Imagine: The German Wehrmacht and the US Army fighting together against the SS...too bad for a B-Movie? This is the Story that happened in April 1945. This really happened!

Also an SS Officer who stalled time for the prisoners by delaying the order to attack the castle.

There is supposedly a movie in production about this. Sepp Gangle was a straight up hero, though he did fight for the wrong side, he fought in almost every major front for that side. Only to WILLINGLY give up his life fighting (AT LITERALLY THE FINAL DAYS OF THE WAR) with his enemy to save those who could not save themselves. Imagine: You got through everything from France to literally STALINGRAD with the 6th army only to be shot in the head by a GERMAN to add onto this, he volunteered to do so just based on some random persons word. WHEN HE DID NOT EVEN HAVE TO DO ANYTHING. That shows the character of the man I am talking about here. The story is truly insane all around.

Don’t forget that they were protecting French prisoners in a castle in Austria

I mean former enemies fighting together in an actual genuine medieval castle against overwhelming odds and an enemy that is as close to evil as you can get. A German soldier who gives his life for a hostage and a former SS officer who seeks redemption. The phone line is cut off just as they get the coordinates to reinforcements. I mean this has blockbuster written all over it. Not to mention a tank named Jenny and a tennis player who leads the reinforcements to the castle I mean cmon lol

I recommend watching Sabaton History about this song cause its one of the most interesting stories of ww2
TLDR: A U.S. Army captain, 2 German officers one of them an SS officer, a handful of German and American soldiers and French prisoners defending Castle Itter against the SS who were ordered to kill the French prisoners.

There is actually a similar story called operation cowboy. In occupied Czechoslovakia German scientists were trying to breed an "Arian" horse called lipizzaner. The area they were in was in the path of the Soviet forces who earlier killed more lipizzaners in another ranch, so fearing for the horses the head of the project contacted US 2nd armored cavalry group to come behind enemy lines and rescue the horses. Just over 300 men and a few light tanks escorted the nearly 200 horses for over 20 miles while fending off Waffen SS units.

@DR_REDACTED Technically the last two battles of the war were the Battle of Poljana, may 14th to 15th, 1945 in which the Yugoslavian 3rd and 4th army captured a column of 30,000 waffen SS, Heer, Ustase and other collaborators and the Battle of Odžak which lasted from April 19th to May 25th, almost 17 days after Germanys surrender and resulted in the collapse of Independent Croatia
