Both my late husband and I were his biggest fans. My husband never got over his envy that I’d saw him live in concert🥹He was magic, sounding as good live as on my vinyl. That night he also sang a bit of opera! What a voice he had❤️🌹
Al Kooper sang lead for the BST version of Just One Smile. He was also a friend of Gene Pitney from their song writing days writing for the same publisher.
Lost my wife last year and although neither of us were old enough to remember gene as both in our forties we "discovered" his music about ten years ago. This song could not sum up my feelings any better.......
I'm very sorry for your loss hon,I'm 60 and I was introduced to his music from my older sister whom is 74,she has a trained beautiful voice and she used to sing his songs to me while rocking me in her rocking chair, may the angels sing this song to you and bring you peace, you might like Goo rest high on that mountain by Vince Gill, sending you light and prayers ❤️
Having lost my wife to cancer, this song hits straight into my heart. Thank you, Gene. It was a distinct pleasure and a blessing to listen to your music growing up.
I am in my 70's and whenever I hear "Just one smile " I am back at my old dance hall in Carluke reliving my teenage years all over again.Lovely memories and a fantastic singer .R.I.P Gene X
I was so fortunate to grow up with 5 brothers who knew what great music was! I've lost 3 of them, but there were certain artists that they all agreed on, Gene was definitely one of them, such special memories, thanks bros!💕
Just a guess... Roy Orbison? Del Shannon? Everly Brothers? I may be of that era, enjoy your brothers' choices and relish the memories. I'm astonished how much I can find on RUclips -- thanks to its posters I can re-visit my life!
I have a brother five years older than me, and I liked and learned a lot of his music as well as mine. My brother is 79 and I'm 74 and we are just as close as ever.
Hello, yes, I am old and this was my era so I wanted to tell you as being a young man age 19, I am proud of you! A young man that understands the beauty of this music in today's age is someone to be proud of. In other words, it does my heart good knowing a man your age is deep enough to listen to this vintage music. Keep on listening my friend!
I got to know Gene in the early 60's through work, and he was the nicest, kindest, friendliest, funniest guy ever, and amazingly, we met up again 30 years later! Broke my heart when i heard of his death. But his music lives on!
I had the album this song first appeared on many years ago. The lyrics attract me now more than they did then. This song was much more than simple rock and roll tune. I still enjoy the "soaring" vocal chorus/ refrain that Pitney employed compared to others who have done covers. I also like Dusty Springfield's version because, well, it is Dusty. I am no musician; I just know what I like and I like this song.
Powerful Gene. Great Gene. Hit the greatest note in pop history with I'm gonna be strong. Multi - faceted artist. Unique greatness for the one and only Gene Pitney.
OMG!! How right you are! When that song came on the car radio, my friends would pull over, stop the car and listen to me try to match that song and hit that note! I could hit it - but mostly ran out of breath before he finished. Wonderful song.
Yes Gene hit top notes but also poured out emotion, the message in the lyric was always his priority. So many hits and album tracks - what I'd give to re-visit those years and see him onstage again in England! But I'm grateful to RUclips for keeping my memories alive.
Heard/read that everyone in the studio...producers, musicians alike, their jaws dropped when Pitney hit that note. NEVER had heard anything like it before. Have a feeling there was only ONE take of that song.
A quite extraordinary voice. No synthesizer, no electronics. A snare drum, acoustic guitar and x3 violins. Aside of the backing singers that was it. His control and interpretation were immense literally pulling you into the pool of the emotion he is creating through the song. Goodness it would bring a tear to a glass eye. Quite brilliant and sadly we shall not hear his like again.
This beautiful man could sing any song , his voice was truly unforgettable. My mom would forever play 24 hours from tulsa , on our old record player. All day long..😊
It is so amazing that this song never reached higher in the charts than it did. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Pitney was so underrated and will always be one of my favorites......
What a wonderful song. GENE PITNEY is a fantastic singer. I enjoyed him as a teenager and throughout my life. So sorry I was not able to see him perform live in Las Vegas. He died shortly thereafter. Thank goodness for record albums and RUclips. His great voice and music lives on.
Glad somebody else knew this :-) .... I'm a big Randy fan, and this was a very early cut for him. I didnt know til today BS &T did this on their first LP as well.
My favorite GP song of all time. Told him so. We (his fans) begged him to include it in his concerts around 1998-1999, and eventually he did. Haunting melody, Randy Newman knows how to write 'em. And Gene, well.. Gene squeezes all the emotion into this one -- just short of breaking out crying! Gene could do that. I was in Australia the day he died -- the radio stations there played Gene all day, and I listened on the ADF as I flew the 747 out of SYD. - Captain Dan
I just want to stay and listen to this record over and over again lie here and die to it, its so emotionally explosive and fills all the needs of the people back then like myself and still as true today. the greatest loss to the music scene GENE you were a brilliant star and still are in my eyes. R.I.P.

thankful for living in that particular era that was absolutely redolent with such songs as this. Is there anything musically now, which comes close to that era ?
my mam and me went to see him in 1998/99 when he did a tour of the uk. I just love his songs!! I wasn't even born when his songs were in the charts..his music is liked by all ages.
I used to listen to all Gene's Musicor records in Sydney Bron music in the early 60's before he was known in Britain .. I realised then how tasteful he was, due no doubt, to Aaron Schroeder our American connection and his wonderful collection of great songwriters . I met Gene on his first visit to London.
I tried this song and recorded it, played it to Gerry Bron 30 years later and received a positive response. Not better than Pitney's tho' .. I was the only person listening to Gene other than Loog Oldham and Keith Richards in those days. 1962 .. thrilling!
Gene's voice was so rich in emotional tones... always writing or choosing unique lyrics... "...whenever we hear superb music we must listen; then we will forget all inferior music." ~ Baha'i Faith
Gene died in Cardiff, Wales after a concert. The fastest way to get from Tulsa to Cardiff takes twenty four hours, think on that, he actually died Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa. One of my all time favourite singers.

If anyone knows this great tune, it's probably because it's on "Dusty In Memphis," but I remember hearing Gene's fantastic version of this Randy Newman song on the radio back in my all-time favorite "radio" year, 1965, and couldn't believe it didn't even make the Top 50 in the USA, let alone the Top 10 where it should have been. Gene should have had a #1 the next year with "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" as well. And I think that Wikipedia needs to add a "Gene Pitney Discography" instead of just a cursory run-through in his biography. Hey, Bobby Goldsboro has a "discography" and as much as I like his stuff (up until the execrable "Honey" of course), Bobby Goldsboro is DEFINITELY no Gene Pitney!
One of the greatest singers ever for my money. Very distinctive voice. Had the good fortune to see Gene in concert in Nottingham on one occasion. Vastly underrated entertainer sorely missed.
Nobody ever sang or will sing again like this guy. Always found his delivery a little comical in places (fun to imitate), but always very engaging. Great songwriting here, as with many of Gene Pitney's songs.
Been in love with the man whose voice comes from another galaxy of peace and sensitivity, benevolence since his duo with beloved Mark Almond. Allright. Not my type of music originally but so moving. Frank Sinatra is definitively OVERRATED. RIP PETE

Gene died far to soon. He is much missed in the uk. One of the greatest singers of all time. America was lucky to have him as one of their sons.
Gene Pitney had one of the great voices of all time! Sorry that he passed on.
Gene’s voice gives you chills. There will never be anyone like him...just listen to his voice on this song.
Having lost my wife to cancer, this song hits straight into my heart. Thank you, Gene. It was a distinct pleasure and a blessing to listen to your music growing up.
