Personally speaking I think this is how reaction videos should be done, to let your viewers go to the original video and see how great it is. If they hear the best version here, why go support the actual video? But man, that is such a beautiful sounding song, I hope new viewers understand how wonderful the actual version sounds

Ren almost doesn't do any one song like another. He is masterfully unique and can practically do any genre of music, can play the guitar, can play the piano, can sing, can write lyrics, can tell a story, and all in such pain and discomfort for years. He is a wonder, a marvel, and a gift to us all!! No worries on the audio. You do what you can and those of us who love reactions will keep coming back! Chinchilla's opening line "sertraline and a sip of serotonin" says exactly what it's about. Sertraline is the generic name for Zoloft, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) prescribed for depression and anxiety disorder.
Side effects can include a loss of emotion and feelings along with suppression of the lows.
Thus walking around in a chalk outline. Dead on the inside. Sometimes that trade off is... Well, maybe worth it, maybe not. "If not for long, just for a while, I bury myself with a great big smile."

This song is about taking psych medication that is prescribed by doctors. For some people it really does change their life for the better, but for others it can make them just feel like a walking zombie. Ren being misdiagnosed for years knows this feeling all too well. I myself felt like this while being on SSRI’s.

Ren sang 'So take this one, wash it down and you'll be fine" before Chinchilla came in. The whole song is about the over-dependence on prescription drugs for mental health problems. Ren described the chalk outline as similar to the chalk outlines at old crime scenes. The shape of the person is there but the real person has gone. Similarly, with some of these drugs, the person looks the same, they're the same shape but the real person has gone... They've become a 'floating chalk outline'. He doesn't condemn the drugs themselves. He recognises their usefulness and that they can be critically important for millions of people. He condemns the over prescription of them and how it's easier for doctors to hand them out, than to really look at the patient's health problems properly.
It's personal to Ren, as he was misdiagnosed with various mental health issues for almost 8 years! He was told that his physical symptoms were psychosomatic, that it was 'all in his head. In reality he was suffering from 2 chronic illnesses and a whole range of associated conditions and illnesses, which were ravaging his body and brain! At his worst, he was severely underweight, as his body wasn't holding down food, even though he'd been placed on a liquid diet. This was because he'd developed severe autoimmunity, which made him allergic to virtually all food. At the same time he was in constant, unrelenting, excruciating chronic pain. This meant he couldn't get any proper sleep. He was in so much pain and so exhausted, that he couldn't read, or watch tv, or socialise and he's said that even taking a shower every few days, was excruciatingly painful and absolutely exhausting. This went on for 7 years! Eventually a correct diagnosis and treatment improved things but he's still in constant pain.
He still has to have virtually the exact same meal, every single mealtime. He still has severe autoimmunity. He suffers from chronic depression and ptsd (and adhd). He tires really easily and still has brain fogs and days where his body just won't function. He has damage to his nerves, bone, some internal organs and to his brain.
One of the worst parts of all this, is that a proper early diagnosis could have prevented all of this. It was easier to decide he was mentally ill and prescribe him powerful psychotropic drugs. Drugs that made things 10 times worse, due to Ren's autoimmunity. Drugs that were doing nothing positive for his health. Drugs that,through years of use and combined with years of chronic pain and the absence of proper sleep led not only to severe depression and ptsd but which eventually led to a psychotic break and full-blown psychosis. Psychosis that only disappeared when the correct treatments began.

But Chinchilla is a queen. She has a strong air of female strength through and through and isn't afraid to use it!
Like Ren, she is her own best cover artist. The studio/video version of Fingers, for example is extraordinarily different than the live version. Personally, btw, Fingers live is massively superior, but I completely respect if people feel the opposite. But most would agree that the live version demonstrates her raw singing talents.
Ren is a very talented lyricist and has away of getting the grey matter going.. Haven't been so impressed by an ARTIST and a back catalog of thought provoking songs that will make you laugh and cry and touch your Heart and Soul ✌️❤️🏴.

I’m a huge Ren fan, but until I joined his Patreon and watched him rehearsing with IV’s in his arm and nurses nearby. It was eye opening to see he’s still dealing with all this. He’s better but he’s working hard to get healthy.

I've never joined Patreon, but maybe I should join Ren's. I'm going through some really scary health stuff that isn't going away, but getting worse. He's already been where I am now, the not knowing part. His music has helped me to accept whatever it is. If he can keep creating and giving, so can I. ❤ His inspiration is my best medicine.

Chalk outlines are empty within. There is an outer shell, but no life inside. People see just the outside often not knowing was in the inside. Or better: What isn't in the inside.
Being depressive myself, the emptiness is something very typical for someone with depression.
And also later lines are so typical for people with depression or other mental illnesses.

We can give you the meaning of those song, but Ren often leave the song open to interpretation as well. I watch few reaction who has suffer of toxicomany and they interpet it in a real deep way as well, so never forget that some meaning can be yours and it's ok too. Ren got couple recurent subjet that were very meaningfull for him: the illness, (and everything related to that) the spirituality (he did went on a deep journey trying to understand why he was curse with the desis) and utopia as he belive that we, as human race, can do a lot better for a better world. He is a non juging man, he got his way of seeing thing that came after many years of taught processing, reading, educating himself, and learning. He never claim that he got the ''truth'' it is HIS truth and he is always ready to be chanlange on them. He share is way of seing thing in hope that ''we'' creat a better world, including everyone. About your audio, I realy wish that what you hear is better then what we hear cuz both of them have AMAZING voice. take care.

As for the audio, we are hearing it better then what came across on this video! Our system is outdated, so we’re working with an iPhone, a decade+ old laptop! I’ve been having to piece most videos together with separate audio mp3, music video and reaction. Since I couldn’t find a mp3 download on this song, I had to use the audio from the iPhone. We’re working on upgrading hopefully soon!
You never know what to expect when starting a Ren reaction. He's an exciting roller coaster of all the emotions and genres, not just the sad ones. He's not afraid to show them all. The sad, the happy, the naughty side etc.

Don't think of this song as 2 people singing a duet together...
Rather think of it as 2 ghosts in the same corridor singing the same song at the same time. Both individuals emotionally suppressed as they hide their selves behind a wall of anti-depressants, they are both unaware of their surroundings and isolated from each other, but so intune with the shared feeling of being human beings, that they can't help but express themselves in the same way....

I take almost toxic levels (need govt approval) of antideppressants, Im sooo blunted. It does stop me murdering myself. 20 yrs now in a floating 'chalk outline' following a life long chronic illness, injuries and work related ptsd, it piles up. My current goal is to see my kids pass Uni. 2/3 so far.
Wow we feel for you our friend, while I can’t personally relate, I do have many members of my family who have depression and it sucks. I think you have goals to keep you focused and bring you joy is such an important thing! Good things can and will come out of dark places like that!

Our audio is definitely not perfect and that’s cause our setup is old and I usually have to piece a video, a separate mp3 and our reaction together. Unfortunately on this one I couldn’t find the mp3 download so just had to use the reaction video audio! Hopefully we’ll be able to upgrade in the future! Thanks for the comment!

Wow-this is my first time to your channel-I just read your bio and I don’t think there could be a better artist than Ren, to help you down the rest of your journey. I suffer with PTSD as well. Four years ago I found my 20-year old daughter deceased in her bedroom due to an accidental overdose-she has just gotten out of rehab. I’m sending thoughts your way, I hope you’re feeling better soon.

Love your content guys, but a suggestion - you need to get yourselves some good headphones, and some podcast/broadcast software (or twitch or something) to get a clean balanced sound between you both and the content you're reacting to. I guarantee you'll get way more subscribers if you do that, your content is great, but listening to the video via your computer microphone takes away from the experience. Also you're aircon is quite loud. Subscribed! 🙂

I fully recognize that this would be the case! Unfortunately our system is so outdated that it can’t handle how most reactors record their setup, everything at once. I’m having to record from my phone, import an mp3 of the some(which I couldn’t find on this song) then piece that together with a separate screen record of the music video! As former military I think you will enjoy Sabaton, power metal military historians. Also, if you wish to grow channel with a band you will enjoy a good choice, and from there Nightwish will definitely blow you up and are a great band.

Oh wow that is another major rabbit hole into the huge communities behind Sabaton, Nightwish and I would add Epica to that list. Certainly they are all channel builders if you have an ear for melodic metal. Then there are the current female rock and power metal bands such as the Warning, Lovebites, Band maid etc that will all bring their own hoard of subs to your channel. in the end though you should maybe give each one a listen but ultimately you should stay true to what YOU like.

@@VeteranCouple your understanding of the message was for me spot on , I would add that chalk outlines are or were used to show the position of a deceased body and that the drugs prescribed for mental illness can often result in dislocation and are little more than anaesthetic in there effects , masking pain rather than curing or repairing the damage trauma has caused . For me I have been on various meds for 23years fortunately only a short period on psychoactives . I also spent twenty of those years masking with alcohol and weed . I’m not doing that anymore , however I no longer know what is me and what is the medication , and when you read the side effects they are exactly the same as what the meds are supposed to be treating !!! I discovered EMDR therapy and that has helped massively with the trauma from my childhood when I was sexually abused , growing up I was the fun guy always making others feel good , until one day i mentally collapsed . I lost everything, my wife left me and friends close childhood friends slowly disappeared. My experience is by no means unique , only narcissists don’t have self doubt . I’m now slowly decreasing my dosages , but it will take upto two years to come off the meds as the side effects are horrendous. But in order to know myself fully again I am doing it . This song resonates so much , two lines stand out , Standing on my toes so I can breath . As far as our audio goes, our system is really outdated! I tried recording with the program most reactors record with and our laptop couldn’t handle it so I’ve been piecing together the reaction with separate downloaded mp3 and the video. On this one I wasn’t able to find the mp3 so I had to use the audio from the reaction itself. So we apologize for the subpar audio in that section! We are hoping to get a better setup in the near future! If you feel led to support us financially, we do have a patreon link in our description.

We apologize for the subpar experience. The way most reactors record, done with headphones is better! Our setup can’t handle it unfortunately! Praise God that just today we actually had an extremely generous supporter that wanted to bless us and ended up purchasing us a new custom computer! I hardly know what you say but just know it’ll be fixed sooner then later! It’ll be a few weeks before it arrives but we’ll keep people posted!

Also, When you get to the tale of Jenny and Screech,,,and,,,,you will....you will have to watch it repeatedly to get all of the levels. I have noticed and see if you agree,,,and I think the veteran lady will, as I am already impressed with your insights....You can not focus on everything....You have to watch it with the official lyrics to get past the Welch accent to understand the story....You have to watch it without the lyrics to SEE the visual layers...especially Screeches Tale....Jennies Tale is in a bright alley, But Screeches the light is above and behind him and descends lower into darkness, and notice when he's asking where screech has gone almost crying to the light above. Or am I delusional? Maybe? Look at it with your artistic EYES veteran lady. Then ponder the depth of Ren. Oh and these are all one takes. Good Night. NOT, dismissing vetran guy's thoughts, as you have a comfortable think before you speak perspective.....Kudos again

Loved your reaction but the music audio wasn't great. Very muffled and tinny and all the dynamics were lost. I'd recommend listening with headphones. It'll sound like a completely different song. Not a criticism, just want you to enjoy it to the fullest extent. Ren's an incredible artist. When you hear him with half-decent audio, he'll REALLY blow you away! :)
Yeah it actually sounded a lot better on our side, my system is old and my editing skills are a work in progress! We had an incredibly generous renegade purchase us a new custom computer so that’s in the process of being built! So the quality should increase significantly in the near future!

"Chalk outlines" refers to the feeling of emotional absence we sometimes experience when taking anti-depressants. The very first word that Chinchilla sings is, "Sertraline" - it's a drug I'm all too familiar with, and the title of the song perfectly describes the feeling of being present, but somehow emotionally disengaged with what's going on - you become no more than a chalk outline.
There's something very weird going on with the audio (of the track, not your voices). It's really horrible - apart from a lot of background white noise (your air-con?), the vocals sound like they're sort of going in and out of phase - or maybe it's a noise limiter? (I noticed there was some sort of limiter on "Hi Ren"). Might I suggest you listen back to your vid online, and you'll hear what I mean.
