I think one of the most important parts of this entire thing that's getting glossed over is the process here: They published comprehensive papers up front and are explicitly asking for replication and review by others around the world. This isn't the usual pattern of academic fraud or scammers trying to get rich or famous off a false breakthrough. They're not trying to keep anything secret, they're not trying to poison the well on critics, they're not even trying to get rich and famous up front by running to the media while avoiding scrutiny. They went straight to their fellow academics and WANT someone else to replicate their results.
This is how the scientific method is SUPPOSED to work. You don't "trust" in it or "believe" it, you actively try to disprove a claim from every angle you can think of starting first and foremost with attempting to do the same thing yourself. If you can do that then you start taking apart the entire thing piece by piece to figure out what's causing the outcome and why.
i mean they want clout, they just want to make sure that by the time they get this published normally, they dont get scooped. The real test now is if this is fake or real.
It's promising, but part of the scientific mindset is scepticism until proven, we need to see it proven by multiple independent (and often competing) parties. This is such a groundbreaking change that there is definitely incentive to lie your ass off, the upfront honesty is promising but means very little
It is also a good sign that they sound like they are fighting over the three slots for the Nobel. If I was scamming people I wouldn't be worried about a Nobel that I wasn't getting.
I hope it's true so badly.
well, yes, maybe, BUT:
They simply know this is noble prize worthy stuff. And since the production process is rather easy, it would have been trivial to ask someone they know to confirm their finding beforehand.
Simply to rule out any errors or whatever. Because if shown to be untrue, this would be a huge dent in their scientific career...
Oh well, I guess we'll hear about it in a couple of days/weeks

Back in like 2012, I was joking with my friends that "2020 is the beginning of the future". Considering the effects Covid had, it's reasonable to say that's pretty much on track, accounting for that slip up. Being within 5 years is pretty good, either way.

@@pstrap1311 No actually, even imperfect syntheses seem to be high temperature ambient pressure superconductors. There is also very interesting anomalous activity around RTAP that provides hope even with that imperfect replication. The process that was published is actually extremely poor currently due to the complex ways that Cu atoms have to be substituted in the lattice. The fact that even with this poor process, a *completely novel* HTAPSC was found indicates that there is a significant possibility that the L+K team actually struck gold and that the hard part may be replication of several one in a million chances. Jury's still out as always though.

Not just the reasons mentioned here but significant percentages of all energy produced is lost from simply transported it, if you can have superconductor transmission lines, it would greatly increase the available electricity and/or further reduce the need for fossil fuel based base load production
yeah but you see, you won't only need a superconductor that works on room temperature and room pressure, you would need one that's cheap and resistant to stress to put it in the power grid's cables, and that's like asking for the moon when you haven't figured out how wheels work yet
@@celivalg Indeed and this specific case, it is a type 2 superconductor with a bit of resistance. Anything more than a few dozen mill-amps and this material loses its superconductivity as it heats up. The power-lines would become huge bus-bars to transport any reasonable amount of power. Hmm, now if we could drive on them.... ;-)
@@DreadX10 Its not even verified whether its an actual superconductor or they made some mistakes. Labs around the world are verifying the results, we'll hear soon enough. Lets see if its reproducible
This is not true at all. High voltage transmission lines are already very efficient. The US grid is 95% efficient, for example, and it is one of the _least_ efficient power grids in the developed world due to how old and outdated it is.

Fireship manages to be funny and entertaining at the same time
i want to see a report about this that does not start with "imagine"
Why do I feel like most of the scientific world wants this to fail?
Everyone is tearing it apart instead of trying to make it work. Wtf is going on?
The stem cells achievement from Korea in 2000's determined as “scam” were “unfortunately” genuine. Korean scientist Hwang Woo-seok, who led the research at the time, was suddenly socially buried by instigation, and Dr. Satton, who assisted in the research, returned to the United States after that and established a stem cell research institute, and the United States has become a sacred place for stem cells centered on him to this day. Socially buried Korean scientist “Woo Seok, Hwang” is now employed by Mohamed Mansour to conduct research in United Arab Emirates. I highly suspect that the United States was involved in his ouster.
On the other hand, the late Professor Dong-Sik Choi, who planned and led the superconductor project research from the beginning, told the researchers not to disclose it until a certain year (I can't remember the exact year, but from now on), but for some reason, it was disclosed in the archive in advance. has become Nominally the disclosure by internal dissonance, which I find purely implausible and suspicious.

LK 99 does satisfy the lattice configuration for a Superconductor but I highly doubt it would satisfy the Cooper Pair condition since that's what actually makes Superconductors awesome. I am a Quantum Computer Scientist by the way.

"All evidence and application lead that lk-99 is the first room temperature and ambient pressure superconductor.
The lk-99 has many possibilities for various applications such as magnet, motor, cable, levitation train, power cable, qubit for quantum computer, THz antennas, etc.
We believe that our new development will be a brand new historical event that opens a new era for humankind."

Great
Thank god for this video. Straight to the point with facts. There’s another RUclipsr that made a 21 min video on this subject with nothing but filler nonsense
i think the material itself isn't actually the novel part of the (alleged) discovery, but rather the method of using the right kind of secondary element (in this case copper) to compress the atomic structure of some primary element (in this case lead) to create a stable quantum well to allow for superconductive properties to emerge
as far as i understand there is no reason for "LK-99" to be the "super material of the future", but rather just the combination of materials they used to (potentially) prove out this concept
my main concern (should this be real) is similar to what's holding back carbon nanotubes, where it's not that they don't exist, not that we can't create them, and not even that they don't have many amazing properties or hypothetical use-cases... but rather that creating them at scale or joining them into larger uniform pieces is not really feasible
but i like to stay cautiously optimistic about any potentially groundbreaking new tech:)
Sounds like you want woven carbon nano wire instead of tubes. Can't nano spider robots weave it for you?

Dumbass.
Even if the claim of this LK-99 is true, the paper itself states that it only works with relatively small magnetic field, you cannot push a lot of electricity into it to be that useful or else the superconductivity property will be lost. The material itself is ceramic, means that you cannot make a long transmission line using it. So even if the claim is true, the applications will be limited.
