Half of the population of Chelmsford was born in St. John's Hospital according to the this is Essex website . It closed on 19 November 2010 - making my visit to the place of my birth just in time!
The hospital was originally opened in 1877 - previously it had been the work house. Around 100,000 babies were born there - including me!
I had planned on going there for years - many years. Had I waited any longer then it would not have been there!

My channel on you tube : / alanheath is one of the most prolific from Poland. I have produced around 1,800 original films.
My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- www.ceepackagin... - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
Well the building on the left with the big window upstairs is where I would sleep sometimes when on call. The three storey across the yard I think this also had on call rooms on the top floor and a great bathroom. This would be memories from the late 80’s when I was an ODA. We got a flash on call suite later on in the 90’s, great power showers.
I was there a bit earlier than you - although I don't remember it!
I was born in this hospital on 10th February 1944. I was so sad to hear that it is being demolished but obviously understand that this action is necessary for new homes to be built. Sadly I never got to see St. John's but I am pleased that Mr Alan Heath took the video. Thank you Mr Heath - otherwise I never would have had an opportunity to see the place of my birth in February 1944.
Thank you for this. My Great Grandfather died at the hospital after being there for three years in 1943.
+Pennie Ley Pennie, to see comments like yours, makes it worthwhile to make films!
All my 5 children were born there from 1994-2009 👌
So you just managed the last one before it closed!
I was born here 54 yrs ago , I found it a really spooky place
That was the first time I went back. I did not remember my first visit!
I worked in the supplies department, located close to the Gate House. I love the old building and it was always busy there. Sadly now, like so many grand buildings, it has been flattened. There are many stories to tell of this wonderful place, the odd few are of a paranormal nature :)
I think I heard about the paranormal variety from somewhere - maybe it was from the television.
Not sure it it has ever reached television, but the purchasing office was an old nursing station. One day we arrived to find all the chairs arranged in a circle, as if for a meeting. I would loved to have had the chance to investigate the hospital before it closed. It was a lovely building with some very caring staff there.
Just stumbled upon your posting, a surprise to see it. I worked here for a year in the early 70's as part of my nurse training. The maternity unit was the building on your left as you scanned round, with the wood beams on the top floor. Thanks for the memory jolt.
Thank you very much for letting me know! It was curious to see where I was born!
@teufelstaub Thank you !! But that was my 'half' birthday!
I do not know who is worse off - you or me!
My parents managed to get into the hospital before I was born - but they did not have a car so the option of me being born in the car park was not open!
@teufelstaub I was with my mother - who probably would have stopped me before the security guard!!
The maternity unit must have been quite a grand house in its day, it was the oldest building on the site. All the other buildings were added at a later date, when it became a workhouse.
It is such a shame that it was bulldozed along with the rest of the buildings, I'm surprised that it was not listed, history erased.
I thought it was a purpose built workhouse and then the maternity unit was added - although I am sure you know far more than I do. I am glad that I got the chance to see it before it went and that I managed to film it - with my mother too!
OMG I WAS BORN HERE
So was I!
It is currently being knocked down and developed into expensive houses! Waste of an amazing hospital! p.s...I was born on that car park!...
How sad! It was a very nice hospital witha a great history. No doubt it will soon be earmarked for freebie anti-social housing for the undeserving.
