Thanks now I can walk around the house starting discussions with my parent's about how Julius Caesar must be stopped and make my dog a member of the Senate.
Maybe it's just me, but a toga seems like much more comfortable business/formal wear than a three piece suit or tuxedo. Romans also had a custom of taking baths (basically a spa trip nowadays) and played games like checkers or backgammon during their business meetings and political deals. Now compare this with golf. Which one sounds better?
Joe real toga can be quite heavy, because of the amount of material used. It was then replaced by pallium because it was too uncomfortable. That's just how clothing evolve: It started as simple, but the more formal it became, the more uncomfortable it is and finally replaced by something more comfortable. Modern suit was also like that. That's why it was originally called "lounge suit" ie suit for lounging.
I would prefer a toga with a tunic and shorts underneath it rather than a business suit. A toga may be sort of heavy, but it beats being constricted by a suit just to look nice.
I've started wearing clothing styled after ancient Rome and Greece and I've never been more comfortable, you get so much range of motion and because it's so airy you're not becoming mired in sweat. I also get the added benefit of looking down at the plebeians.
That toga falls beautifully. Most togas I've seen, look super awkward when warn. That one looks like the ones on statues and paintings from Rome's prime years.
@@ReasonableRadio Have y'all noticed the semi circular shape of the unwrapped toga? I'd like to know how to trace such a shape onto a massive rectangular piece of fabric.
@@emiledanielbouwer6963 you could get a diagram, measure it out on the piece of fabric and cut to marks. Wouldnt take too long probably though cutting skills and tools will differ
Is it just me, or do togas depicted in Roman artwork look kinda different from modern reconstructions of them, like in movies or this one here? In statues, togas look bigger and clunkier on their wearer and they have all sorts of complicated folds....
From its probable beginnings as a simple, practical work-garment, the toga became more voluminous, complex, and costly, increasingly unsuited to anything but formal and ceremonial use. It was and is considered ancient Rome's "national costume"; as such, it had great symbolic value; however even among Romans, it was hard to put on, uncomfortable and challenging to wear correctly, and never truly popular. When circumstances allowed, those otherwise entitled or obliged to wear it opted for more comfortable, casual garments. It gradually fell out of use, firstly among citizens of the lower class, then those of the middle class. Eventually, it was worn only by the highest classes for ceremonial occasions
I enjoyed the talk, but was quite disappointed that the demonstration was only the short-cut bed-sheet version which is already easy to find on line.I would think that that Getty would be the one source of something more historically correct.
+Leslie Yarmo Probably find some wool bedsheets or a blanket around the same size. Togas were made of wool, as it was the only fibrous material available to them.
You mention the Empire. Was this how a Roman Republican would drape his toga as well? I've seen a few paintings/mosaics that wrap around a couple more times but I've never been able to figure out how.
Is to be honest this toga is a bit short for this man and overall the toga looks like the 1st century BC toga rather is rather than a first century AD toga which was much larger
Jennifer Halliwell A toga is nothing more than a semicircular piece of fabric, so I'm sure you can purchase a large piece of fabric from any fabric store and cut it to size at home.
I was just going to say the same thing. For one thing its about 4 inches too low on his right side, its should be about belt level no lower. Remember Greeks wore JUST the Toga and this would have left him exposed. Most Romans (except Cato) wore a tunic under.
Jim Humphries isn't this traditionally a garment that only the men wore? What did women wear? I've been trying to research more about what women were wearing because from what I understand the toga was only worn by men
Not exactly the presentation one might expect from a museum of the Getty's stature. Why not have "the two slaves"? Why was your model in modern street garb and not in the Roman under tunic? I'm very sorry, but as a costume historian I found this a weak effort.
unknownally That's because this is teaching the historically accurate way to make a toga. Most other tutorials are more for looking pretty and could probably care less about historical accuracy.
Nice try, but if you want to see how to dress as a proper Roman, watch I, Claudius episodes here on RUclips. First episode, Marcus Agrippa in toga. Nice stolas too.
that was just wrong, wrong shape and you're supposed to loop the left corner back under the diagonal. if they wore it like this it would fall off every 5 minutes
I just uploaded a video... Idk maybe it might help? I don't cut or sew the toga, but if you are a guy the only thing I would do different is tie it with a chunky gold rope. =D
How come this toga doesn't actually look like any of the togas you see on Roman statues or paintings? It's because it is not properly draped. This woman, whoever she is, doesn't know what she's talking about. Read Lillian May Wilson, A Study of the Roman Toga, John Hopkins, 1924.
So maybe after a few more decades studying and teaching them at a tertiary level you might have learned a few things, rather than parroting what some academic you saw at a seminar said. There is a great deal of work currently being done on Roman material culture that is much more in depth and accurate than 'look at some fucking statues'. Learn some manners as well as some history.
Are you? To any of those? No? So I guess you're not working at the Getty after all? No? Second hand clue in outdated studies is not a clue at all. Learn some respect toward educational professionals, as well as some history and civility.

Ok Caligula
Antonio Rios Caligula: S-son...?
😁
Remember the tunic for under your armor 😆
I was thinking about how badass it would be to start wearing togas so I started researching them
Same
And then women asked why we think about the roman empire. This is exactly why lol
Thank you, my little sister is doing a “Walk Through Ancient Civilizations” and the Roman toga is what we were struggling with

walking and driving in a toga is very cumbersome. The toga also needs to be constantly re-adjusted.
Michael Panggabean Then the pallium was replaced by the tunic and chlamys I'm Byzantine times

i am in this and i don't like it

Never knew an upcoming toga party would lead me to find the funniest and most specific troll conversation in a comment section
That toga falls beautifully. Most togas I've seen, look super awkward when warn. That one looks like the ones on statues and paintings from Rome's prime years.
It’s all about the fabric! Cheaper fabric usually tends not to fall quite as well, and when you need 6 yards, a good toga can easily run over $100
This man took camp to a whole new level. Love it.
🤔..........
I would have liked if you guys showed how to actually cut and fold the toga - but still a good and informative video - thanks :)
my professor said I'd get extra credit if I wore a toga to the Roman republic midterm
I really want to know where I can buy an authentic toga.
seems like you can basically just get a couple yards of a fabric roll
Castus' Haberdashery 2nd floor at Trajan's Market next to Hercules' Ye Olde Greek Gyros. You can't miss it

Long side should measure 18 feet. The short side should measure 7 feet. Just draw a curve and cut!
in Libya some people still wear this type of clothing.

The gentlemen is looking really good in the toga.
Roman traditional dress look like Arab,Persia, Jewish, India , Buddha monk traditional dress

Absolutely! and the the tunics were made of linen - which were easily laundered!
thats not a bed sheet, see how its cut in a half circle shape? thats a wool toga
Leslie Yarmo i
can you use a toga as a travellers blanket?
They may have used linen or hemp in the warmer months, not as heavy and insulated
They used pins, usually decorative to secure the toga
Why not show the proper Toga being applied, as you did for the party Toga? Romans would wear a tunic under their Togas.
Imagine walking around Rome in the middle of summer wearing one of these 😮💨
Where can I get an toga like that?
How many yards is that toga?
how tall is this toga model?
You mention the Empire. Was this how a Roman Republican would drape his toga as well? I've seen a few paintings/mosaics that wrap around a couple more times but I've never been able to figure out how.

Kuba, for the first KGB vid, we need you dressed in a toga , cooking kuban food.
You can make a toga with a bedsheet,
Where can I buy one or have one custom made????

Who would've thought the romans and greeks fancied ancient african clothing too. Proud africans are still rocking this today.
Great video!

@@ChromeMan04 Yeah ffs. They claim they invented everything but they can't even support themselves in 2020
Thank you for giving me extra credit
thanks now i can be the one member of the senate emperor commodus picked on constantly and threw into a pool in full toga
Yes this is the historically accurate shape for the cloth of the toga but, the way they have wrapped it around the man is not correct.
I was just going to say the same thing. For one thing its about 4 inches too low on his right side, its should be about belt level no lower. Remember Greeks wore JUST the Toga and this would have left him exposed. Most Romans (except Cato) wore a tunic under.

Roman women woe a stola over a tunic. Think Statue of Liberty. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stola)

Thank you. I wanted the historically accurate way.
Same here! I was confused for a bit too and so I did a little extra research and quickly found that this is authentic. :)
I bet that guy went to high school with Shelby. He seemed to act a little goofy like he was roped into something
Shelby Brown has such a pleasant voice...
Oh I thought you would demonstrate the full toga drape from the beginning, not just the reverse!!!!
Not interested in the ineffectual sheet🤨

You're wearing it like a shawl... so they were naked the rest of the time?
