the satanic panic stuff in that as well.
