    Can you do a follow up video to back boring/overboring and maybe talk a bit more about what manufacturers use what type boring type and so forth, thanks!!

    I’ve always believed over boring was just another form of snake oil. As far as I know, all US ammo uses plastic wads with a cupped gas seal base so I guess it doesn’t matter here.

    I had a 12 gauge 1187 slug gun (rifled choke tube). I was shooting 3 inch mag slugs through it. The thing kicked me hard. I had Magna Port lengthen the forcing cone along with porting the barrel. Tamed it right down.

    I once had a Browning BPS that kicked like a mule and patterned terribly, I took it to a gunsmith and found out the force cone was only 3/8" long, he rebored the force cone to 1 1/2" and it made all the difference in the world. I used it for turkey hunting and once finished it shot like a champ. Much better patterning and a bit less recoil. It was a great investment.

    Imho it makes a big difference for improving patterns at least in a 410. My Rem 1100 Sporting 410 has a bore approximately .430 and it patterns better than any other 410 I’ve owned.

    Another good one, dudes. Very informative, in fact I think it helped me understand what it means to have your choke well paired to your barrel(the relative level of constriction you've mentioned before)
    As part of this series, you think you'll ever make a video on inertia trigger vs mechanical triggers?

    1.40 back boring barrels, Back boring is rimming the barrel out from the breach end. the theory is that it reduces recoil.
    Boring out the barrel behind the choke is recess choking not back boring. You do not bore the barrel out at the breach
    end to get more choke.
    What happens when you bore out the barrel over size or back boring to reduce the recoil? In theory the wad and shot should more faster down the barrel giving you more recoil however the only way the recoil can be reduced is if the gasses go around the wad and the velocity is reduced. reducing the recoil.

    • @charlessmith4242
      @charlessmith4242 3 года назад

      In your scenario,gas flowing around the wad will create a "blown pattern" not good.
      By lengthening the forcing cones you lessen "perceived "recoil. You don't get as sharp of a recoil sensation because the lengthening smoothes out the pressure curve. You also will deform less pellets in the transformation.
      Please read up on this topic for a better understanding.

    John ,I've heard far to many felt wad farter's from over bored or back bored barrels to convince me ,
    I have never had any recoil or pattern problems over many years with good old .729 bored guns .I really don't think it would give advantage or affect any capable shots performance useing back /overbores either way, as you say the possible miniscule speed increase gives no worthwhile advantage what so ever . Just my opinion . Good constructive video again.

      I wouldn’t own a gun over 18.6/.732 personally Gerald. Just more consistent in my head.
      I have had too many people come in with stuck wads from cheap cartridges in 18.8 bored (generally high end) comp guns.

      Very informative video although from your reply above I am a little unclear . Your general conclusion in the video is that the overall performance difference is marginal but then you comment above that you would not own an overbored gun which as you have pointed out accounts for the vast majority of sporters and competition guns on the market.

    Can you explain more on Browning’s 742 Back Bored barrels? And why do they port them? Most of the ported guns I’ve seen have plastic built up from the wads in the ports.
    I shot 10 different guns in one day trying to find my 1st o/u gun for Clays.
    I will say shooting these guns side by side that the Browning’s do feel like they kick less than non-ported, non-back bored, non-over bored guns I’ve shot.
    I even shot a Browning 725 non-ported vs the 725 ported version and to me the non-port gun did seem to kick just a tiny bit more, but it wasn’t an adjustable stock like the ported gun. So it weight 5oz less.

      Porting reduces the gun's tendency to swing up when shooting by using the gases produced when firing to dampen the movement off target

    Thank you John for another great video. Well, to my personal opinion, none of manufacturers will be doing research, testing and so on just for the sake of pleasing customer. Imagine how many resources have been used to start producing back bored barrels. Barrel diameter variations followed variations of ammo. I am sure back-boring, over-boring, whatever boring, lengthening of forcing cones e.t.c was implemented purely to adapt the guns to steel shot. More speed can never be a truth. You can not beat law of physics, and physics tell us - more volume equals less pressure, less pressure - less velocity. Plus overbored guns tend to have not a clean kill when it comes to 35 + meters. We forget that velocity also depends on shape of a shot.

    • @charlessmith4242
      @charlessmith4242 3 года назад

      Hypegamer gig,you got this backwards. More volume increases pressure which will increase recoil. Any increase in weight to a cartridge be it powder, shot etc. will increase your pressure and recoil and could increase muzzle velocity and energy.
      I don't know where you got the idea that back boring reduces pattern efficiency beyond 35 meters. That is complete jibberish! The hole notion of back boring and the lengthening of the forcing cones(chamber and choke) is to provide a less violent setback of the shot charge as it transitions from the chamber to the barrel and again from the barrel through the choke. This reduces deformation of the pellets and helps to provide a more uniform pattern. This is beneficial as a hunting gun as well as a clay target gun.
      Does it help with steel shot? Yes, but not as much as it does with lead.
      The clay target shooters are the ones that really pushed this idea. Any way that makes a gun produce better patterns with less perceived recoil and lessens(small though it might be)the psi. in the barrel/chamber area is a plus.
      Furthermore,what kind of shot are you shooting? I know there are some out of round types of shot being made today,but they do not have much if any loss in velocity. You sure your not confusing shotgun pellets with rifle bullets?

    • @hypegamergig1785
      @hypegamergig1785 3 года назад

      @@charlessmith4242 , well... if you want to dispute physics I am not of any help here. If (with the same amount of combusting matter) increase of volume increases pressure in your universe then you are correct. Do yourself a favor, shoot same cartridge to wooden plate from both overbored + long forcing cones and old school 18.4. Compare penetration. Music over 🙂 P.S. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyle%27s_law

    • @charlessmith4242
      @charlessmith4242 3 года назад

      @@hypegamergig1785 Any time you add additional weight to a cartridge (such as shot, powder,heavier wads,etc.) you are going to increase recoil. If the barrel diameter is of standard size and you over bore it to a point where your wad does not seal properly you will get a blown pattern and loss of velocity of the shot charge. How much of a loss depends on how much gas is leaked out around the wad. Load powder and shot without a wad and see what you get! You will have a drastic loss of pressure and little to none velocity.
      Correct back boring allows(along with the lengthening of the forcing cones)for a lessening of barrel pressure but not enough to effect performance. It also causes more room allowing the shot column to shorten some what reducing pellet deformation and this helps to obtain better pattern conformity.
      A longer parallel section of the choke area also helps you obtain better patterns.
