Absolute Beginners Guide to Procreate 5.0 Photomanipulation

  • This guide is done for photomanipulation and use of the Procreate app from the perspective of absolute beginners. I tried to keep it a reasonable length and include many reminders as well as think about the viewpoint of someone who may have never done digital art or used the Procreate app at all. I'm sorry If it falls short for anyone, I tried my best. Please pause, rewind, and take notes; as well as try out the tips yourself for better learning and information retention (rather than attempting to follow along with me in real time). I'll be making another absolute beginners guide focusing on digital painting soon.
    Some of the important functions and features not specifically covered in the video include: Flipping the selected area, liquefy tool, warp transform, blur, other painting tips, other layer modes (other than the very basics of hard light and multiply), etc.
    Please do experiment, practice and study from other tutorials not just this one. Keep learning!
    Music:
    Opening) Ancient power of serpents (CCO)
    2) Excite Val ( a song I made in Garageband)
    3) Quester (a song I made in Garageband)
    As always Constructive criticism, suggestions for future videos, and other comments (that are not just cruel) welcome in the comment section below.
    New video soon.

    One thing I would recommend is making a copy of layers you worked hard on, like the cat and set it as invisible. That way if you want to experiment with different ideas on that piece you can just delete it and then use the saved backup copy if you don’t like how it turns out. It saves time from having to hit the undo button a million times or having to reupload the image and cut everything back out again if it’s too far gone. Also, if you back out of the project and open it back up later it sometimes doesn’t save the editing history so you’re unable to hit the redo button. Always good to make a backup copy of some things and set them as invisible just in case.

    thank you so much. I'm another oldie I guess, at 63 years of age and got procreate last year with an iPad air and apple pencil to hopefully do more with my art. Here it is a year later and I'm just getting started. But it looks like this is going to be very helpful. I actually am just trying to collage two photos together to then trace to create my reference image for a watercolor painting. I'm excited to have found you and your kind voice and will be back tomorrow to go over this slowly and take notes as you suggested. I will be checking out your other videos as well in case there is one specifically for merging two photos together.

    I am so grateful to you! I could select and transform on a drawing but not on a photo and I was wondering why. I thought maybe since it was a painting program that perhaps impossible?. I can't diagnose my issue yet, but at least I know I can use photos. I am excited to follow this step by step to learn the process. Stellar presentation! I think what I have learned that was confusing to me before is that each item removed from a background must begin as its own layer. So if I have a photo with 6 different animals which I wanted to rearrange, I would need to make 6 layers of the entire photo, to extract and separate the animals. I was thinking that I could "cut holes" in one photo to select the animals and pull them out. But what you do is erase the background.

    • @valasafantastic1055
      @valasafantastic1055  3 года назад

      Yes select each animal to give it its own separate layer. The ipad model will set a different layer limit for each canvas size. Larger more 'dpi' (Dots per inch) canvases will have fewer layers and will reach the 'maximum layers' sooner. BUT higher resolution canvases may be necessary for higher quality work you intend to for example print. Erase the background is the version you would use instead when the priority is to save layers. Then use the selection tool to move the animals around. I have many more tips but as this was a simplified 'absolute beginners version' I simply couldn't fit them all. I'll be doing more in this series soon. I am sorry I'm really not sure why your imported photo layer is not selecting, I hope you can resolve this issue soon.

    Can you explain how to shade that well and what brushes you used. Thx. Btw it looks very nice.

    • @valasafantastic1055
      @valasafantastic1055  2 года назад

      It was while ago.... I believe I used a large soft airbrush for the large soft areas of shading. I done the shading on its own layer and set the layer mode to multiply. I was adjusting the cat to fit into the scene so using the lighting of the sky. Look at reference of a similar subject lit in a similar way and copy the way the shadows are. For harder edges on the shadow use a harder edged brush. Spectra is a good default brush for shadows on fur as its not 'too hard' edged and has a nice natural workability and texture. I still need to make a shadow painting video guide someday, been on my list for years...
      You can adjust the size and opacity of brushes AND the layer mode and layer opacity. If the layer is at 100% and not dark enough duplicate the layer and adjust the opacity of the new copy. Once happy merge the two shadow layers into one layer (to save layer space in Procreate).
      I hope it helps.

    do you have a suggestion? I know that this request may be out of place.

    • @valasafantastic1055
      @valasafantastic1055  3 года назад +1

      double check your bluetooth is turned on in your settings. (Apple pencil can't connect when bluetooth is turned off). Also ensure your apple pencil is charged. In the 'Prefs' tab under 'Actions' (wrench icon) in Procreate is the gesture controls option under 'gesture controls' then 'general' to 'reset to defaults'. I'd try that if the other two suggestions above don't work. I'd also ensure my ios is fully up to date, battery charge is full and that procreate is updated to the latest version.
      I hope this helps. Its the best I can offer. Good luck.

      This is Procreate app on the ipad pro. It works on apple devices but is best on the ipad Pro. Its very easy to search for it in the App store. It is around $10 USD and gets free updates (one time payment.) An amazing program but you need to invest in the ipad pro hardware to use it. It also requires the apple pencil to get the full use out of. This video is specifically Procreate tips not general digital art tips. I hope this response clarifies.
