    Why are the white cliffs of Dover infamous?

    • @TheShellie35
      @TheShellie35 Год назад

      The cliffs have great symbolic value in Britain because they face towards continental Europe across the narrowest part of the English Channel (approximately 20 miles (32 km) between coasts), where invasions have historically threatened and against which the cliffs form a symbolic guard. During the Second World War, thousands of allied troops on the little ships in the Dunkirk evacuation saw the welcoming sight of the cliffs and in the summer of 1940, reporters gathered at Shakespeare Cliff to watch aerial dogfights between German and British aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Also made famous by the 1942 wartime classic "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover" by Dame Vera Lynn (you can find it on you tube)

    • @mileswithme

      This was not Uber, it was a transportation service. We had to pre-pay a deposit which meant we would have lost the money if we cancelled. We were not late for our cruise - just later than we had planned.

      @@mileswithme The trains in the UK are geared up for people traveling with mobility needs, you just need to give them 24 hrs notice if you can. They will have people who would not only help you on the train but with your bags as well. I'm a 👨‍🦽 user and I use them all the time with only the odd little issue. The best thing is that the assistance is free.

      Neither Uber nor black cab. It was a private service - which we can't recommend based off our experience. We did learn about the education/testing for the Black Cab drivers - and that's amazing! Next time we visit, the black cabs are definitely our preferred way of getting around the city!

    The driver being that late and certainly the stopped for coffee and a breakfast is not at all normal and the height of ignorance.
    Was it an Uber?
    I always look up a local taxi company or ask a hotel staff member.
    UK taxi drivers have local knowledge, are CRB (criminal record bureau) checked have rules to abide by, etc...
    Black Taxi drivers in London go through a thing called The Knowledge. Which is worth looking up, you'll be amazed.
    They have to learn all the routes, 25,000 streets, 100,000 landmarks and history or given areas and has been a thing since 1865.

      The British Isles is a geographical name for the islands which include Ireland the larges one called Great Britain and smaller one called Ireland. The British isles are not only made up of the 4 countries in the UK., they include all the islands like Scottish islands and the Isle of Mann etc. You are getting it mixed up with the UK, which is not geographical, but is a political and economic union, whereas British Isles is geographical.
