Mary with the best parenting advice! There is really no way to know if you are ready to be a parent before you have children. And your kids will do things you are not ready for and other times you know how to be there for them. That is life.

I'm in kinda the same situation Steve. Brain injuries creeping up on me from a lifetime of jackass and accidents mixed with my more serious enevours. Shocking concentration, anxiety and, at times, anger (which was never a problem in my past). But guitar is my go to for meditation, improved focus and patience...and i need a lot of that on my six strings because I am not talented. Glad to hear your brief story of why you play Steve. Best of luck with your rehab and playing. For me they are one in the same. Can I also suggest singing if you don't already? For many singing is a big ask. I find instructors who sing the note/chord changes really help me find that the key that I am otherwise a bit deaf to. Singing is really powerful stuff for the brain and mood. Guitar meditation on a whole different plane.

I found Marty on You tube In June of 2009 after severely breaking my leg . His lessons and my old guitar helped me through a pretty bad time. Sadly I only posted one video on you tube myself about a year ago . I promised a friend in California I’d do more . I hope the motivation I’m feeling right now from this interview lasts at least long enough to do another soon. Thank you both for what you do , god bless you and stay safe and well !!!

Great to see someone doing what he loves as a career and glad to see this interview. I tried playing guitar more than a few times when I was younger and actually took lessons in my late twenties for a while. Work got really busy and so did life and the guitar fell to the wayside. Scroll ahead to now - I am now semi-retired and actually have some time available. So, I finally got around to picking up the guitar again which had been sitting in the basement for over 30 years. I was hesitant as I know I will never be really good, especially with my short fingers, but decided to give it a shot anyhow. Sniffing around on RUclips there are all kinds of guitar experts showing how to play songs, etc., but none of them come close to breaking it down the way Marty does. He is hands down the best at explaining how and what is going on inside of a song. He has inspired me to go for it despite my age and lack of talent. He also has excellent taste in music. KEEP IT GOING MARTY.

I just love Marty....as an instructor and now after this interview even more so and perhaps even more importantly as a person. This was REAL and I gotta say one of the greatest gifts of this lockdown has been getting to know on a deeper and more intimate level all of these wonderful musical people (yourself included Mary) that we follow and learn from and deeply appreciate year in and year out. Also wonderful are all these artists (John Fogerty, James Taylor, Dennis DeYoung, several others) who I grew up listening to reaching out with performances from their lockdown. So good :)

My favorite moment was at 44:01 where he talks about his dearest guitar. To me it sounds like even his voice is trembling a bit, like when you are getting nervous or really excited. And like you said in the beginning that you can really tell that Marty loves and lives Music. But his comment about his 335 and especially that honest expression at the time stamp is a testament for that. You just gotta love seeing musicians getting excited about music! Thank you Mary, keep up the great work.

Teaching any subject is the best way to learn anything, because it makes you look inside to see what you are trying to say/teach :D
You're combined list of recommended records/artists is so spot on. One I would add to that is Amazing Rhythm Aces, the only group I have ever heard live that was EXACTLY as they recorded - note for note. Some really good songs and riffs, and so well integrated that they could pull that off and still convey joy on stage and fun for the audience :)

    Hi Mary/Marty,
I completely relate to what Marty says here. I played for many years, in and out of bands. I’ve gotten older now and see the guitar as something different now. I play because it brings me some peace, internally. This in no way way replaces God, but rather compliments that commitment. I’m exclusively fingerstyle for the last several years. When I pick up a guitar, I sometimes pick just a few notes, which will always take me somewhere new. I don’t play for anyone but myself these days. I’m not sure if meditation is the right word, but it could be for me, as I seem to end up going somewhere deeper each time.
By the way, when I picked up my guitar a few years ago to start this new era of my life, Marty was the first RUclips person I saw. His smiling face gave me a nudge I needed to get back to my love of guitar, and I’m grateful to that guy. Sometimes you just don’t know how far your encouragement actually goes, so I’m letting you know now, it goes further than you think
Thanks to Mary for this vid.. all the best.
    Randy

Great interview. It was one of Marty's videos that got me started in my guitar journey nearly 4 years ago and the live video the two of you did last year that introduced me to your music. Lovely to see you together again.

Hey Mar, I just wanted to say that myself, my wife and my friends saw your very first interview with him & it was great and this one is great as well. But we here on Long Island NY are all rooting for you to have a wonderful, happy fulfilling career! What’s separates you as compared to most RUclipsrs is 1, Your a Woman making a living in a male-dominated Industry, & Yes, it’s gotten much, much better than the ’80s ’90s but still has a long way to go! 2, you never use that fact that YOU ARE a smart, attractive young Woman to manipulate your career and 3, you’ve gone through some hard times and are not shy in saying that you have struggle with your career & choices you’ve made in your life and it’s NOT a “tell-all!” ( that’s why we also like Adam Neely as well ) because regardless if your a male or female? Everyone can totally relate to making mistakes! Even our favorite Rick B has made plenty ( more then he actually admits too I’m sure though lol ) so from your fans in NY keep up the good work! You’ve come a long way kiddo! I just turned 48 so now a can start using words like “kiddo” take care...

...and I am sure both of you ( Mary & Marty) never imagined in your widest imagination that you would have faithful subscribers siting near the might Victoria falls in Zambia. Watching your vids with sound of the cascading waterfalls constant in the back ground. Thanks to the RUclips Network. Heard Rick asking you, Mary, if RUclips were social media or a network platform...whatever it is, glad I found you guys and subscribed.

3:30 - 5:00 and again around 6:00 - 6:30. I don’t have Marty’s skill set (or yours), but I often find guitar-playing to be therapeutic in pretty much that same “get lost in it,” something approaching meditative, way. In fact, it relates pretty directly to one of your tips for playing, Mary - the “in the dark” one. It’s really pretty easy to “get lost in it” when sitting in a dark room, especially if I’m playing along to a track I know well, or even something I’ve made up myself, so the mechanics of “this fingertip goes THERE, that one goes THERE,” or ‘Now it switches to THIS chord,” or “Here’s the key change,” and so on isn’t something I think about very much, if at all. It just, as you say, “flows.” My take on much of the conversation between the two of you boils down to “You be you, the rest will follow.”
