Hey, that's right in the time when I worked the engine room on GW. During work-ups in late 1993, we had an idiot LCDR who was standing EOOW. During flight ops, we had a very minor reactor plant casualty, the EOOW ordered the wrong corrective actions, and it caused both reactors to shut down. We went dead-in-the-water, planes already airborne had to divert to Oceana, and we had a 4-star admiral aboard who was PISSED. Our ship got a standing order to not let him stand EOOW anymore and his career was in the doghouse after that. He was dreaming of being a ship captain and he wound up getting out without even making CDR. I think it's funny (funny what happened to him, the interruption of ops was not funny), that guy was an asshole.

Ill agree, except for that last bit. With todays tech the pilot can be more of a pilot, and the plane can be more of a plane. Exciting. My division launched and caught aircraft on the carrier Lexington. Became an airline Captain but the excitement and focus required on the carrier's flight deck was great. Every American should experience some military duty.

I did 2 cruises with Connie (cv-64) V1 division. Nothing beats the tomcat. The noise was always distinct. Completely different from the rest of them. Love to see afterburners at dusk!
Incredible aircraft. Amazing turning ability with the movable wings. These are huge fighters and to see one with wings extended flying side ways turning is just plain awesome.
Even if top gun was never a movie the aviation nerd in me would still think the tomcat is one of the coolest fighters ever to be produced. Sometimes I wonder what it’d be like if they remade it with stealth design, panels, and angles.
These are magnificent machines. I got to see them up close aboard USS Kitty Hawk when she visited Sydney about 20 years ago. Back when the world made sense.
Notice that only the 3rd Tomcat lit his afterburners, and only after clearing the ship, and only briefly. Those F110-GE-400's were far superior in every way to the original TF-30's. :-)
Yes they where but I will always love the look and the sound of the tf30s although they where more responsible for more deaths of the crews then enemy’s them selfs
It wasn't that the TF30 was a bad engine it's that the Tomcat wasn't designed to work well with it and the bad intake design would create compressor stalls consistantly
I was a cook on the America in '86 when we blasted Libya! Whenever I had time off, I would just hang out on "Vulture's Row" for hours and watch those boys on deck do one of the "most dangerous" jobs on earth!!
I was lucky enough to see an actual "LAUNCH THE ALERT FIVE" on Connie back about 1976. They came off the cats about five seconds after each other and then each of those Tomcats bent right so damn fast... It was amazing. Afterburners blazing... Awesome.
The double engine configuration of the tomcat along with the stringent requirements on speed and glideslope for carrier landings mean that any seasoned navy carrier fighter pilot is way way way beyond the abilities of airforce pilots. Go Navy!
I can hear Kenny Loggins singing: Revvin' up your engine Listen to her howlin' roar Metal under tension Beggin' you to touch and go Highway to the danger zone Ride into the danger zone!
I grew up next to an Airforce base so I get to see a lot of planes flying and the best part is when they break the sound barrier over our house because everything will rattle. I love that.
On March 3, 1969, the United States Navy established an elite school for the top one percent of it's pilots. It's purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to ensure that the handful of men and women who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world. They succeeded. Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it:
Thirteen years... and two days after Armed Forces Day. YT Algo: "I thot bettur late then ever... but have no brane... er brain... er bran... is it cereal time yet?"

USN 73-77 Never deployed on a " bird farm." They stay out at sea for extended periods of time. However, they do ride the rough weather better than a destroyer. USS BLANDY DD-943 USS VULCAN AR-5 Fair seas and following winds Sailor!
Gary Grandy that's one of the two main reasons they were retired. The sheer amount of deck space needed was pushing the size of the carriers into an untenable size and cost. Then there was the whole matter of increasing cost of maintenance per flight hour. Upgrading the platform in a similar way that the F-15 received would have been prohibitive. They were better off starting with a clean sheet of paper. They were damned pretty birds though. Awesome.
@B 132 The matter of reduced RCS has been a bit of a sacred cow in a way. Designers seemed to need to pay homage to the idea rather than actually execute it in a large way. The goalposts were stretched a bit as I understand for what began as the JSF project which politically morphed into the current F-35. RCS was addressed mainly in the forward track of the airframe and that was supposedly enough to deliver the first-shoot-first-kill advantage. Fads in the MIC for airframe design concepts are very expensive when they carry over too far into areas where they may not be best suited. The old Soviet bureaus were apparently tasked to explore specific concepts for small batches of aircraft with no loss of political cred in their system it seems. Of course in a competitive profit based environment, everyone wants to crank out 3000+ units of any airframe they invest years and billion developing no matter how stupid the white elephant might become. I loved the F-35 as a proof of concept but I don't (didn't) want to pay to put it into full production in multiple roles and tasks at such a ridiculous extravagance by stretching goalposts and redefining mission parameters to suit that product and nothing else where needed. Another F-35A jet was just lost in the desert days ago during an aerial probe & drogue (daytime) refueling exercise. The KC-130 tanker captain was able to get his bird down on one and a half remaining engines but there's no such option for the combat fighter - they had to punch out. Everybody is alive thankfully. Imagine how many times the Naval version will struggle with the refueling process in the pitch dark of night over rough seas while awaiting a landing slot on the lone carrier deck for a thousand miles. I curse the string of political and biased business decisions that got us there over the decades.
zak el True, however, without any mechanical engineering advisors, they are useless, as well as a lot of hours of maintenance costs, and flight time, they are just sitting ducks.
@MrJambone1 It is, but the Navy would prefer that you be very, very ready before you take the helm of their $35 million fighter jet. Those 4 years includes basic flight school, advanced flight school, platform training, carrier qualifications, etc... it's a long process, but in the end you're one of the best pilots in the world, so I'd say it's a fair trade. Did I mention landing on a carrier is hard?

Today 16 years later I no longer have any grandparents alive I celebrated Memorial Day with my daughter and girlfriend. A few minutes ago I gave my daughter a kiss good night and now I’m just having a smoke in the garage watching RUclips videos enjoying the nice night. It’s crazy how fast lift changes. I know my comment has nothing to do with this video but if you still have grandparents alive don’t go to the bar and hang out with ur friends every night go get a pizza this Saturday night and bring it over to ur grandparents house spend time with them. In 10 years from now all ur friends will have family’s of their own you won’t talk to or see 99% of them anymore and you will think about all of them nights you wasted with those friends for a relationship that didn’t mean anything while ur grandparents were sitting home. If I could go back in time it wouldn’t be to get Rich or anything like that it would be to tell my young self to spend more time with family. Again sorry I’m completely off topic but maybe one person reads this and spends more time with family so they don’t regret it later.

I still love the F4U Corsair, but the Tomcat is the most awesome Navy aircraft ever flown!
I never got tired of watching the Tomcats take off. I would love to be able to spend a day or two on the deck one more time
I did 2 cruises with Connie (cv-64) V1 division. Nothing beats the tomcat. The noise was always distinct. Completely different from the rest of them. Love to see afterburners at dusk!
It's been 13 years and here we are, watching three fighter jets taking off from an aircraft carrier for no reason.
They are going to kill bad guys! Duh!

Nowadays the good guys who became the bad guys.
If the are headed to Florida and Mar Lago …. Then more power to them !
F-14 clips without Top Gun music should be blocked by youtube.
I was on this ship from 1985 to 1990. It was commissioned in 1986. USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71.
Here after Top Gun Maverick
Incredible film
Incredible aircraft. Amazing turning ability with the movable wings. These are huge fighters and to see one with wings extended flying side ways turning is just plain awesome.
Even if top gun was never a movie the aviation nerd in me would still think the tomcat is one of the coolest fighters ever to be produced. Sometimes I wonder what it’d be like if they remade it with stealth design, panels, and angles.
That was the longest 1 minute and 20 seconds of my life
These are magnificent machines. I got to see them up close aboard USS Kitty Hawk when she visited Sydney about 20 years ago. Back when the world made sense.
Okay, who forgot to add the Kenny Loggins soundtrack?
I witnessed a four F_4 launch at night in the Tonkin Gulf in 1966. Spectacular 😌
Which carrier? My Uncle served on the Forrestal and I was fortunate enough to serve on the Stennis that utilizes the Forrestal anchors.
I just love the Tomcats. Simply beautiful.
Great video. I was onboard when this was taken. 👍⚓ Parachute Rigger (AW/SW) 2nd Class 🪂
The last one has Maverick & Goose for sure!
It wasn't that the TF30 was a bad engine it's that the Tomcat wasn't designed to work well with it and the bad intake design would create compressor stalls consistantly
i heard that the old engines were far superior engines at high speed high altitude though
@@vincentvoncarnap No the TF-30s loved low altitude. They could do some amazing things at 5K.
I was a cook on the America in '86 when we blasted Libya! Whenever I had time off, I would just hang out on "Vulture's Row" for hours and watch those boys on deck do one of the "most dangerous" jobs on earth!!
I was a nuke on the Roosevelt (CVN-71-the deck in this video) and I would hit Vulture's Row off watch. Loved watching night flight ops.
Is it just me or does the RUclips algorithm bring the best people of the RUclips community together on the most random videos years later?
I am here because-of the new Top Gun movie!
Could never get tired seeing these badboys take off. Definitely one of my favorites. These & the SR-71.
I was lucky enough to see an actual "LAUNCH THE ALERT FIVE" on Connie back about 1976. They came off the cats about five seconds after each other and then each of those Tomcats bent right so damn fast... It was amazing. Afterburners blazing... Awesome.
Save yourself the time go to 1:17
SoG Watchman Thanks
Thanks
Yeahhh!
I was just going to say why do we have 1:17 of watching planes sit on the deck ?
Thanks man 😅👏🏻
To know that this video was uploaded when I was nine and didn't know about youtube makes me feel nostalgic.
Legends are watching this 15 years later 💪💪
Four years stationed on a carrier and I never got tired of seeing that..
What function is the wall behind the planes?
The double engine configuration of the tomcat along with the stringent requirements on speed and glideslope for carrier landings mean that any seasoned navy carrier fighter pilot is way way way beyond the abilities of airforce pilots. Go Navy!
You forgot the topgun school
yup
I'm tilted lol take it back 😤
Naval Aviator.* The US Navy had pilots for many decades before airplanes even existed.
I can hear Kenny Loggins singing:
Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go
Highway to the danger zone
Ride into the danger zone!
I hear "You screw up just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit outta Hong Kong"
Top Gun
I grew up next to an Airforce base so I get to see a lot of planes flying and the best part is when they break the sound barrier over our house because everything will rattle. I love that.
Anyone 2024?

This is beautiful, my Grandmother worked with the electronics on these in Grumman.
My father was lead right wing electrician for 16 years at North Island in San Diego. One of my favorite planes. Next to the B1 Lancer, and F111.

Those are some big ass planes!
You should've seen the F-111.
Awesome.

@Not4nought GE Engine upgrade made an incredible thrust to weight boost. Don't tangle with those cats. Tomcats Forever!
Your video will make a fine addition to my "RUclips algorithm strikes again" collection
I miss the tomcats.
Th3uNn3rV3d We all do...
Th3uNn3rV3d pain in the ass to maintain, but damn was it an awesome jet!
Steve Lawrence I agree. Especially when I was in a Tomcat Squadron named VF24 Fighting Renegades.
Still in service in Iran :D /watch?v=8MbrdMccNsM
zak el True, however, without any mechanical engineering advisors, they are useless, as well as a lot of hours of maintenance costs, and flight time, they are just sitting ducks.

On the day this was posted I was 21 years old I probably was at my grandparents house during the day celebrating Memorial Day hanging out with my family eating food then sitting on the couch listening to my grandpa tell me some stories about when he was a kid and about the Korean War later that night I was probably dealing with some drama from some girls I was dating and figuring out what bar everyone is going to that night. Again sorry I’m completely off topic but maybe one person reads this and spends more time with family so they don’t regret it later.
damn bro that's some deep shit. but you're right. i can relate. life is short. don't waste it on people who won't be around.
