      100%. He walks around with a weird swagger that I have to wonder if he uses in real life? Maybe it's just how he *has* to walk because of his musculature? He looks like my He-Man action figure I had in the 80s, only not nearly as manly. 🤣😂

    Point Break. Red Dawn. Road House. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (even if Swayze was in that one)..I think we have enough evidence that you can’t recapture what Patrick Swayze brought to the table. That mix of athleticism, goofiness, attractiveness, sensitivity and charm is hard to replicate. Only maybe Kurt Russell and Keanu can bring those kinds of combinations, but not all at the same time like Swayze. He was the right actor at the right time for a particular kind of movie, I don’t think we can quite recapture

      While i agree, about Swazey and his skillset, I think the advent of the internet has largely nerfed the enjoyment of "the b movie" (unintentionally wild and silly, but dumb and charming)
      because we'd rather nitpick a movie now than just acknowledge its silly from the jump and have fun with it.

    I think there's a big problem with movies today that doesn't get talked about enough. Most movies today are made for critics first. The og Roadhouse (along with other 80s classics like Commando, Bloodsport, the Troma movies et ) was made for it's audience, criticism be damned. In fact, a lot of movies were unapologetic f' you's to movie critics. We need more of that. People with a vision to make movies for likeminded individuals instead of trying to satisfy the legion of online movie "experts". (Dan is a dope reviewer so I don't include him in that.)

    There's a certain cache that people often over look when it comes to certain eras of entertainment... the 80s/early 90s have that "this is ridiculous but damn im having a good time" cache when it comes to action movies.
    48 hours, lethal weapon, Rambo, Beverly hills cop... making them today would just end up coming of as generic simply because the era CALLED for the style of film. So since I had never seen the original Roadhouse, we did a double header starting with the new Road House 1st and then the OG - the new one was fun, but then watching the OG it was unbelievable how different and how superior it was. Jake is a great actor, and very charismatic, but he couldn’t come close to the charm and sexiness of Swayze, and the new Road House was completely undone by whatever cartoon Conor McGregor was in.
    And I actually disagree with Dan that the OG Road House wasn’t to be taken seriously - the villain is the poster child for Violent Greed, and the sadness Swayze felt at his best friends demise was palpable. I absolutely loved it….the OG one, that is. The new one? Eh, it was ok.

    it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it came out that some executive at Amazon, who'd never saw Roadhouse but new the basic plot, came across a generic action movie storyline about a guy hired to protect a Bar and decided to change a few names and call it a remake.
    they story is a basic ripoff of about a hundred Westerns (which they even reference in the movie), as well as about a thousand different action movies, especially the whole "Fighter who accidentally killed someone and regrets it" thing which has been used relatively recently in Hard Target 2 & Undisputed 4.
    it's an enjoyable movie, but calling it Roadhouse does nothing but get it unfavourably compared to a much better film.

    I find Doug Liman's comments interesting in view of the lack of a theatrical release. Maybe he was expecting (or was promised by) Amazon / MGM to treat the movie something similarly to the way they treated Air about a year ago, which did pretty respectably i think in the theatrical market before going to streaming after a month or two. But since Air, i don't think any Amazon / MGM movies have had a significant wide theatrical platform (apart from American Fiction, which was always positioned as their awards contender).
    So it begs the question : did Amazon / MGM rethink their overall theatrical strategy after Air, or is it just that Liman had more faith in Road House than the studio did?

    I also got to see it in a theater! And, yes, the roof was still intact at the end credits. I generally enjoyed it. I could see what they wanted to do - even if they didn't accomplish it. The one problem I had at the outset was this: in the original, Dalton is brought in because he is the best of the best bouncer. It's what he does professionally. In this one he's just a great MMA fighter. What does that have to do with being a bouncer? Sure, he can fight, but in the original Patrick Swayze says you should just be nice...until it's time to not be nice. He de-escalates fights. And this movie really, really needed Sam Elliot. But all movies need Sam Elliot.

    Just got done watching the original (finally after all these years!) and this remake and I enjoyed the original immensely, both the good and the bad aspects of it. It’s not an Oscar worthy classic but it is a fun cheesy 80’s action flick and definitely one of my personal cheesy favorites that I’ll be rewatching occasionally.
    Remake on the other hand was a remake in all the bad ways. It was the same movie for most of it but it just didn’t have any of that 80’s magic. There were small changes done with the remake and all of them were things that worked less when they were changed or those changes felt just completely pointless. We didn’t even get the awesome rock that the original had. That one had great and recognizable songs while this version got barely anything. And most of the acting was very weak. Conor McGregor was really bad but at least he was bad in a funny and goofy way, unlike everyone else (except Gyllenhaal). He was one of the best things about this remake in a so bad it’s good way. It’s just too bad that his character was so insignificant to the overall story. He could and should have just been some goon that Magnussen hired.
    Overall it’s much like Dan said, this is yet another one of those reboots that will probably be forgotten about in a few months while the original will still be remembered years from now as a cult classic like how it is remembered today. 80’s was a magical time for movies that shouldn’t have worked half as well as they ended up working because somehow they were elevated by the 80’s cheese and you just can’t recapture that today, no matter how you try.
    P.S. Great review Dan! I felt it was very accurate and fitting, just like always.

You're spot on about the music. It was one of the main characters of the original that was very low key and forgettable in the remake. That and the character development and the action gave the original a gritty but slick edge. The camera shots (panning vertically) were also a lot better in the original too.

    I thought Jake G went through the whole movie like he knew the film sucked and just wanted it to be over. Also dropping the Wade character was a huge mistake. Could have had a killer cameo there. Imagine Jean Claude Van Damme as Wade

    Being a Gen X’er, and a fan of the original movie, I watched this movie expecting the worst, But surprisingly I was mostly entertained & satisfied considering it was a modern movie, Of course the original is still much better.

    I like the way it was shot. It looks crisp and clean and I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and location. Florida is gorgeous, this film has that Wild things buzz about it. Jake was incredible as usual, when he did that crazy eye thing I had to rewind like 5 times, that was excellent and hilarious. Conner was better than OK imho, not a great actor, but he had a really good on-screen presence about him. He carried himself really well. It's fine is a great way to score this imho.

    Good film, I actually really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it a lot especially compared to how some people have been talking about it. It was funny and the action was great. I’d actually like a sequel and see the plot threads for it.

    The first hour I enjoyed, it was fun but the second part when they're at sea and crashing speedboats into each other and flying from one boat to the next and then I am sure a truck gets involved in this I just checked out completely. Getting run over by speeding cars in this movie does absolutely nothing but catapult you to a new location . Everyone was raving about how great Connor was but all he seemed to do was swagger about with a dumb smile on his face. I did enjoy his two fights with Jake though

    "The best part about the original Roadhouse is that it was a silly movie that didn't take itself seriously and that's what made it fun, the worst thing you could do when remaking a movie like this is ask us to take it seriously and that's what 2024 Roadhouse asks us to do."
    Damn Dan, if I wasn't already subscribed, this would have made me. You really get it, and you're able to say what I'm thinking better than I can sometimes. Great review. It's a shame that Jake Gyllenhaal gets so wasted in this movie.

    Never saw the original but I did really enjoy this remake. But of course I don't need every film that I watch to be the best thing I've ever seen. It was entertaining. The story is simple but effective and the fight scenes were great. Conor McGregor can't act, but let's be honest, none of us are going to say that to his face. And yes, Jake Gyllenhaal was absolutely the best part of the film.

    I’m a huge McGregor fan and overall I enjoyed the movie but I found myself cringing from time to time. observing everything from His tone to mannarisms left me feeling like the screen writers did him no favors. The cheeky one liners just didn’t do it for me.
    The fight scenes on the other hand were extremely impressive so with that added into it I would have to give McGregor a 7 out of 10 for his debut. and if I’m giving the movie a grade, I would have to say B+. Overall

    Apparently this reviewer didn't notice the restaurant beside the book store was called Double Deuce. Also the punch to the throat killing the guy in the pool was a clear reference to the throat rip out in the original.

    • @DanMurrellMovies
      @DanMurrellMovies  2 месяца назад +1

      This reviewer did notice that they briefly put the name on a closed-down shop in a strip mall. I still don't see how The Road House is better than the Double Deuce for the main setting. As for the throat punch, eh, I guess maybe. But at that point, why not just rip out the guy's throat?

    • @TonyMountjoy
      @TonyMountjoy 2 месяца назад

      If I were to guess they didn't do the throat rip because it would diminish the climax's elevated violence during the final fight stabbing Knox. Just like the original, there was "standard" force throughout the whole movie and then at the end one major, over the top, violent act by the reluctant hero.
