      They think that there is something for them to gain.
      The system is not delivering for them, and they would rather break the system, rational or not.
      Critical mass. Once a certain level of polarisation is achieved the voices of moderation are drowned out.
      Safety in numbers, rational or not.
      Us versus Them. In particular, as a generalisation, people are happy to see the law applied to others but not members of their own family.
      The person who acts according to a principle of equity always pays for those who cheat. Good and bad do not balance out, even when making things as fair as possible.

    At least Trump is very open about who he is and what he wants to do. The record is very clear from looking at his past presidency and all the stuff he says in public. If people still choose to vote him into office then it can be argued, on some level, that the people agreed, democratically, to potentially end democracy.

    • @davorrudovic9580
      @davorrudovic9580 Месяц назад

      That's the truth. There is core Trump supporter that thinks that democracy has destroyed an idea of America they have in their minds. And the way to save it is to have someone like Orban at the top, who'll defend white christian culture, stop immigration, halt what they consider LGBT propaganda, third wave feminism - that's much important to them than marginally improving unemployment or infrastructure. For them this is the fight for the soul of the country. And people like Orban or Putin don't have executive restrictions that US presidents have. And if those restrictions need to be lifted so that Trump can do what needs to be done so be it.

      it did (luckily too late); "A Schedule F appointment was a job classification in the excepted service of the United States federal civil service that existed briefly at the end of the Trump administration during 2020-2021. It would have contained policy-related positions, removing their civil service protections and making them easy to fire. It was never fully implemented, and no one was appointed to it before it was repealed at the beginning of the Biden administration.
      The purpose of the provision was to increase the President's control over the federal career civil service. While proponents stated this would increase flexibility and accountability, it was widely criticized as providing means to retaliate against federal officials for political reasons. It was estimated that tens or hundreds of thousands of career employees could have lost their civil service protections, increasing the number of political appointments by a factor of ten."

    A British writer penned one of the best descriptions of Donald Trump. It read:
    “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?
    A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
    Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
    Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
    There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
    And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down.
    So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
    • Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
    • You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
    This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.
    God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws - he would make a Trump.
    And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”
    ---Nate White.

      Trump is liked by so many precisely BECAUSE he is like that. He's a proxy, an "in your face protest", against a system, a political order many feel has betrayed them. Trump is a congenital liar, but he's honest about the kind of thing he's going to do once in power: "Dictator for a 'day' ", pardoning criminals, taking revenge against those who opposed him, purging the civil service and military of the "disloyal".
      If America elects this monster, they won't recognise their country.

      He did once say something about getting it prior to the 2020 election. Paraphrasing here, but said he understood how voters were put off by the other side that calls them racist, brow beats them, thinks they’re deplorable, etc… He didn’t say it was enough to vote for Trump, simply that he finally comprehended it.
      I don’t blame people for hating Trump. He is an a-hole and I think the country would definitely be better off if Hillary had won back in 2016. However, at this point in time I cannot vote for the Party that thinks millions of intruders coming over the border a year is great and anyone who doesn’t like it is evil. The Party who pretends white supremacy is the number one issue facing America. The Party that focuses on utter nonsense while 100 major cities across the U.S. are sinking into decay. I doubt Trump will be able to do anything palpable about it, but I’m not voting for the Democrats if they’re going to play make-believe with what issues are truly affecting taxpayers in our day-to-day existence.

      A few reasons, but the most important is that he had a lot of people in his ear telling him “you absolutely cannot do this.” The team he has now and the people who will be surrounding him in terms 2 will only be saying “you absolutely have to do this and you are completely within your rights to do so.”
      The fact is, there actually were adults in the room for most of Trump’s first term. His team and the people that surround him now are specifically organizing things so that won’t be the case if he wins again. Their motivations actually seem to be way more radical than Trump’s personal motivations are, but that really makes no difference.

    Why not just speak directly to all of the various categories of people who have been voting for him... What I mean is not, why don't you two guys - but why doesn't anyone, from the frightened liberal side of the spectrum of opinion these days - speak directly to the various categories of people who have been voting for him - and explain to them directly why he seems so frightening - and listen to them explain how they understand their interests, too - and maybe an actual public dialogue might get started, or something.
    I have difficulty understanding whether or how much people on the left side of the political spectrum really even believe what they're saying, or not. Trump represents whole huge swathes of the U.S. public. You can break it down into however many demographics as you like - but the point is that if he's about to become the tyrant who overthrows American democracy once and for all - and that's not just a way of entertaining oneself with paranoid fantasies but a fear actually taken seriously - we had better start talking to those various demographics, now. Because it's going to be in their name (and there are a lot of different such demographics - and they aren't all racial ones) that now only possible dictator is going to institute the Tyranny.

    • @jimboyle236
      @jimboyle236 2 месяца назад

      Well you are speaking with a side which tends to make up their own reality. I'm a former Republican but I'll be grouped in with the liberals, you know the side that is against Trump because Trump himself has been instrumental in pitting one side against another, by calling every one who opposed him as a rhino, liberal etc. he has been dividing us to save his own ass. This is the problem with a malignant narcissist. They/he will burn it all down to save himself from prosecution that is very much deserved and if you don't believe that we don't have much to talk about.

      Trump doesn't deserve to be allowed to run again. Shouldn't Jan 6,the have been enough. We've already lost somewhat because him being the lead candidate normalizes what he did, which definitely was to overthrow the democracy in a sense that he would be elected again regardless of losing the popular vote. Yeah a lot of posters here. Still have some sort of jaded attitude towards those who are trying to shut this criminal down and keep them away from power, where he should never should have been in the first place. Now because apparently the courts can be gamed or don't move enough for actual justice, we have to sit through another election with this guy? Through the stolen election thing again because he has no bottom and has created an army of others with no bottom purely running on emotions. The so-called liberals are emotional too. They will say but who wouldn't be seeing this BS going on? It tells me that America is in decline.

      Consider Colorado’s decision a “legal theory” that failed in the court. 1 for Colorado, 150 for a failed incumbent.
      When in power, and after wiping out the civil servants who put the constitution before the president, the situation is vastly different. This is no fan fiction, this is outlined by the Trump campaign and current republicans in power, even those who prefer a Republican candidate over Trump. Why enshrine democracy when it results in your party having minority power in roughly 6 year cycles when you can enshrine your party’s power indefinitely? Well, only the reasoning is to maintain democracy - which is in opposition to the first goal. So away it goes. Don’t look at me, look at Republicans in Congress. Their actions continue to show which comes first.
