I've been on amitriptyline for about a year. It has done wonders for my neuropathic pain and it is such a blessing as I am able to sleep. About 2 hours after taking it I feel drowsy and hungry so I manage a few extra calories at bedtime too! I don't feel hungover or gross in the morning like with some other sleep meds. I'm just on a super low dose. It's all I need to help with the above symptoms and it also serves to prevent the worst of my migraines. It's actually the only med I won't give up. I kinda love it LOL ;)
+zennmomma That is so good to hear! Im glad you had such a positive experience! That sounds like the benefits I need for sure. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Your work is beautiful, Christina, as beautiful as your aura! I was on amitryptiline for my chronic pelvic pain a couple of years ago, and it definitely helped with sleep - I actually had to change when I took it as I was having full naps in the day when I was at university and needed to be working! The one thing I would say, because nobody told me, is that if and when you do come off it, make sure you wean yourself off gradually. I wasn't warned about this and I had the most terrible withdrawal symptoms, especially when I was falling asleep, such as auditory hallucinations and sleep paralysis. However, if I had come off gradually this would not have been a problem. I really hope you get some relief. I am inspired by how positive you are. Stay strong! You are loved. xx
+Rosalind Pearl Thank you so very much! :) And yikes, sorry you went through that! I really appreciate the warning! I have had experiences like that in the past that I would rather not repeat lol
it is nice to see you in PT
I was put on Amitriptyline when I was having trouble sleeping due to severe muscle spasm / joint pain and it definitely helped both with the pain and helping me to sleep- the only problem was that it worsened my fatigue so much that it caused me to sleep for around 18 hours per day. I physcially could not wake myself until late afternoon, sometimes evening :( I have ME / CFS though, and I do know others who have been able to take it without the same problem. My issue was that I didn't realise straight away that it was the meds, I thought I was just having an awful health crash. So if you do try it, just be super aware and cautious I'd say :) hope it goes well for you! I'm @cchelseathomson on insta btw, we chatted briefly before, I'm so glad to see you're keeping better after your latest surgery!
+Chelsea Thomson Hey girl! I remember you from instagram :) Thanks so much for the heads up! The last thing I want is to feel more groggy. I tend to be super sensitive to sedatives. Im glad to hear it did help a bit with pain though. Maybe if I decide to brave it I won't be as groggy. Reading all the responses is just making me really aware of how different we all react to things lol. Hope you are well!
I was on amitriptyline for around 9 months for migraines and depression (before I had pots), and it worked for my symptoms. I ended up switching to noritriptyline because of the sedative effect though - I absolutely could not get out of bed unless I had ~12 hrs sleep, but I already had fatigue due to other conditions so it probably exacerbated that. I wouldn't get tired right when it took it, it was more of a constant state of exhaustion.
+Emily Horton Good to know! I have a lot of fatigue issues too and the last thing I want is to feel groggy or drugged. I just need a little help to fall asleep
I use Amitriptylin for sleep and the neuropathic pain. I've tried so much in the past and I guess this is by far the best. I felt a little disoriented and fuzzy the first couple of days, but kinda managable. I'm about to increse with 10mg per week up to 75mg. So far, so good! I get alot more tired when I go to bed and no side effects the morning after. Hope it will work out for you ✨🌸
+Moa Jansson Great to know! Thank you so much! Its nice to know that I can maybe expect to feel a bit weird at first but that I may get used to it.
In the future, Amitryptiline is possibly something that could be added into my treatment. The neuropathic pain in my legs from spinal stenosis, migraines, IBS, & incontinence could all benefit. My only concern is that I have excessive daytime sleepiness -- so unless my sleeping at night is more restless than I realize & makes me sleepy all day, I don't think that would be a good side-effect for me! But I'd rather have one problem a little worse & a lot of problems a lot better, so... We'll see!! I'm glad you're feeling well enough to be tending to your crafting & art. We were missing a lot of that on your channel.
+ZijnShayatanica Its always so hard weighing the side effects and benefits. I can totally relate! I hope your knee is doing better, my PT did some shoulder magic for me today, thank goodness!
It feels so good to be getting back to art. Even if it isn't the elaborate things I want to be doing, its a start.
I used to take amitriptyline for stomach pain, it did help a little bit and also made me sleepy but I had side effects of panic attacks (never had before) and personality changes which were really scary even on the lowest dose. Switched to nortriptyline which worked much better and didn't have any bad side effects for me
Yikes! Sorry that happened to you! I will keep that in mind for sure
I was on Amitrptlyline for many years loved it worked well for me, have POTS, EDS, and TMJ. I only was taken off it do to other medications not do will together with "amtrp" so had to pick what was more important with my medical problems. And I started using new meds to take its place. Not as good but works with my other medications.
+Lunar Wolf Interesting! Glad to hear you had such a positive experience with it! 💜
Yes, I'm vary glad I did. Been worried with all the meds I take in a day. Hope things went well for you with it too.
i follow you on IG and just found your youtube! i watched your feeding tube video and it had sooo much good info😄 it was perfect timing because im getting my J-tube procedure today. thanks hun💕
+girlrecovering r Best of luck today! You will be in my thoughts and prayers!
Love your vlogs :) I am prescribed amitriptyline for my back issues and it does help me sleep. Since being diagnosed with POTS though my cardiologist thinks it could be playing a part in extra flare ups so I am going to be getting it reviewed by my GP xx
Hmm thanks! Great to know. My POTS is finally more stable so that makes me nervous. I will definitely check with my cardio
Yes that would be your best option lovely
"I'm just too popular" accurate

+Debbie Wyatt I was wondering when someone would notice! ❤️ Me too!
Woohoo I love the Winchesters, and I have eds too. Love your videos
Oh I'm on Etsy as well xx
Hiya! I'm super late to responding about amitriptyline (catching up on your videos) so sorry!
I was on a low dose a while back for my headaches and body pain (I also have EDS). I eventually switched off of it and onto nortriptyline, which - as you might guess or know - is also a tricyclic antidepressant and really effects the body the same way. The one difference is that it's "cleaner" than amitriptyline and generally causes less side effects. (It's interesting that amitriptyline is almost always prescribed before docs try another tricyclic because nortriptyline is honestly a better option in most regards. Amitriptyline is just kind of the "tried and true" tricyclic.)I have a unique situation wherein all my pains and discomforts are best medicated with sedating meds, but I'm super susceptible to drowsiness. I switched because I thought the amitriptyline was causing bouts of extreme fatigue, but I realized months later that it was actually an as-needed med that I'd been told didn't cause drowsiness but does!
All this to say: amitriptyline and nortriptyline both can help with sleep and I'm interested to hear how it's going for you! (I haven't seen an update on it in the videos I've watched, but I've still got a few more to go).
They both make me drowsy and I take my nortriptyline at night, tho I haven't found that the dose is high enough (I take 50mg a day for my headaches, pain, and depression - but started at 10 for just headaches) to actually put me to sleep anymore. At first, it did but as I got used to it, I found that I can stay awake after taking it...
Another important thing to mention (especially if you're like me and super sensitive to meds) is that tricyclics can have an energizing effect at their peak plasma level. For nortriptyline, that's 8 hours after taking it, so when I upped my dosage from 25mg to 50mg, I was waking up at like 4am panicked, mind racing, and unable to go back to sleep. At that point, we switched the meds to the morning, which was kind of awful. I didn't realize at the time because my depression was awful and the meds were helping, but we eventually got me back up to 50mg and comfortable enough to switch me back to nighttime and the difference in brain fog, alertness, etc. was seriously unreal. So I might suggest upping at very small increments and just being cognizant of plasma levels etc.
I'm an incredibly long-winded person, so I apologize. I hope you found something to glean in all this madness!
+Lilan This is all so so helpful and interesting! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to type all of that out for me. I was advised by another doctor to not make the switch until I can see my neurologist since I am on some other neurological meds and they were worried about interaction. So I have not tried it yet. I am still waiting for my neurologist appointment. I am going to absolutely make sure I ask about her opinion on the amitriptyline vs the nortriptyline ❤
I'm really glad to be helpful! Honestly. If it weren't for other chronically ill folks, I think we'd all be a whole lot worse off. It's crucial that we all communicate and support each other because, so often, it's the only way to really get the information we need and should be getting from doctors (if only there were more chronically ill and disabled doctors).
I totally get being concerned about drug interactions. It gets tricky! It's also why I use nortriptyline to manage multiple symptoms - I was previously on amitriptyline for headaches and pain but a separate antidepressant and that alone can be an issue cause of serotonin syndrome. It only gets more complicated with the more meds you add! I hope they find something to help you with sleep that helps more than it hinders or hurts!
I absolutely 100% agree!
I never had much of a good experience on amitriptyline, though I can't remember the effects because of really bad brain fog I was having at the time. It works great for my mum though, it probably just depends on the person.
Thanks so much for the input!
I LOOOOVE your vlogs!! I have EDS and all of the fun things that go with it, (I'm miss._.believer on insta ;) ) and I love having someone I can actually relate to, I love vloggers but everyone's life just makes me see everything I miss out on but having you reassures me in a way that this life is still a good life, you're so positive and you just give off such a great vibe :) looking forward to seeing the next video
oooh and I'm currently on amitryptiline at the moment, I think it kind of helps my pain but not really my sleep :/ I sleep through the night more often now where as I used to wake up 8-12 times through the night, Doesn't make me drowsy or fall asleep and easier but that very much could be isolated to me as I have had a lot of issues with drowsy meds not working XD Good luck! I hope you find it helpful
+Amber-PJ Thanks for telling me your experience with amitriptyline! I know what you mean, I can only watch so many Hawaii vacations ! ;)
Amitriptyline (one of the brand names was/is Elavil) is not a sedative. It is a tri-cyclic antidepressant which is the older class of antidepressant medications before the SSRI class arrived when Prozac hit the market. Elavil can be used for managing and preventing migraines, some have found it wonderful for neuropathic pain as a result of diabetes or nerve damage, for some it works for anxiety, as well as other things. For some people they work good at helping them sleep. Like any medication for some people it works great, for others it has side effects that they can handle, for others the side effects are too much, for others it is the worst medication they could take and everything in between.
However, if you are taking blood pressure or heart beat regulating medications, double check for any contraindications between those and the Elavil (amitriptyline) as some of those medications can not be taken with a tri-cyclic anti-depressant with issues ranging from mild problems to very severe problems. (This is true of all the classes of antidepressants. Some of the newer blood pressure meds for example become more highly concentrated in the blood when taken with an SSRI for example and as a result the patient can experience severe crashing of their blood pressure or extremely high pressure, either way its dangerous.)
Always speak to a pharmacist ( they know more about medications than many doctors as it is the main focus of their education) about any new medication and ask specifically about drug interactions and contraindications. Make sure the pharmacist is told about every medication you are taking, even over the counter stuff like vitamins, herbs, or cold medicines etc. So if you fill scripts at more than 1 pharmacy (lots of reasons this happens such as needing a compounded script or insurance requirements), bring a list of all your medications to the pharmacy where you're going to fill the new script, give it to the pharmacist along with the new script and ask them to check for any potential or known issues between those meds.
I know this is old but I figured it couldn't hurt to provide the basic information. I hope it helps someone out. You can find a whole lot of great information, including potential interactions, contraindications etc. on different medicines on the internet. It never hurts to look stuff up yourself, learn about it, then double check the information (as not everything on the net is 100% accurate) with a pharmacist.
I tried amitrptaline for my GI issues but It didn't help me much because it made my heart rate go to 150 sitting (when I was fully hydrated and no reason for a POTS flare) so we stopped that😂. love your videos!
+maura Grier Yikes! Thanks for the heads up! I will be careful
Great video, as usual! I took amitriptyline for a while to see if it would help my pain, and while it didn't do much in that area it really made me sleep better. It made me tired at night but still able to wake up in the morning. When I adjusted the dose I'd be excessively tired for a few days before going back to normal.
By the way, did you get your ring splints due to dislocations or just generalized hypermobility? I've never dislocated or even subluxated any of my finger joints, but my fingers get really tired when I'm using the computer or holding pencils and after a day in school my fingers are so painful that I can't even use my phone or hold my crutches properly. Do you think ring splints could help with that type of instability?
+Hilda Wallentin Thank you so much! It sounds like it could be exactly what I need after all.
I didn't really have a lot of dislocation in my fingers but I did have a lot of instability. Especially in my thumbs. I used the inside my my thumb knuckle for everything because I didn't have enough stability to use my fingertip. Now I can and its great. They help a lot with writing as well. I do think they are definitely worth it, even for people who don't dislocate often
you just laying down dislocating in your shoulder I do the same thing my shoulders pop in and out I had surgery on my right shoulder but it was unsuccessful I know I leave a lot of comments sorry LOL
Hi from the uk I take 5 amiltryptline and 2 zopiclone at night to sleep and it still doesn’t work.
nope nope not amitriptyline. causes constipation and makes pots type symptoms worse (cause postural hypotension) also didnt make me sleep.
+Eleanor Aquitaine Yikes! Good to know!
Christina Doherty Just to put another point across. I've been on amitripyline for years to help with neuropathic pain and to help me sleep and I've not had a single issue or side effect and I am a)allergic to lots of medications too and b) suffer with lots of side effects from medications but not this one. It may be worth a try?
you should sell your bath bombs
+ConversionDisorder I feel like Im not totally qualified for that. I think there are certain qualifications that body products need to have. Ill just enjoy mine and leave the selling to the professionals for now :)
Ok
