This is my favorite movie of all time literally watched it hundreds of times on video cassette, Laserdisc, DVD and Blue Ray then streaming over the last 30 uears. Paul Riser plays the most despicable human being, if I met him today I would love to shake his hand for playing such an incredible bad guy in such a great film. Fantastic work.

Bishop is great, yeah. No question, he's a solid, stand-up guy for sure. I'm more of a Vasquez fan myself though. Brave, beautiful, nerves of steel, calm and unflappable under any kind of pressure, even stares death in the eyes without flinching. She's so awesome she even got a TV trope named after her. ("Vasquez always dies".)
What if i told you bishop is still under control of the Wey Yu? What if I told you he still have to gather xx-121 for the Wey Yu? 😂🎉

I am obsessed with that shot of Newt in the water with the alien looming up over her. I think it's engrained in my mind from when I saw this as a kid. It's like a mash up of the worst childhood fears: being alone, in the dark, in unclear water, with a monster. Like god damn, what a nightmare!

There is a deleted scene where Ripley is looking for Newt and comes across a cocooned Burke. Burke is alive and asks for her help, she hands him a grenade. Thanks Jen😀😀😀

Makes me wonder, out of that final stand-off with the Marines as most of the remaining ones were taken out, how many were taken back to be cocooned and like, maybe Ripley just ran right past them to get to Newt? Like, was Hudson there like "Wtf man? You didn't see me here??" I know Vasquez and Gorman blew themselves up. Who else was there, I forget?
When Hicks and Ripley exchange their first names (which we didn't know her first name was Ellen in the first movie) - it breaks me. Then it's worse when little Newt hugs her at the end and calls her "Mommy" - tears every time.
I liked getting to know Ripley more in this for sure 👍👍
That's actually the scene I can't stand and thankfully, it's not in the theatrical version. Ripley knows Newt is seconds away from being impregnated by a facehugger and is hellbent on rescuing her. There's NO WAY she would have paused for a few flirty Hallmark moments with Hicks. I'm all for the two of them connecting but the timing of that scene was absolutely ridiculous.
@@garyglaser4998 I agree with you with how it seems inappropriate considering the urgency of the situation. I love the scene, it's an important one that helps ground the characters a little, make them feel like they are real people, but It should've been placed a bit earlier.
@@garyglaser4998 Eh, I think some can be chalked up to the whole gearing up process, and also Ripley probably needing some psyching up and reassurances that she's doing the right thing at that moment. And heck, it could have been a quick convo while the craft was landing on the platform to let her off.

This movie is a perfect example of how to make a sequel. It continues the story with a new story, without trying to retell the old story. Sure, there were nods back to the first film (count down to big boom, false security, final battle), but it was an entirely new story. Far too many sequels just take what the studio thinks was popular about the last film and try to do it again except Bigger! and wind up jumping the shark.
It's such an awesome sequel!!! 👍
It's also a good example of subverting expectations done properly. The synthetic is good not bad, the badass military is overconfident and acts rashly while the little girl knows how to survive. These choices all feel like they fit within the world and complement the overall story, they aren't done just to be opposite and different. Cameron also does this well in T2 but I won't say more because Jen hasn't gotten to that yet.
And they didn't go off canon.
It follows the surefire Horror Movie sequel formula: add more monsters and a kid.
@@tomgeorge7281 I thought the formula was to add hot promiscuous wrong-turn-lost cheerleaders to be picked off one by one.
Personally the lowkey MVP goes to Hudson, absolutely out of his depth, controlled by fear right up until the Aliens attack and he finally let's his anger take the wheel, letting loose on all of the Aliens, arguably the 2nd most badass moment in the entire movie.
Gorman going back for Vazquez.
I suggest the James Cameron movie "True Lies". Great Action movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Ripley needed Newt as much as Newt needed Ripley. Having missed her own daughter's....well, entire life, Newt instantly became Ripley's surrogate daughter. Their relationship is the single greatest thing elevating this movie above the norm.

Once again, my two fave moments in the movie ...
When Ripley steps out in the power-suit and says "Get away from her, you *bitch!* " Such an _awesome_ line!
And then at the end when Newt hugs Ripley and calls out "Mommy!" ... gets me *every* time! Just a _great_ moment!
P.S. - I also vote for _"True Lies"_ from James Cameron ... a *great* action movie with an excellent cast, and _lots_ of hilarious stuff too! I just wish they'd had _"True Lies 2"_ ... as a (good) sequel!

Three of the actors from this movie are together in another film that I like. Jenette Goldstein (Vasquez), Lance Hendrickson (Bishop), and Bill Paxton(Hudson) are nomadic vampires in "Near Dark." It was directed by Katherine Bigelow, who won an Oscar for "The Hurt Locker."
Near Dar was one of the three great vampire films of the 80s (the others being Lost Boys and Fright Night). Unfortunately, I haven't seen anyone react to it.
@@Bfdidc I agree with your trio. Of them, I'm torn between Fright Night and Near Dark as my favorite. Fright Night reminds me of staying up late on weekends as a boy to watch Ghost Host or Creature Feature. Near Dark is a fresh approach to the genre, and includes three of the performers I enjoyed seeing in Aliens.

I recommend James Camerons The Abyss (1989).
Watched it 1993 on a HD tv on Laser Disc, it blew my mind how good it looked.

I love your cosplays. ❤️ I’m so glad you’re watching the directors cut. This way, you get the character moments of Ripley never getting to reunite with her daughter, which makes the later stuff with Newt all the more substantial.

The difference with the crew of the Nostromo was they were civilians working for a company by transporting minerals from another planet. This crew was all military trained for battle (with a mission to rescue colonists--but who arrogantly dismissed Ripley's report of the real dangers they would face) but allowed their arrogance and ignorance to seal their doom.
Plus they had guns.

This is my all time favorite sci Fi film. Couple interesting bits of trivia.
1) Newt has never acted in any other movie than this. Kid actors at the time were cast mainly in commercials, and were conditioned to smile after every line. She was picked because she didn't have that.
2) Paul Reiser took his mother to the movies premier night, and she stood up and cheered when he died.
3) The actress who played Vasquez is actually Jewish, and she played John Connor's adoptive mother in Terminator 2.
4) Another Newt one. She kept messing up her line in the chute scene on purpose so she could play on the slide more.😆

I heard the "Newt slide" thing a little differently. It was near the end of filming, and everyone was getting a bit tired. Cameron promised Carrie that once they got the scene, he'd let her play on the slide for a while. She did it, and the whole crew seemed reinvigorated by how much fun Carrie had.
Could be both, I suppose.
The actor who play Vasquez, Jenette Goldstein, didn't have time to read the script before her audition. She thought the film was about undocumented immigrants, aka "illegal aliens". Cameron must have liked her audition a lot anyway, because, as you noted, he went on to cast her in other roles in his films, including as an Irish mother in "Titanic".

That were you got Hudson "illegal alien" joke. Cameron like her story thinking movie was about illegal aliens he wrote the joke into the script

That line sums up a lot of people to this day.
Ripley is one of my all time favorite characters in a movie/series.
I absolutely love the scene in the elevator when she's getting ready. You could see the fear in her face, she looks up, takes a deep breath, and just says "ok, here we go," even though she's scared shitless.
That's what's missing with a lot of action movies today. Everyone's a super hero with no fear. When they have fear and vulnerability and motive, it's easy to cheer for them. That's what makes great characters.
I don't know why, but "Get away from her, you BITCH!" always gets me choked up. It's like a mommy who's fed up with some bullshit haha.
Also, Hudson still has one of the greatest "last stand" moments.
He preached being a badass, got all wimpy and whiney when shit hit the fan, but he found his balls and went out swearing like a mofo and became the badass.
One of the very few sequels that has high contention to the original movie, and maybe surpasses it.
You'll love the Terminator 1 & 2 movies when you get to them. More great characters and acting in there as well!
Hicks has to be the low key MVP for me. He was the rock that everyone lent on. Always calm , always showing a duty of care for everyone around him. Even when Ripley felt hopeless he empowered her with the M41A pulse rifle..
The first one showed the single creature having a good amount of intelligence.
This one showed not only did the cannon fodder/warrior/gatherer Aliens having extreme intelligence which included problem solving, it showed the Queen having near human intelligence and having more complex human emotions including anger and vengeance. She also showed bargaining, reasoning, understanding and deceit.
She's terrifying!!!

Later entries in series expanded on this and expanded universe comics, books and games implied the creatures having a sort of telepathic link with each other and to the Queen. Other books tried to imply their intelligence was partially inherited from the hosts they were implanted in.
I recall the iconic line "Game over, man" from the 1st time I saw/heard it. However, I had forgotten that the actor says the line off screen, not on a close-up.
And then another iconic line right after, ‘they mostly come at night… mostly’

Gorman redeeming himself is the greatest scene (amongst many). That's what lived with me from this movie.
I think he always had the best intentions, he was just very inexperienced. It kind of fits with the theme of the "company" not taking things very seriously and only seeing the business aspects. Just send a small team to check out the planet, it's probably nothing.
One of James Cameron's biggest struggle in the writing was how to believably bring Ripley back. It makes sense for a sequel, but who in their right mind would go back to such a dangerous place?! He looked to actual Vietnam Vets for his inspiration. He said: "It had to be psychological. One of the things that interested me is that there are a lot of soldiers from Vietnam, who have been in intense combat situations, who re-enlisted to go back again. Because they had these psychological problems that they had to work out. It’s like an inner demon to be exorcised. That was a good metaphor for her character."
The whole movie became a bit of an allegory about the Vietnam. Lots of confidence, a lot of training, a ton of firepower, set plans, and it all falls apart.

I first saw this movie, when I think I was six years old. I'd snuck downstairs late one night to watch TV while everyone else was asleep, because at that age you KNOW all the best TV is on late when you're supposed to be in bed. I flick around a little and there's this movie. Its sci-fi, with cool soldiers, with cool guns and a cool space-ship with missiles that flip out, so obviously this is for me. Then the monsters start boiling out of the dark and I slam off the TV and run back to my room and hide under the covers. I had nightmares about Aliens crawling on my ceiling and at my bedroom window for a month after that

Saw this when it was released back in '86 in a drive-in, nothing like being out under the stars while watching a movie about aliens! Nice job as always Jen!

One of my all time favorite movies. I saw the premiere at the best local theater with some friends. Amazing action packed thrill ride with effects that still hold up today.

Me too. I was only 13 years old, but I remember it well.
I love that during the crash sequence, Bill Paxton sees the landing craft coming, looks down at the little ditch at his feet, and just falls into it like a plank. A really understated choice when everyone else is freaking out and high-stepping for the nearest rock outcrop.

Ripley and Newt are both survivors. The rare kind of people who react to overwhelming situations without freezing, or losing control. Probably my favorite aspect of this movie is that Ripley is not only an amazingly courageous female protagonist, but every interaction with Newt is just the essence of maternal instinct. It makes her even more amazing than if she were just tough.
Yes I agree! I think I would freeze for sure but they have such courage. Love that Ripley is both maternal & badass, such an icon 👍
@dmwalker24 - Absolutely, you've stated it well, the connection I feel we all have with Ripley's character is because she's relatively normal, it doesn't require her to be in any way exagerated. She's not super strong, or already a weapons expert or anything unrealistic, she's simply intelligent, courageous, technically proficient (as an astronaut would be), ethically motivated, and most of all keeps her cool under pressure. A genuine hero because we can all 'reasonably' aspire to try and be like her when shit gets real!
@@previouslyachimp I hadn't thought of it in terms of 'normality' specifically, but I think you are correct. There's always this feeling like she's the rational one in a very irrational world. Almost everyone else's moral compass and perceptions are defined by The Company, and thus totally messed up.
Yes, the director's cut of the film works better because it explains why Ripley had such strong maternal instincts. The theater version cut out the scene that she had a daughter who dies of age because she was in space so long.
@@JLDReactions I had seen the theatre version several times before seeing that scene. It definitely colors the perception of what comes after, and it makes going back in to that processing plant seem understandable, even if not terribly sane.
Fun Fact JEn: At the movie premier. Paul Risner's mother was so disappointed in him as a character. When he locks Ripley in the med bay with the face-huggers and turns off the monitor. She hit him on the shoulder and exclaimed, "Paul how could you" and again when he shuts the door on Ripley and Newt. When it came to his death exclaimed with glee, 'Thank God, he deserved it.' Paul Risner looked at his mother in utter shock. Hilarious for sure.

I took a date to see this film when it first premiered in 1986. Because we had both seen the original 'Alien', we knew that we were likely to be in for a whirlwind of horror! As we entered the theater, we could feel the fearful anxiety of all those present within the audience! This series of motion pictures brought 'Science Fiction Horror' to a NEW LEVEL!
Holy crap, Jen! I didn't know you hadn't watched "Aliens" yet! I'm jazzed!!! Was looking for a GOOD reactor to watch a GOOD movie, and I found it. Thumbs up, but I gotta go make a snack, then come back so I can enjoy watching you watch! Love you, Jen! Cheers!

Another point for Jen! You actually noticed James Horner did the music. So many people don't give a hoot about the composer. Horner is one of the greatest film composers of all time, and you'll find that out even more as you watch more movies. So it shows that you're paying attention that you even noticed. Kudos!!!

When I was in the Army, I watched this movie every time I had Staff Duty.
I often had Soldiers that would show up, knowing it was "Movie night with Aliens"
I read somewhere that Paul Rudd brought his mother to the premiere of this movie. When Rudd’s character died, his mother cheered! Worth a laugh.
You mean Paul… Reiser?! Whole movie would have had a completely different tone if Ant-Man had been the corporate scum! 😂
Really entertaining reactions here! It says so much about the series writing that Ripley is pretty much the instant go-to counter-example for any debate regarding Hollywood's inability to write tough and compelling female leads, and sadly how infrequent they are. She pretty much tops the list of any film character ever when it comes to "badass". We need more Ripleys in film!
maybe Linda Hamilton T2 but your right about hollywood they dont even come close nowadays
@@frankwilson634 T2 was an amazing transformation. Ripley went into mommy mode to kick some ass and probably will still be the best. Sara Conner though was determined to carry the weight/fate of the world.
I guess Ripley did too making sure those aliens were exterminated but never got a chance to train much and went in cold back to back almost.
"Ripley ans the Soldiers": The Colonial Marines are on a Bug Hunt, all right, but THEY are "The Bugs"! I see you're watching the Special Edition, which answered this question I had of the theatrical version: How did Ripley "get close quickly, to "Newt"? A reviewer of the time said: "Sisterhood!" The added scenes added weight/Pathos to the original story. I didn't like the theatrical version of "Alien3," but the Assembly Cut is holds together much better.
I think the theatrical version is the one to watch on first viewing as it had the perfect shape and pacing.
The whole "Colonial Marines v. Bugs" encounter was meant to be a commentary on American aggression in Vietnam, right down to the design of the gear.

Fun fact (and I know I’m late but I’m just seeing this reaction for the first time) the same set for the Alien hive was also used in Batman ‘89 and when the crew of Batman arrived to that set, all the Alien hive stuff was still there. Both were filmed at an old abandoned power plant in England called Acton Power Plant

I was watching that one night when my folks were gone out and I was babysitting my sister. She refused to leave the room no matter how many times I tried kicking her out. When Bishop got ripped in half at the end she clung to me terrified. Someone rang the doorbell and I had to walk to the door with my sister still hanging off me with a vice like grip. She was terrified for years after and finally understood why I wouldn’t let her watch it. She was 7 at the time… 😁

I first saw this movie when I was 10 in 1987 and I had nightmares for a week. Ripley is definitely one of the most badass characters. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I grew up with horror, saw exorcist before I was 10, and aliens gave a nightmare that night.

But I guess it is little different from me watching old-school horror movies (Mummy, Dracula, Werewolf sort of things) when I was young (with my dad to help 'deal' when fervent kids imagination got things a little too real :)).
I was 17 when this was in theaters. When I saw the trailer for it, my friend and I rented Alien so we would be ready for this one. I was not disappointed with either one.
I see you watched an extended cut, which has a nice scene showing Newts family before everything, but I still prefer the theatrical where you don't see Newt till the first time Ripley and the Marines find her.

I agree. The theatrical cut let's your imagination do a lot of the work which makes it all the more tense and terrifying.
The first will always be my favorite but I could easily see why someone would prefer Aliens. Ripley wasn't the "main" character originally so all the development we get with her character over the course of the franchise starts here

What a great movie, and great reaction. Without giving away specific spoilers I can say you can now walk away from the Alien franchise and not miss much.
FUN FACT: The guy who plays Private Drake in this movie, is the same guy who plays the character named Boggs, in The Shawshank Redemption.
The beginning reminds me of Interstellar. The whole space aging. Oh and that whole knife in-between the fingers really did scare that guy, in the script his hand was not supposed to be there, he didn't know they were gonna do that. Makes the scene better knowing this.
"Everybody loves Ripley" would be a good spinoff TV show.

Since you liked this one, you should check out some other James Cameron films like the Terminator movies (1 & 2), True Lies (highly underrated), and The Abyss. James Cameron never disappoints; his movies are masterpieces. Hope to see you watch them!

Ha e to be honest; not a fan of True Lies. Didn't age well, like the Terminator or Alien movies IMO.
Carrie Henn who played Newt soon gave up acting and became a Primary School teacher. When asked what was her favourite scene she said the one in the water. The assistant Director wanted to start filming it early the next day so he had the water kept warm. Carrie said it was too warm so her and the "Alien" sat on the side bathing their feet in the water.
By the way you never "have" a Cat. They own you. Once you get one you life is just about making the Cat happy and content, believe me.
Ripley returning to LV-426 was definitely a big balls decision. Notice how quickly she ripped the card out of the communicator after she said "alright, I'm in", I think in that moment she still wasn't 100% sure about her decision, but she knew that if she didn't want to live with nightmares, she was going to have to face her biggest fears. And she did exactly that.
That's how you write a good character, good story arc and a good female role in particular!
Nowadays "writers" forgot how to do that...

I didn't see it in theater, but on a weekend on HBO at my mother's boyfriend's apartment. They had gone to sleep and I stayed up late to watch by myself. Definitely nostalgia, I was either 11 or 12 in 1986/1987.
The base commander plays the Captain of a space ship in the British tv comedy sci-fi series "Red Dwarf".

@@jenmurrayxo yes it was. I was 15 at the time and had never ever seen a movie quite like it. It was my first brush with the great James Cameron and I have been a fan of his ever since. It's debatable whether this is superior to theoriginal. But I love them both and they both have their merits I think.

Ripley is one of the best written female character in movies. They didn't go the trope of making her macho to look badass but showed her motherhood instinct to allowed her to go above and beyond anyone in that crew. What's so bad about motherly instinct and why can't Hollywood produce more like this character?
One of the BEST video game adaptations of a film is Alien Isolation, you play as Amanda Ripley looking for her mum, the dlcs have where you can play as ripley or dallas

I used to love the Atari Jaguar game console's "Alien vs. Predator" game. It was a first person perspective game where you could play as a marine, a Predator or an alien. Each species had unique advantages and disadvantages and different goals for winning game. Unfortunately, when the console tanked in the market, the game game was never ported to any other system.
I still got my Jaguar and have played it but has been a while. Great game and the motion tracker picking something up gave me the creeps!
Was it different than the AvP game for pc? I had that, and you had the life stages for alien, sight mods for predators, etc.

Did the PC game require the marine to go into the heart of the alien ship and kill the queen and into the Predator ship to get some key cards then activate the marine ship's self destruct and get to the escape pod before the ship exploded to win the game?
I remember playing this game on PC.
There was a PC release of this and it had probably the best multiplayer co-op of its era; absolute legend :).
Me and my mate used to do Iron-Man runs of the levels as a duo - one Life, no ammo respawns, no medkit respawns ... and also Iron-man wave-survival runs to see how long we could last. He became awesome on short-range fire with the mini-gun (to the extent I used to joke "You want a bayonet for that thing?!" :D) and I was real creative with bouncing grenades round corners and off walls to get the Aliens as they evaded (Sooo fast!).
The first time I used the grenade launcher did not go so well tho' - we were at a corridor crossroads with an air shaft above. Aliens started dropping into range on the tracker and I fired into the air-shaft ... and killed all the lights! It was our first time ever encountering destructible objects in a video game ... and that run did not last very long after that :lol:
Unfortunately the subsequent films of the series aren't nearly as good. Watchable but just not nearly as good. But this one, oh my, perhaps better than the first. Certainly much more angst in this one. Glad to see you you react / review it. Be safe "J"
Alien 3 is great. I mean, Aliens is a top 100 film, hard to top it. But Alien 3 is very good and worth watching.
After that yes please do no watch any of them.

Doesn't mean the theatrical product was bad, it is still very good. And the Special edition is even better.
Scorcese, when they were about to edit out some of the violent content in Taxi Driver, threatened to kill the producer and himself. If that slightly edited version had come out, it still would have been one of the greatest movies of all time, even tho the Director committed homicide he was so upset over the studio interference.
I used to think Michel Biehn was the coolest guy in sci-fi. Big relationship with Sarah Connor. Pretty big hints at a (potential) relationship with Ellen Ripley. Then he showed up in The Abyss. Ignore how cute he is and read the warning signs, Mrs. Brigman!

I'm in the minority when it comes to this movie, because I think "Alien" is the superior of the two films. I do like this movie, it's just a different kind of movie.

This Movie So Fantastic And So Excited Since I Watched Behind The Scenes Of Aliens In Netflix
From a military stand point, here is why things went so bad so fast for them: they were taken by surprise and they had a weak Officer in Charge. You can see how well they actually fought considering how much damage they did back even as they retreated. Surprise attacks are a major linchpin in a great number of victories in history. Add the weak leadership of Gorman, and there you go.
Addition: Hudson. I love the character's growth. He was extremely humbled in the face of an unknown enemy. And yes, he whined and complained. But he trucked through; he did the work. And what I really love, is his end. When all the chips were on the table, he called in like a true warrior and fought to the bitter end for himself and his fellow Marines.
There's a fan theory that Burke specifically chose Gorman because of his inexperience, which would make him easier to manipulate. Take it or leave it.

A little late to the party here, but aside from all the other fun facts about Carrie Henn (Newt) that have been mentioned by others, are these two interesting ones: At the time of preproduction, Cameron's casting people were visiting various U.S. Air Force bases in England searching for someone to play Newt. The movie was filmed in England, and it was cheaper to check out students from US schools in England on the bases than it was to find someone in the States and bring them to England. Carrie's father was a Staff Sergeant in the USAF.
That's the first new fun fact. The second is that my weapons load crew chief (on a three-person bomb-loader crew) at RAF Lakenheath (U.S. airbase in England) had a daughter about the same age as Carrie, and was one of the casting people's top picks for Newt. In the end, she decided she didn't want to do it.
