Your company did an AMAZING job on the snooze target feature. It’s easy to use and is so helpful! It puts my mind at ease…no more yellow!! And it’s so easy to cancel the snooze if you messed up. It is also a smart idea to add the “z”s so you know it’s snoozed. Love it! Well done!
Found it odd at the beginning of the video about "why would you want to see your electric bill 8 years ago?". I've been on YNAB since 2/20 - so, only a bit over 3 years. However, I enjoy looking at the networth graphs. But, in saying that, I really do like drilling back in history. I added some smart thermostats and I use the data to help if they made a change. As well, my neighbors and I had a lawn service company and we felt it was getting more expensive (subjectively / gut feel). After looking at the history on YNAB, I was able to show that yes, they've gone up over 2.5 times since we initially hired them. We cancelled the service and went with another company. Data is gold.
Sure, I don't have the same category groups, items, tracking accounts, etc. But, I just moved /collapsed items into new or existing items. Everything just carries forward.
I think we meant it's not helpful in terms of helping you decide how much to allocate toward that category today. Having the data available to look up is valuable from time to time. But using information that old to guide day-to-day decisions may not be. As you said, the cost changed a lot in that time! If you were basing what you budget today on that bill from 3 years ago, you'd be way off! ~BenB
@@YNABofficial - OK - I see. For me, it's about the data to see trends. For current month, I use "Average Spent" which only looks back 12 months anyways. For the next coming month, I use "Assigned Last Month". Once it becomes current month, I go through all items again and apply "Average Spent". I used to do "Average Spent" for months in the future, but I would ultimately underbudget the future since I was budgeting 3 to 6 months out. Since future months have no spend, "Average Spent" for those months were zero and hence my underbudgeting. So, for future months, I use "Assigned Last Month" to keep me in the ballpark until I do "Average Spent" when a month becomes current. But the second point kind of doesn't matter. Since a recent episode of yours, I only budget out one month now (much easier) and keep all my extra funds in a category item called "Ready to Assign Holding". As - I think Ernie said, if I'm underbudget, I take from another category item. I never take from the "Ready to Assign Holding" as that's for the future. Thanks. Keep up the great work. Edit: Wasn't trying to base the budget off of something 3 years ago. However, the data saved us from spending blindly due to cost creep. Because of the YNAB, was able to see the trend and decided to pursue other options.
@@YNABofficial Yes the old data is likely not helpful budget wise but if you ever wonder when you went somewhere or when you purchased something "follow the money" is very valuable. I have been using Microsoft Money since the mid 90's and still do to this day of course now in conjunction with YNAB. If I wonder when I went to a vacation spot many years ago I just have to check Money. It is not critical but it is fun to jog the memory time to time.
Ben’s moment at the end cracked me up. I have something on my desk called a fineapple. It’s a pineapple holding a sign that says: “It’s fine. You’re fine. Everything’s fine.” For just those moments! 😂❤🍍
Curious about Ernie’s comment about loan accounts having to be unlinked. If there’s an option to link to the financial institution that holds an auto loan, for example, why would I not link it and have those transactions automatically imported?
I’d love to see a live budget! Even if the totals are hidden. The diapers section has me wondering if I should rethink my budget and how I have things separated
Ernie's done it a couple times this year! - ruclips.net/video/AAAgGHPlC3k/видео.html - ruclips.net/video/YQKVIaMWvro/видео.html Also if you search "YNAB Budget With Me" you'll find a bunch of videos of people going through their routines! ~BenB
I have serval sources of income. One of my sources come at the beginning of the month (1st) but I normally will get paid a couple of days before, which will also show in YNAB. Should I change the date of the pay to the first or do nothing and just don't assign it til the first of the month.
Generally, best practice is to date the transaction for when it hit your bank and go ahead and assign it to categories as soon as possible. You don't have to wait until next month to start assigning money there. ~BenB
! have been around since the earliest days Had to make a new budget for the new software when i caved in and subscribed🍭 . Last year i did a first refresh after many years- refreshed when i had lapsed a bit and it was easier..... love YNAB!🍭🍭🍭🍭
As a US expat living in Mexico for an extended period I am struggling with budgeting USD and Mexican Pesos using two accounts. I'm aware of the article on point, but really need a detailed step by step video with a real live budget. Help!
How long did it take you to actually embrace your true expenses? I'm doing my best but I just don't feel like I have any idea what they would be. For example, last month we went to urgent care 5-6 times. I lost count. In previous years, we maybe went 1-2 a year. New to YNAB (month 2) so I didn't have any money built up in medical yet. And there is no way I could have known I was going to need $120 in copays in November. 😢 I was able to roll with the punches. But I don't feel like I can't embrace spending because I'm always afraid of needing to cover overspending/emergencies still.
I guess I'm just thinking maybe this is why so many people are doing more tracking at first? I still check my categories before I spend. But I haven't experienced that feeling of being able to spend without guilt in any of those discretionary categories yet for fear that I will need that money to roll with the punches.
It takes time to really get it dialed in. I'd say a year to really know for sure what categories you need and how much you need to save. And even ten years in, I'm still adding things and making adjustments. Just remember you're better off if you save *anything* for these unexpected expenses, and you'll get better and better at this as you go. You got this! ~BenB
I assign money into the next month in my personal budget. I think it's the easiest way! But for curiosity's sake, I'm testing out the "next month" category in the joint budget to see how I feel about it. Budget nerdy af 🤓
I do have a question, maybe for the next Q&A? I am from Australia, and I use a tracking account to keep my department store Christmas Club balance (Myer, monthly contributions). I move the balance to a new checking account ('Gift Cards') when they issued me the gift vouchers in November. But the balance from this account is added to my overall Budget (ie mixing with the actual money)... is there anyway around this? I didn't want to keep the balance in the Tracking account, as it wouldn't let me categorize my Christmas purchases and I want to track how much I spent on each family member for Christmas. Thanks heaps! I love watching you guys on the treadmill, make the dreadful exercise much more tolerable!!! 🤣

would love to see a Budget with Me of Ernie doing his annual reset.
