Looks cool but I don’t pay money for unfinished games anymore.

For me, the exploration is the best part of this game so far. I was not expecting it to be so in depth.

"Odd proportions aside..."
That's a generous way to put it. First game I know of that lets us play as the cousin of Quasimodo of Notre Dame. Still, I like the art-style.
yeah, for i never liked that soulslike = Ugly people in a ugly world full of terrible things...
But thats also why i buy hogwarts legacy and none of those games :P
People there are almost built like Warhammer orcs. Though NPCs in cutscenes seem to be less extremely proportioned.
@@Shadowclaw25found the blood elf player
You play as a dwarf in this game?
@@chrismccoy1947 hehehe , sure ya did :D
Thank you Mort for the consistent uploads and exposure to new games.
This game looks sick!
This is from the developers of Ori, those games hold a special place in my heart. So I will buy this and anything else they develop but not in early access. Great video as always.
I’m so excited for this game. It really does look amazing. I don’t do early access stuff anymore so I’ll wait for the proper release.
Already 10hours into the game, and I love it.
If u reach the city then everything opens up. Weapon crafting/customizing with the runes and infuse, building crafting your home/the city. I was actually surprised how many things there are to do.
About the crashes, ran the intro also twice, but since I upgraded all my drivers no crashes so far.
Just bought the house! About 10 hours in as well. Loving it so far and was surprised by the amount of content
Wow, I haven't had a single crash in 9hours so far. That's interesteing!
I’m running hella smooth too with a 4070ti
4080, 1 crash. The fps however....down to the 30-40s in town and some other places, while 80-100 everywhere else. It needs work.
3080. Zero crashes. Running really well for the most part. Lowest fps I got was 45 in a couple areas but typically I'm getting 60-80. I dont know Mortismals pc specs but I've heard some talk performance issues may be for more AMD cards
2080ti, 20 hours in, no crashes atm, but the performance is really bad, hope they focus on that optimization...
Was looking forward to you getting hands on this one! Thanks for the preview!!
Thanks, as always fair and transparent👍
Great artstyle, fantastic atmosphere, phenomenal voice acting for every single character, engaging exploration (rewards backtracking because there's so much you can miss/discover on repeat visits), promising story.
Some things are annoying, like the durability system, but that's mainly a problem very early on. I'm super excited for the addition of coop, which will probably make the punishing combat a bit more forgiving and the grind for resources (to upgrade the town) more fun.
I'm 17 hours into it now with a mage character, feel free to ask questions.
I played a few bosses and gotta say they are atleast on a fromsoftware level imo. What do you think? Pls no spoilers, just opinion. They are so fking good.
@@terminator6431 it definitely felt like fighting souls bosses. Memorizing patterns, punishing openings, blocking out all distractions to just focus on the enemy's movements... (Dying a lot xD)
Although difficult, the boss fights never felt unfair and had manageable complexity. I also like their visual and narrative presentation.
What I struggle with the most right now are enemy groups and big enemies who can reach extremely far with their attacks. Those feel more frustrating than the actual bosses xD
@@Stefan-xt5sk true. I mean some bosses had insane range too but you knew he would do that attack bc you are too far away and it would be a special sound/movement then the other attacks, making it very fun and fair to play against.
I think the resource gathering and inventory management are the most punishing mechanics of the game at the moment. Difficulty seems to be on par with Souls games in early levels. But once you get to the city and have access to weapon/armor upgrades the game becomes too easy imo.
They either need to tune down the difficulty in early levels so the whole game is more accessible to everyone, or turn up the difficulty significantly after Sacra so that it's consistent for people who want a Souls-like challenge.
Thanks for another great video! Definitely excited for this one, the art style and gameplay look amazing, but going to hold off until the official release so they hopefully fix the issues raised
The animation looks like cool. To be expected coming from the studio that created Ori though.
Thanks for the video on this one Mort! I’ll definitely keep an eye on this one as it goes through EA before deciding whether or not to purchase
Awesome Vid!
Thank You very much for Your Work! Greetings from Germany
Your channel is my go to place for any early access game opinion.
As usual I can always depend on ya to help me decide try it or wait. Thanks again
Thanks for the preview.
I have been really excited for this game since I learned about it 1 month ago. First game I have bought day of release in many years. After about 1 hour of play time I am very happy with it. I like the slow pacing, I like the art style, I like the difficulty. I am sure some issues will show through with more play time. But I am happy for now. 20% discount on release is a nice touch for early adopters. Cant wait to see how it develops till 1.0
Funnily enough, the Digital Foundry video on this game showed that the performance issues seem to be prevalent on powerful machines, while mid and low-end machines run pretty well.
My laptop is pretty mid, but it can run the game pretty well. Only few hiccups that's expected from an early access game.
I can second that. I’m not an overly picky gamer when it comes to performance and resolution (I understand if you are) and the game runs good (not perfect)on my RTX 3070 Legion gaming laptop (2022) with quality settings in the resolution that the game picked. It is also playable on my Steamdeck (30 FPS though).
Yeah this sounds right. I have a 4090 and a 7950x with 64GB or RAM, and can’t get beyond 50 or 60fps with drops to half that frequently. I haven’t had the crashes Mort mentions though.
RTX 2070, i5 9600K @4.3GHz, 16GB RAM, and I get around 25-40fps most of the time.. it's especially bad in the city
@@toorealforlife8139 4090, 7700x 32G Ram, 3440x1440 and I'm never below 100 fps with maximum quality. Although im only 2 hours in so far. Is the performance bad for you all around or in specific areas ?
I played for a little over five hours so far and I agree with your assessment about the game overall and it is stunning. One thing to note is that I think the item durability is actually specifically a punishment for dying. I didn’t notice any item degradation on use. It was only when I died that I had to repair I think.
Like Diablo 4 then, where all your items lose 10% of their durability upon dying.
@@Nazgul094 It seems like it yes. The problem I have with it in the early game is the repair cost feels really steep. This is a souls like with packs of enemies that combo while you are sucking on no stamina. So, you WILL die. These costs should be minimal.
@@abraxis59 The cost is 0 early game.
My sword once broke in the middle of a fight against a boss enemy. Deaths are definitely the biggest factor, but there seems to be some wear from just using them.
@@abraxis59 All that junk gear, is for selling or rune extracting, you get such a massive surplus of gold so fast. Don't be a hoarder.
Really excited for this one once it leaves early access. Completed Ori and the will of the wisps just recently and it was a blast
Great informative video as always. Went to check this out on the steam store and whoof...that 40$ price tag for Early Access....
It's currently on a 10% sale brining it down to 36, so I'll wait on this one...
Great vid as usual!
Ill be keeping an eye out on this one even if the initial reception appears very mixed
Love the art style.
Its hard to be excited knowing this is going to be in EA for at least 2-3 years. Looks gorgeous tho.
That's a long time, did the dev state that?
@@renatoszfr no
Do you have a source on that
@@GodofChookieI could be wrong and 2-3 years isn't uncommon for early access. If you read what the devs have to say on the steam page, they give the impression that 1.0 is a long ways off. Their "road map" doesn't even say much and isn't very specific either.
Even if it is 4 years out it's worth it. This game is amazing and should take as long as needed to bake in the oven. I'm happy for early access, the community gets a voice this way.
Ive had my eye on this game for a while. Definitely seems worth picking up sometime later.
My main gripe with the game so far is healing. I get that having it be a somewhat finite resource is a design choice, but it can be quite a chore to abandon whatever you're doing because you need to go out and look for more food.
It's fine if they don't give us recharchable healing items like flasks from Dark Souls/Elden Ring, but I wish that Cerim whispers or campfires regenerated your HP at least.
Bloodborne blood vials all over again 🙄
Yeah, that genuinely might be a dealbreaker for me. It’s just not a fun approach in games where you die a lot.
thought the same at first, then i enhanced my daggers and they got 3% of HP regen on hit. Meaning i almost never used healing items, unless i was close to 0HP. I think a lot of the later game actually comes down to buffs on gear, it seems to make a world of difference.
There is an accessory you can get that lowers your max hp but you get 2% of your max HP back per hit. Which can add up quick and has saved me sooooo many healing items.
@@superkatten999 Yeah, I've played a bit more, finished the prologue, etc.
Now I think healing is honestly good enough, there's plenty of food everywhere. Now I'm more annoyed by the lack of various quality of life features. You can't use crafting resources from your stash, items break pretty quickly (especially if you're dying), I'm not sure I like the whole "gather resources for building projects" thing. And the player housing. There's also daily and weekly quests. Quite a lot of time is spent just running around in general.
It's pretty obvious the developers are gearing the game towards multiplayer, and that's fine, but I think it could become an amazing gem if they prioritized the single player experience and then added some multiplayer functions on top of that.
I had my first crash after 10 hours and it was during a fight where I was against 3 enemies. I don't mind the durability mechanic and overall I have really been enjoying it. Sword and Board for me - although I suck at getting my shield parries timed right.
I rarely buy early access, but this game is an exception. Isometric souls-like was a hole in my life that desperately needed filling, and the art style is just plain gorgeous.
I'm playing on Steam Deck, where unfortunately the performance issues really show, but hey, ironing out that kind of stuff is what early access is for. I'm very bullish on this one.
My main criticism (other than performance) is that the game is a bit too zoomed in. I'd love to use the stealth more, but with the short visual range, it's hard to spot enemies before they spot me.
If your talking gameplay, there are a tone you have been missing
Is it worth playing on steam deck?
@@teeman7137 like ?
I'm tempted to give this one a chance too. An "ARPG" that's methodical and weighty is exactly what the genre needs to give us a respite from the typical mindless *Look, this spell with this talent and gear makes the whole screen explode!*.
@@Bloodbornepro. Honestly, it's borderline right now.
Performance is fine in some areas, but dips into low 20s in others. And with severe visual compromises (dynamic resolution).
Also had a few crashes that forced me to reboot my Deck. Usually I have maybe 1-2 of those every 1-2 weeks of using my Deck, but I've had 3 today from this game alone.
When it works and performs well, it's really fun, and I think this will be an amazing game when it's done cooking. I'm happy I bought it because my purchase helps fund the development (the idea of Early Access). But I see it more as a long-term investment for now and I'll probably not put too much time into it before they push out a few patches.
I had questions… you answered said questions😎
6:05 Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking before you even mentioned it, just from watching this footage. As soon as the swords start clashing the game seems to become an almost incomprehensible blur. I like the game's graphical style, but in a game like this reading the situation is so important. I honestly thought some of the combat footage was a bit hard to watch, it just looks so messy in action. Maybe it'll be better when it's on my own monitor, but it still feels like something that needs to be worked on.
Thanks! I’ll wait
I saw the art style, I tried the gameplay and I love it, I will play it fully when it comes out and hope my purchase will support the devs to make their vision come true.
From what I've seen and heard, apart from optomization biggest problems are:jumping tied to the same button as rolling and such making people jump to their deaths, breakable equipment that you cannot fix unless backtracking alot on foot. Some fast travel and QOL is needed
There's actually a spell you can buy from the enchanter and insert into a weapon, which lets you repair all items in your inventory fully for 150 focus points. If you're going for a mage or otherwise rune focused build that's a tiny investment, if not it requires a few levels to get to. you can also teleport to town from any cerim whisper and then back. In my experience having played 16 hours, making repair trips is a matter of a few seconds in most cases.
I like this. Thank you
I love this game so far! Definitely feels sluggish. Very laggy. I went with a with a dex-based build, and like you said, it feels both fast and slow at the same time.
I haven't played a worthwhile game in a while since Tunic (even BG3 did something that had me stop playing after the first act), and this game fits that itch. It's exactly what I needed after 2 years of waiting for something good!
I think I actually got this recommendation from you when you said "look at No Rest of the Wicked" before it came out.
Keyword is definitely potential... It has some good building blocks for them to make something absolutely fantastic.
Thanks for making this video, I found it super helpful. Been pretty intrigued by this game, but it's a little bit offputting that a studio of this pedigree would release a (somewhat pricey) EA version before addressing some pretty fundamental issues like keybinding. Of all the features a developer has to... develop, keybinding seems like probably one of the easiest things to include. Most of the other flaws seem like something that can be ironed out during this EA phase besides boosting how telegraphed enemy's attacks are - I mean we're talking probably dozens upon dozens of enemy types and animations that would have to be reworked, and I can think of absolutely zero solutions to enemy wind-ups/telegraphs being occluded by set pieces in the environment as seen in this video. I REALLY hope they listen to players about the pointless tedium of the item durability system instead of forcing it on us the way FROM does with some of its more eccentric design choices, because as awesome as Moon's games are, they are not FROM.
Completed a couple playthroughs now (not hard to do since there's only 2 mandatory bosses). I didn't have that many performance issues and no crashes, however my brother that I bought the game for has not been able to launch the game without it immediately crashing.
Issues aside, what's here in the core gameplay is fantastic. So many well made systems that put a twist on things we're familiar with. Heavy armor fat roll? Still useful because you can bash people. White, blue, purple loot colors? Every color has it's use, white being the most customizable, and purple potentially having the best traits but at the cost of a negative one. Ash of War like system where you can remove abilities from a weapon and place it on another. Allowing you to really customize your build how you want it.
I can go on but overall it's a really solid game. Likely to be my goty assuming they fix the performance/crash issues in the short term and release another act before the end of the year.
I really enjoy the art.
Man, my hype for this immediately dropped when i learned about the durability system
Good show sir
Thank you....I am getting used to depending on you to tell me the straight story on new games.
I was watching Tangent play on twitch. he was struggling to enjoy it. durability loss. farming materials to create healing potions as opposed to estus flasks/poe flasks. limited inventory space in a soulslike with crafting. he didn't find where to store materials either for quite a while. dur loss+having to go back home to repair.
odd proportions is due to top down isometric. vrising does it as well. its so your attack animations are clearly readable from the top down. path of exile also actually does it too. but its not as noticeable most of the time. except templar neck, etc.
I won't touch something before full release (and oftentimes not even for months after while kinks are ironed out)
But this is very much on my radar for when it finally is done
God damn, the animation work is stellar. That alone practically sells me on the game...
The artstyle is phenomenal. If the devs resolve issues this game has and improve some of the systems, I'll be very interested.
I'm interested in this, and have it Wishlisted. That said, I think I'll wait until after Early Access is over (or at least, much farther along) - I've got plenty of games to play currently, and haven't had the best luck with buying Early Access titles. I look forward to a full review :)
I'm keeping a close eye on this. One of my major issues with souls games is the camera. So many times when I'm attacking really large bosses, I have no idea what attacks or animations they are doing while I'm hitting their legs. Even if this game is on the harder side, I hope I'll be able to see all enemy animations.
it's a platform (hack and slash rpg like diablo 1 and 2) camera movement, it only had one position and you got no comtrol of the camera. very different in a dark soul like games.
Main character looks like Mr Hyde from that League of Extraordinary Gentleman movie lmao
Still excited about the game, but glad indeed that I didn't pick it up yet. Good overview.
I think it's one to wishlist until the full release.
I was watching a little of this and I couldn't notice any visual language that communicated which enemy attacks could be parried and which could not. I could see Moon Studios playing around with the color of the HUD to make the stamina ring stick out more, but something tells me they aren't as willing to make the garishly clear visual cues that ,say, Team Ninja would be for parry windows.
It looks promising though. I'll probably check it out once it gets a full release.
I didn't have any crashes and I use a very low-end PC for nowadays. What I have to do was to limit the FPS to 30 and chose the option exclusive fullscreen for the video. Also, I chose the performance preset. Then, I was able to play the game decently. Regarding to the key mapping, to be able to play well with a mouse and keyboard is necessary to switch to the alternative mode. In this mode the mouse pointer is the guide for the movement and it's a lot easier to use the shift and ctrl keys. I do CGI work, then I used Unity for a time and now I'm using Unreal Engine. I usually had performance problems and crashes using these applications and games. After I changed my Nvidia configuration by disabling the vertical sync and setting up the TdrDelay to 60 in the Regedit, I've never again had any problems using Unreal Engine or with games crashing. A lot of crashes are related to the vertical sync option.
Been playing it for a few hours and it's pretty good, the art style is super cool, has an Arcane(tv show)/Dishonored vibe.
Spent some time playing it last night. Pretty good overall. Sometimes the parrying feels impossible because of how sluggish some of the attacks are, and the camera leaves a lot to be desired sometimes when you’re moving around the environment….often found myself falling and dying because of camera jank. Promising game overall.
Love the game.Have been playing on steam deck.Amazing combat and graphics
What's the framerate like on the Steam Deck?
@@strider775 It goes between 20 fps to 40 fps.During cutscenes dropped to 20 fps even got steam deck froozen and got restarted hope it's addresed by dev
performance is really good for me and no crashes. only thing i'm not a big fan of atm is that there is no way to change keybindings. really, really great game so far (3 hours in)
The art style and world really appeals to me, I hope they're able to iron out the small annoyances since it looks like it has the potential to be a great game!
Best reviewer in the game. Doesn't downplay the problems without killing the hype.
I have been playing it game is great
I had a fair amount of stuttering but otherwise no issues in the 3 hours i spent with it.
Some framerate issues in cutscenes
Mort, do they have the option to turn that screen shake off on every hit?
I’m really enjoying it
Thanks.
I'm running an I9 3070 and I've had no crashes and no real problems with fps. It tanks sometimes if I jump around the city but I've played ten hours and never had a problem in combat. The quality/fidelity doesn't make a huge difference like PS5 exclusives e.g. Rebirth looks like absolute crap at 60 fps. This game looks great all the time, so just take it down from high quality and you won't notice much if any difference.
This game bangs hard. Not as tough as Elden Ring, but still a challenge, but much easier to cheese bosses with consumables if you're struggling. You can literally kill the first boss by just buying bombs. The real fun is how you can customize your gear. I've got a flame build going, medium where I took a ruin from a hammer that makes it so I can throw my weapon on fire, pretty cool. The game really opens up in terms of builds after the first boss.
A note on durability. Your weapons and armor don't degrade with use, just your tools. Your gear only degrades on death. So basically the game mechanic is that death costs you money and not experience like "souls." As long as you repair your tools in town regularly it's not that annoying. They just wanted a penalty for dying.
I think the biggest problems right now are the intentional time wasting parts that slow the game down. Just give the option to craft from chest. The inventory cap is tedious. Fast traveling is kinda tedious. And while I like the RNG loot, it probably needed some RNG mitigation. I chose dex first off and all I've come across is strength stuff.
No review has mentiond this but unarmed back stab is a suplex 10/10 game
I played it for 3 hours so far. I think it takes time for the player to get used to the combat, it will take time for the developers to flesh things out properly.
But the core gameplay feels pretty good, I am very optimistic for the future. It can turn out to be a gem of a game.
Having watched various videos and streams, it's obvious to me Moon Studio made another game I would absolutely love to play but physically can't because my reaction timing isn't good enough. I loved the look of the Ori games, got the first one and had to return it because I just couldn't time the platforming elements correctly. :(
Im looking forward to V Rising. Reminds of Kain in Blood Omen. (Prequel to Soul Reaver)
What kind of mic do you use for post recording?
Shure SM7B
Unless it's Klei or Supergiant, I don't opt into Early Access anymore. But this seems interesting to follow until release.
just love it! but as you said its early access so ye a few buggy elements.. but just in the first few weeks theres been alot improvements with the technical issues so the stutters and other issues isnt as bad... as a game i see a bright future if the developer do what they promise!!! havent had this much fun with a game for along time.
Any plans to make a quick video on the latest DLC for Wartales? Always enjoy hearing your take on games/DLC!
No current plans, I'm pretty bogged down at the moment, I picked it up but I probably wont be able to play it for a couple weeks
Looks like it will be a great steam deck game once its out of early access.
I tried it out and returned it. The mouse and keyboard controls are really bad and felt bad and I don't want to use a controller.
currently having constant crashes. my setup isn’t weak either:
4070 and a Ryzen 5 but it’s virtually unplayable for me with crashes.
Once is available on consoles i will 😅
Thanks for the video, although honestly I'll probably just check back later in a few months, I generally don't buy EA games on launch.
5:08 What is that character wearing? Did he escape from the stocks?
Does it have stat requirement for weapons? I have started too hate that after so many souls games.
Yeah
Thanks for this! I will never understand why durability is used in games, except in niche scenarios. If I wanted realism, I'd just not play video games.
Does the game seem to have a good balance of difficulty so far?
How is the RP in this ARPG?
There aint no rest for the wicked, money dont grow on trees🎶🕺🏼🎵🎶
5:20 Team Wicked is blasting off again
Press L3 for dev teleport they left in.
Oops forgot to finish watching the Morrowwind review
to me personally i never felt that the combat was slow... i felt it was just right to get a feel for the weighty and punchy combat this game is trying to create... also fortunately i haven't experienced any performance issues or bugs so far
I decided to use the two hour limit on steam to see if I liked it and ended up playing for 6 hours straight 😂
I'm still on the fence with it cuz of the mixed reviews.
4:44 could we end this creti...s idea in films & games alike that 2 handed swords were crude, heavy and slow/unwieldy to use?
This title scratched an itch I didn't know I had. It's so dense with routes to discover and encounters to find. Even unfinished, I'd pay a premium for this, and that was before I fixed my performance issues.
On the topic of weighty combat, there are lighter weapons, combined with a light equip load, you can zip around. And since you can backstab some enemies in combat, going low armor is definitely viable. For heavy weapons, though, you want to tank and spank, and it will be a slower experience. Stamina issues can be alleviated with enchanted gear.
Durability hits are basically just a gold sink consequence for repeated deaths. Enemies don't respawn on death, nor do you lose exp, and I'm assuming it exists for there to be something to be concerned about. Other than having a minor set back.
Appreciate these insights - knowing that you don't lose exp on death makes the durability loss a little more tolerable
I was very much looking forward to this, hoping it would be in a same kind of vain as seven days long gone. But the worst complaint i seem to see and feel is that.. it's just not that fun. It's visually striking, but i'd rather have a buggy mess that's enjoyable then a pretty empty plate.
"Oh let's just add a green stamina bar that will be perfectly visible on grass!" :D However, I'm sure they'll fix this.
I loved (and hated) the Ori games, so my hopes are high :)
This looks amazing and the ori games were outstanding however… I don’t buy unfinished games anymore.
Looks really good however Ill wait until its finished. Needs a lot more time in the oven.
