Black, mental health therapist, rock girlie here! I keep revisiting this incredible Tiny Desk by Doechii. I appreciate your breakdown more than I can express. Thank you for this!🩶
at 8:20 im so glad you mentioned the bassist! Not only does she play brilliantly, but if you watch her expressions especially during the story in Denial is a River, she has this air about her like she's heard the story before but is still hyping Doechii up on this recounting so the audience/rest of the band gets the full effect. The ENTIRE band is locked in on the theatre of this performance!
I totally agree! I checked out the band's credits on NPR. The Bass player's name is Zuri Appleby and she has a TEDTalk about being a bass player and a former military member. Definitely worth checking out!
I had no idea she was all those things before, but after watching the video it is so clear! And it’s funny because I didn’t catch it the first time, but she declares it in the song! “It’s everything!” I think the next vid I’m going to do will be her performance on Colbert

@@POSSIBLYDYL OMG I recommended both of their performances in another comment! Definitely gonna 2nd this, both of those performances are fantastic. I’ve been in ACA for a little over a year now, and I’ve recently started exploring other 12-step programs that can help me navigate/heal other areas of my life. I’m also a very creative person who has put off my self-expression for the past 6 years or so out of fear/survival mode (except dancing, I love to dance and it keeps me sane. First time watching a video of yours! I think it's kickass that you're an artist and behavioral therapist that uses artistic expression to help people, I immediately subscribed because of just that alone. I have so much fun watching Tiny Desks, but Doechii's hits different. I would say my repeat Tiny Desk performances are from Doechii, Chappell Roan, RAYE, Remi Wolf, Sam Smith, Tinashe, Flo Milli, BLK ODYSSY, Jhene Aiko, Kehlani, and LaRussell. If you wanted to react to other Tiny Desks, I would recommend RAYE's, Remi's, Jhene's and LaRussell's first. Those four perform songs about heavy topics like depression, substance abuse & recovery, domestic violence, systemic racism, quid pro quo and so much more. LaRussell is actually from Vallejo (V-Town for the locals), where I've lived before and lived around too. He's a really cool artist - he's active in the local community and he literally built a small venue for himself & other local artists to have somewhere to perform at in town.
you should listen to halseys new album if you havent. i know thats a pretty different sound and vibe to this but her album is called the great impersonator and its fucking heart wrenching (she wrote a lot of it when she was battling cancer and thought she was going to die and this would be the last album she released) and she did each song inspired by a different artist (mostly all female artists) that shes been influenced by its one of the most incredible pieces of art in music put out in decades imo
