How can you tell what model you have? I have someone wanted to sell me one saying it’s a Mk1 but it doesn’t look like it to me.

The Mk1 is to the left, it always has a silver front panel

Most important is to buy the high-speed 2-track version, if you're serious about sound quality. If you need to be compatible with older tapes recorded at lower speeds, you should get another machine for those.

LOL. I still have three REVOX,, A-77's. Though no Mark 4. I don't get any red, VU, meters when in record. Oh well?
But I still have three. One,, 3.75/7.5 IPS, 1/4 track. One, 3.75/7.5 IPS, half track, Stereo. And one, 7.5/15 IPS. With the front panel. Vary Option. 1/2 track stereo.
All 3 machines are great. They just keep working. They are better than, Studer's. They were made in Germany. Studer's, fragile, finicky and made in Switzerland. REVOX''s are much better. Minor really old and they work great. They require nearly no care. I keep wondering how they are doing? I keep checking them. And wondering why they don't seem to be aging? These are just consumer machines. They work far better than the professional machines. And they are all Class-A, transistor electronics also! No push pull circuits. They are pure, Class A Transistor. Few people realize this. They are not like American machines.
In fact. In a shootout. With a fully destroyed REVOX, A-77. It outperformed a brand-new, 1979 built. $3700,, stereo Scully. Because I was in charge at Scully. And I had a REVOX A-77 on my bench. I had just purchased for myself. Used. It was really really rough. Extremely, rough. Like nothing you have ever seen kind of, rough on a fine reel to reel recorder. It fell out of the back of the trunk of his car. Like, literally. He told me. That's why it looked so bad. He told me. I had no reason to disbelieve him. It looked exactly as you think it would everything broken and busted. BUT IT STILL WORKED! And it met brand-new Skelly specs. The owner of Skelly got wind. He came out to the production floor. He got really upset over this. I couldn't blame him LOL. I thought it was very funny, myself. Since I was Quality Control Manager. At Scully. One of America's legendary recorder manufacturers. And I had just purchased this one used. Put it on my test bench. At Scully. And what do you know? It tested as good as a brand-new Skelly. It was all beat to hell. Really really badly. How badly?
The capstan motor shaft. Had,, so much rust on it. I took a razor blade. And shaved the rust off. Then. The tape ran slowly. But it has an internal speed adjustment. I put it back on speed.
The rubber pinch roller. Was rock hard. This would normally produce. Subpar, unsatisfactory, tape speed and flutter. It exceeded brand-new Scully's. Which it should not have done. With a rockhard rubber pinch roller and only .7% flutter. Like a brand-new Skelly. That cost $3700. What did I pay for the Wrecked, A-77? I think it was something stupid like, $50? Maybe it was $100? But not more for something that badly destroyed. It had no case. The case had busted apart. He threw it out. It had no transport faceplate. The balance potentiometer had gotten busted off. It had no break bands. It was missing the reel, spring-loaded, hold downs. It had rust on the heads. It met brand-new Scully frequency response, specs. It was very funny. And that was 1979. I still own that machine to this day. After replacing all of those busted parts. And the case. It looks like in works like, brand-new. The heads had ridges cut into them. I lapped, the heads. They still have lots of life. They sound great. A REVOX A-77 for next to nothing back in 1979. And then I had the other 2 machines. They were both the half track machines. This was 1/4 track. Pure unadulterated, consumer REVOX A-77. That fell out of the trunk of his car onto the pavement. It's very funny. This thing has a diecast transport frame. It won't bend.. Like everything else would bend. It's beyond Professional. And AMPEX would bend. A Scully would bend. A 3M would bend. An MCI would bend.. This didn't. It's built like a caps tutor. But better in Germany.
So I'm an actual expert at this. These are very worthy. For those analog tape, owner/aficionados. All of the stupid folks out there LOL they don't realize the tape manufacturers, argon. Val moved. A thing of the past. Leaded gasoline. Only available at civilian airports. And not for your car. For your paper or your session. May be a Mooney? But not his church. Does that still exist? Hopefully not? He was another crazy extremist. To make the world a more better psycho place. Along with Jim Jones. Visionaries of their death. No Jesus, necessary. Just them. LOL. LMAO. And Heavens Date. And DOE. What a bunch of crazy morons.
I had to cover that news for NBC-TV for nearly 20 years. That and John Wayne Bobbitt! Who I got closer to than I wanted to. But that's another story for another day.
His wife. Left a little part of him. 20 feet away from the front door of my commercial recording studio.

And think about this. As model numbers go. The REVOX is there A-77. The closest equivalent is the Studer,, B-67. They are almost identical. Except the REVOX is better! As I've used both. I am not fond of the Studer. I mean it's okay. You might as well have a REVOX? It's like a REVOX. So why bother with a Studer that costs a lot more? Just so you can say you have something built in Switzerland? Buy a watch. It's easier and better that way. And get yourself an old used REVOX. I think any variety will do. Be careful of the old vacuum tube G-36's, though. The transport interlock buttons. Fail. You cannot fix them. There is no replacements available. It's kaput. The audio electronics sound nice. But what do you do without the transport? Don't get those. Stick with the transistor units. FUCK the vacuum tubes! If they are not TELEFUNKEN? They are not worth it. It really is that simple. Accept no substitutes. Other than TELEFUNKEN, vacuum tubes a.k.a. valves. We say tubes in the USA. Just like toothpaste. But nothing in them. Except Micah and other stuff.. I don't know what he's doing in there? He shouldn't be in there. There are a lot of hot electrons. And voltages. But that's what's inside your vacuum tubes. Micah. Go figure? That's why we use transistors today made from silicon. Micah is not in there. But Arsenic, is. Arsenic makes, semiconductors, work. Because it's not exactly a metal. It's not exactly a mineral. It's not exactly glass. It's not exactly dirt.. It's a semi conductor. And I thought they drove big trucks? But no! As it turns out. They drive electrons. Who knew? Truck drivers are smart and talented people.
Why do semiconductors need arsenic? So they can poison you to death if you eat them. Do not eat them.
