Finally gotta camshaft with a fuel pump lobe on it to swap into my daddies 86 Silverado so we can use the stock manual fuel pump on the 5.7 350 vortec.

So many people out there trying to always have the best of the best. It’s not bad but some people truly just enjoy tinkering with what they have. It’s about having fun, not having the best of everything. Keep it up my man!
I agree!
Couldn't have said better...
well said
Plus, maybe you just want a nice sounding engine, with a little "giddy up" for the streets without going all out to compete at the local drag strip. I much prefer "Street Cars" over "Drag Cars". Who cares if you can do the ¼ mile in 9 seconds. A daily driver with a little heat under the hood is far more impressive
I don’t have a shop either and have to do stuff outside in gravel. I spend more time hunting tools than I do working. My tools are scattered between 2 sheds, 3 trucks and a utility room.
Same here no garage just a small tin shed lol
I'm working out of a converted dog kennal, 4 tool boxes and 2 welding carts. It sucks dragging them across the yard in the grass
Man, amén brother. Hunting tools and walking 40miles back and forth looking for a small Allen wrench.
This is me exactly!
I had a electric pump mounted in the bed of my pick up,there quick and easy to install,I'm 63 I'm old school too so i understand, your dad is lucky to have a son that knows and will do the work.
I'm a manual fuel pump man myself. I love the content man, been a fan of old Chevy's and I've had 2 k10s and now I have 2 k5s.
Look at ya go my man lol. 12k subs tons of views . Hell yeah!!! Support this channel yall
Truck sounds great, I like how your dad wants it built. Simple and sweet. A mechanical fuel pump and a good quadrajet will give you the best reliability and driveability possible for an oldschool vehicle. Now you just gotta button up all the little stuff and he will be cruising in no time.
I love the way this dude talks.
Gotta love a budget/ simple build with a good ole boy to get er goin thanks for the content
Make sure you guys sign the RPM act! The EPA is trying to ban any mods to muscle cars or race cars
Laugh all you want... but quadrajets make balls of torque!!!!!
and get decent gas mileage when you stay outta it.my holley is a damned piglet but damned when it hits,it hits hard.
I think people are catching on because damn they are asking to much for them. Autozone sells them for like 450.00.
And I forgot to mention that my truck has the fuel pump located in the gas tank so I don't think that I need the cam with the fuel pump lobe on it. Thanks and keep making your vidz - you crack me up dude...sorry about your tools falling off the truck...!!
Enjoy your videos. I have to swap the 350 out of my 86 Chevy C20 with a 350 vortec I just picked up. No garage, I have to do it in an alley behind the house. I’ll have to get a couple sheets of heavy plywood to roll the engine hoist on. Keep the videos coming !!! I’ll have to give the video a try with mine. But I’m sure it’ll be more of a comedy of errors !!!!
Thanks for watching man and ya just gotta work with what ya got! I say go for it on the video too you never know you might blow up lol
That's a sweet looking old RIG man, keep up the good work man 👍
I love working on old original stuff. It's more enjoyable then taking 2 years to learn how to change oil in a 2020 camry. Lol!
I love those Square Body Ford Rangers @2:52
Cool stuff ! Like your thinking ,my 74 is old school 292,works great.
Dale Earnhardt jr's twin brother..😎👊🏻
Great job buddy you remind me of me when I was a young man and thanks for the videos you are doing Great 👍💪💪🇺🇸 from Alabama 👍 watching 🇺🇸
Me I've got an 1989 chey short bed 5.7 love the truck
Thats a Bad ass technique.... thanks for video.
"didn't even look at the cam bearings, usually don't wanna do that" lmao been there haha
Got the same truck only a 83. Gonna rebuild the original 305 and upgrade to a 700r4. Mines the same colors and everything!
I enjoy your videos man its good shit. I love them ol squarebody chevys. Ive got a 85 k10 I'm building a small block 358 for and I'm so ready to get it done its been way over due for me to build a good engine for the truck. The truck has been in the family since it was new in 85 my grandpa had it and hes no longer with us so it has some sentimental value to it. Plan on fixin it up and keepin it in the family and then when my son gets old enough to drive I'm gonna pass it down to him
You can use a manual pump off of a corvette they have deeper bowl
I just thought about something else.... I use the cork gaskets and spray hairspray on the cover and the side of the gasket that hits the cover... I don't put anything on the other side. I can pull and put several times without losing a gasket. I also go kinda easy on the rtv... as it will plug the pickup pipe. I also use rite stuff for glue when I have to
I might try that always down to hear other people's ides and opinions
That was pretty good video love the 350 vortec
I don't know why but for some reason I'm getting your videos late and I've been a subscriber of yours for a while and I just now seen this video
I was thinking about painting my truck a Midnight Blue Pearl but lately been thinking it might be better financially to stick with a dark brown .
THANK YOU im grabbing my buddy and were starting today!
Yup real life man.
This is exactly what I want to do. I have a 1976 c10 stepside with a 250 Inline six with a 3 on the tree manual transmission in it. I also have a junk 1996 Chevy express 1500 with a 5.7 vortec and 4l60e auto trans in it. I want to swap the vortec and auto trans into my c10. But I haven't been able to tell if it has the mechanical fuel pump port yet but I'm praying it does. I want to keep the truck as mechanical as possible but for now I'm gonna have to deal with the electronics to get it running and driving if I can't find a good 700r4 and the mechanical fuel pump port. I'm no mechanic lol just a young man trying to make a nice truck drive again. Maybe I'll do a RUclips rebuild on the vortec if it has the mechanical fuel pump port. Update:September 21st 2023, about a year later I've finally checked and my vortec does have the hole bored for the mechanical fuel pump push rod! I've decided to stick with the 3spd Saginaw because rebuilding auto transmissions is a painful process. Also the Saginaw is stupid easy to rebuild and the parts are cheap. I won't have overdrive but at least the truck can be registered, insured and driven. Just picked up an engine hoist and will be researching a lot on how to do the swap. Coming back to this video to see how to swap the camshafts again😅. Hopefully by next summer my 1976 Chevy c10 stepside will be vortec powered!
I ain't here to put no one down so don't take me wrong hopefully. I always keep the electric pump as close to the tank as possible as they don't like to suck very far but they seem to push real well and also, I have seen those electric pumps get a mind of their own and go in reverse. I turned it around just to prove some one wrong an it worked... remember this tho, It was working for a long time the other way so It wasn't just mounted and done wrong. I had to run a electric pump for each tank. and another thing... they don't like running dry as they seem to burn out doing that. I also have poured some thick oil into them and then hooked to the tank and they went to pumping just fine. I like the fact that when I would run dry on a tank that I could dump fuel in and then it would pump it to the carb right now. I don't know if you watch Derick at vice grip garage but his last video was on some bow ties. I think that you would like this one as he got a truck from a fellow that has quite a few of them and its neat to look at... cheers on the fourth
Your daddy's right. I'm same way love the old school shit more electronics means more unreliable. I daily mine 350 with a q jet and been wanting a cam for a little extra power
just stabbed a healthy flat tappet, vortec heads, intake and carb onto my old school 30fried.jumped up from 150 to about 275 horsepower....itll blow the tires off no problemo.just take your time, get the rockers set right(i broke my cam in with half a turn of preload instead of 3/4) works perfect,it aint hard.just be methodical and pay attention to what you are doing, torque specs, good gaskets, clean everything up right!! send it
Building hotrods hell yeah!!!!!
Man I'm digging the videos. Always learning something!
Thanks man
You are the man Brotha Lol bowtie 4life I'm all about it.!!!
Love them sbc. Will put one in my 98 tj one day. Keep up the good work. 👍
Looking forward to the next video on this. Its gonna run good.
Nice 17 min cam swap. Love the vids bro
Thanks man
good deal dad ought to be happy
Congrats on your 4 wheeler btw, just picked me up a cheap hisun UTV side by side lol.
I have a good q-jet been sitting for about a year or so might need the usual couple dried up gaskets replaced I'll let it go for 75 bucks including the shipping it's numbers say it's a 77 truck carburetor if you're interested
Awesome videos man loves it here in Nova Scotia Canada lol
Thanks for the video, I always love a sbc!
This guy is awesome bro I love your videos keep it bro love the C10
Thanks man
Man I made the mistake of pulling my distributor.....I caught HELL trying to get that thing stabbed back in correctly.....I finally gave up and took it to the shop, I was pissed.
Dang man it's really simple I hate you had to take her to a shop hopefully they didn't charge you out the ass
I love wrenching on my '77 k5 and '76 c10. Problem is they never need anything. And if they do its a cheap fix. Same for the Ford 300.
Should listen they are right bout the timeing
Timing is fine
You make it look easy Bud
The dampener came off without turning the engine over because you had the rocker arms all off and all the valves were closed
Well I guess a used cam with a set of used lifters from another cam I guess you don't have to worry about keeping it running long enough to break everything in I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around this whole thing you're still my boy though LOL
I guess you never built any junkyard rides lol
Nothing like air in your tank
You still got your S10 it's nice one
Unfortunately not
Go ahead on Big Dawg!👍
Sounds like a tractor..I reckon..
Thems there are some true hot rods Dad gummet!
I'm a break that curse in Jesus name 🙏✝️ I bet that cam will make some good torque and run out strong with them vortec heads
work with what you got!!
3:00 who's making all that noise 😂
Guy standing in the doorway.
Hey Dude....I Just wanted to say thank you for this video....I've been wondering how to put a new bigger Cam in my 1988 chevy 350 ...5.7 Liter Silverado 4x4 off road edition....It's not the Vortec motor I don't believe...?? I think that it's just the regular SB 350 with TBI...? Could you plz send me the specs of a cam that will be a good fit for my motor as I am new to all of this and one more question........Do I need to change my valve springs before installing the new Cam...??? Thanks a bunch....Steve C.
I want my impala to sound like this damn it lol
Still waiting on that burn out bro. 🤘
Geez I thought that older guy was going to hurt hisself
You'll be OK without a bronze gear bro unless you just want to run a bronze gear I've run regular gear with my roller motors for years without any problems 😉
Yeah figured I'd run it for a little bit then pull it and see how it looks and go from there
that cam looked like a comp cams roller cam. they use cast cam cores for their rollers, same as a flat tappet. regular gear is fine. a stock gm roller or billet still roller has to use a melonized or bronze gear. you can take the stock gear off the stock distributor and swap it over, but make sure its the same diameter. melonized gears work with any cam style.
Get some racing rockers
This guy looks familiar
What kind of starter you got on your black c10? Thing sounds like it’s got some juice
It's a mini high torque starter I don't remember brand name
My question is why didn't you put the cam in the motor before you put it down in the truck just looked like it would of saved you lot of work.
Because I wasn't thinking lol
I have a 5-3 I was wondering if you could help me with the gap on the tappets
Well people tell you if they tell you that line in the mud got to dot is on number six that's wrong specifically states in the manual that if you line the Dachshund the doctor dots number one is on compression stroke that's what you wanted on that's the way I've always did it all my life whoever is telling you to bring it your timing it on number six is full of crap because the book won't tell you that and you should always run new lifters on a camshaft and the reason why your lifters probably won't come out of that motor is either one or two things they got carbon on the bottom of the lifters or they were torqued essentially too tight and their mushroomed a little bit at the bottom and that can cause faulty fault and the lifters and camshaft I know I've been through that quite a few times running use lifters on another Cam that is not cut or hasn't been run on them on that cam you should always run new lifters on a used cam or a new cam or whatever you should never run you lifters from another can on a camshaft that you're putting in there man too bad you didn't live down around Oklahoma I got a nice Cam that I can't tell you that the ratio off the top of my head but the lift is a 443 to a 465 lift pretty good duration I'd sell somebody for a hundred bucks it's got 2 hours on it it was too big for my motor I didn't want to put the money in it to make it go so anyhow you see somebody wants one $100 bill it's if your mother thumper
It's a roller cam you can re use roller lifters no problem. I been thru all this before too lol
@@bowtieguy601 or for some reason that's what I just pulled out of mine is a roller can and I put used lifters back on at one of the cans I put in there and it's straight up ate the loops off of it
Yeah sometimes things do go wrong
Ol neighbor dun maybe sugared your tank
Nice
Hey Bowtie I have a Chevy 350 TBI that I drive everyday I'm looking for that nice cam sound what the right size cam should I get
If you're keeping it tbi then I would stay with something small.. tbi system doesn't like lumpy cams very much although you can get a custom chip burnt for it that will help
You Mentioned Putting A Bronze Distributor Gear On The Distributor. What's The Reason For That. I Have A 98 GMC And My Distributor Gear Was Chewed Up Bad, So I Put A New Gear On. Then About A Day Later My Engine Started Knocking.
Something about the heat treating of the roller cams need a bronze gear but I'm not 100% on all of it so I'd do some research yourself first.. could be your cam gear and distributor gear are just not meshing together right
@@bowtieguy601 Okay Appreciate The Help
@@bowtieguy601 melonite gears are even better, they dont break down and wear as fast as brass gears neither....check them out.i took a gear from a tpi distributor, bored it out cause the shaft size is a little smaller and used that(they are melonite)
U need and elder brock I got some
Where you located n how much
I just bought them 1/2 an 3/8 Dewalt impacts how do you like the 1/2 inch
It's nice to have for sure
i subscribed you seem to know chevys well always good to find more bowtie fans..i have a question my old 89 has ac but since i fixed ac in it temp will run up to 215 ish at idle on hot days i usually turn ac off so dont know if it goes more is that normal i know 210 is because im running a 195 so i know 210 at heads is normal. i replaced everything on cooling system and nothing changed so either condenser is bad causing it to do that or something else is off. timing seems good starts up fairly easy.
oh without ac on truck runs 200 to 210 usually just under 210 even pulling 7 tons down the hwy
I'm no ac guy but I've seen n had a few vehicles myself that ran a little warmer with the ac on especially on a hot day... Like you said tho could be condensor clogged or something.. maybe try a 180 thermostat and see how that does
I see a bunch of vehicles running 215 220 but I don't like running mine over 200
@@bowtieguy601 yeah i tried a 160 180 and now have 195 but the thing is a fully opened 195 and a fully opened 160 is same thing it wont make it run cooler if its already struggling with the 195. 210 is supoosed to be about normal thats why its in the center of the guage lol but i hate seeing 215 ish with my ac on and doesnt do it all the time mostly on really hot days. everything is new and upgraded to a 34 inch radiator which my truck is 3/4 it shouldve had a damn 34 inch to begin with like the suburbans do
@@bowtieguy601 may need block flushed idk but antifreeze stays green and full looks like new antifreeze after 12k miles still
Did you end up drilling that vortec block for the mechanical pump???
Nope it was already like that from the factory but the stock cam has to be changed since it doesn't have a fuel pump lobe
I need good cam for my 350
hi , could you tell me exactly what cam you got, this is exactly the cam ive been looking for to put back in my 5.7 vortec , thanks
Man I don't even remember I got it from a guy that had it in a tbi engine so it's small
The 350 is all stock
Yes besides the small cam
I did a cam swap on my 98 350 vortec last week. Now it will start. But idle high, and if I they to give it any has at all it stalls.. Any ideas?

It's a small cam a guy had custom ground for a tbi engine.. I mainly just wanted it for the fuel pump lobe to run a manual fuel pump
I hate to say it boss, but there is no such thing as a good quadrapuke... they make good boat anchor's that's it.
That's not true. 99% of the time when you have issues with a quadrajet usually is from other problems like a rusty/dirty/clogged fuel system or a fuel pump that puts out too much or not enough fuel pressure or some one who doesnt understand how they work tries to modify them or tunes them incorrectly. Alot of people would remove the vacuum breaks which help pull the choke off and delay the secondarys from opening too soon and alot of people set the air door spring way too loose which causes the engine to bog. If quadrajets were all junk, then why did gm use them on almost all their cars and trucks from the late 60s to 1990?Also if they were junk why did they use them in boats from the 70s to the early 2000s? Quadrajets can work amazing and are one of the most reliable automotive type of carburetors ever used. They are also one of the safer ones to use because all the gaskets and seals on them is above fuel level meaning they almost never leak, unlike holley type carbs that have multiple gaskets below fuel level that are notorious for leaking which is obviously a huge fire hazard. I will admit though that fine tuning a quadrajet can be a challenge and they do not like to be used on engines with really large cams with alot of overlap unless you modify the idle circuit and power piston spring. But for a stock to mild engine they work amazing and are hard to beat.
@@briang4470 or there just junk, they were ok back in 80's 90s but there junk regardless
I've had some good ones and I've some really bad ones lol.. the main problem I've had with them is leaking gas everywhere
@@bowtieguy601 that's actually quite unusual. The main seals and gaskets are well above fuel level so chances are that if its leak gas from the gasket or out the vent that either the float level is way too high, you have too much fuel pressure, or a faulty needle and seat. I have had way more fuel leaks from holley type carbs than anything else, the edelbrock and quadrajet usually never leak because of their design or if they do leak they usually just dump into the intake rather than all over the engine.
If you're going to be a mechanic you need to build you a shop
It's on the long list of stuff I need but can't afford right now lol
