  • Oh, Bethlehem
    Music: Jónas Sen
Text in Polish: Discalced Carmelite Sisters, Iceland
    1. Oh, Bethlehem, a crown of the cities,
    What miracle happened in you!
Why had not you known/recognized a day,
    When God arrived in you?
    Saint Joseph knocks in vain
On the closed hearts and doors.
(In vain the Lord of the world
    seeks Love to be welcomed.)
    or - better translation:
    In vain Love/God-Love seeks love,
And the Lord of the world seeks to be welcomed.
    2. His throne He wanted not to raise to the stars
So it shined with the earthly glory, or: to shine us/on us with the earthly glory
    Mingled in pilgrim’s simple trail-
The Divinity covered with road’s dust.
In the shabby stable that bowed its roof
    God revealed His majesty,
Simple hearts had known the sign
That this Child was their King.
Ref: Angels’ hymn sounds with God’s glory,
And Son of God brings peace to the people.
    3. Here, where the lava fields are silvered with ice,
In the whirlwind of our worries,
God enters simple life on earth
To cuddle human fate in Love.
Here, where the night and northern lights
Sometimes throw wispy train of light,
God Child descends to us today,
Cries out in silence: I am your Day!
Ref: Angels’ hymn sounds with God’s glory,
And Son of God brings peace to the people.
    4. Holy Virgin, in Your arms the Lord arrives
    To pay world’s debt off.
Make my heart a shelter for Him,
If He accepted a stable, a manger.
God Child put in my soul dry snippets
As if they were a spark.
May the fire of love start to shine in it
And may it be so forever.
Ref: Angels’ hymn sounds with God’s glory,
And Son of God brings peace to the people.
