How To Identify Male And Female Pearl Gourami
    1.Body Color
You can readily identify male pearl gouramis by their coloration. Males are always more colorful than their female counterparts.
Males pearl gouramis in breeding condition develop a splash of a stunning red or orange color on their throats to attract mates.
    2. Finage
You can also tell a male pearl gourami from a female by the shape of their fins.
The dorsal fin of the males have a more angular and pointed shape.
while the female dorsal fin have short and rounded.
    3.Body Shape
You can usually see this difference best when viewing the side of the fish.
In general, male pearl gouramis have slimmer and more angular bodies than the females, which are usually more rounded.
Females have a rounded belly and heavyset bodies compared to the males specially when they are carrying eggs.
    4.Behavior
You can easily tell your fishes' sex by their behavior.Males tend to be more aggressive than females.
However, males may occasionally chase other fish around the aquarium. In particular, males may fight amongst themselves.
    5.Bubble nest
When these fish decide to breed, males will construct nests made out of bubbles and plant bits. Only the males of the species do this. So if you see a fish blowing bubbles into the corner of your aquarium, you know it's a male.

I've found with with mine adding more schooling smaller fish helped them come out more and be less shy under the idea there are more smaller fish they're more likely to be eaten by a predator mentality. I have a rather larger tank at 180 and slowly add more celestial pearl diano's weekly I'm currently at around 60 of them with 5 pearl gourami, 3 red whiptail catfish, and 100 or so assorted shrimp from cherry, black crystals, red crystals, blue pandas. My gourami occasionally get spooked and hide behind my hardscape or plants but more times than not they are happily mid to top of my tank. I'd just try adding more smaller fish.
