  • Mike is back to break down auction results and what they say about the current watch market. With Patek Philippe, F.P. Journe and Rexhep Rexhepi watches performing well both at Only Watch and Geneva auctions, Mike discusses what this means for the general auction scene and rare watches versus commodity pieces. He also looks at Cartier's continous growing strength in this episode of Market Wrap.

I meet Rexhepi while grocery shopping in Geneva. We talked during an unexpected long time and shared experiences about life and business. As there was no language barrier, I can assure you, contrary to many of his peers, he is true nice and humble person. The way he talked to my young son was genuine and intelligent. I am a big fan and happy for these results!

Does anyone else feel like Rexhep watches are over rated?
They are undoubtedly brilliant, but each fetching over a million dollars is insane

I’m surprised OnlyWatch went on after all their shenanigans and “reports” that had to be cooked up after questions started being asked

While Only Watch 2024 wasn't by any means a flop, I don't think we can legitimately consider it a big success by any measure. This 2024 version featured 47 lots and raised CHF 28,320,000 whereas in 2021there were 53 lots and the event raised CHF 30,000,000 (29,740,000 via the lots and 260,000 via a donation in the room to round out the number). I think it says a lot that 2024 raised less money despite significant inflation since 2021. And the fewer lots was a direct result of the scandal related to the charity's operation. Fifteen additional lots were expected back when this event was to happen in 2023 so quite a few did not return, for whatever reason.
Charity auctions like this never want to move backwards in funding raised at cornerstone events. I think this result gives them confidence they have saved the auction from themselves for future years but this year will always have a black mark on it.

I read that one whale (who bought the previous PP) was not bidding which ended being a big impact on the final numbers.

This comment section heavily supports the quote that Americans view themselves as "temporarily embarrassed millionaires", in regards to defending outrageous pricing for FPJ and the likes. I enjoy independent watchmaking a lot, but the commenters jumping at any criticism by saying that someone is poor or needs to go back to wearing G shocks in walmart, are really embarassing

No offense to Watch Box (now the 1916 company), as I enjoy their videos and will continue to watch the reviews - but the commentary of these million-plus dollar timepiece listings at auctions is boring to me. A "darling" - to me anyway - is a timepiece you can get and something you would wear in public. To the others, I don't fawn. I yawn. Making pieces that go into vaults are vanity projects for the elite - and not only makes me cringe but makes me reconsider wanting to continue my relationship with those brands. That's just me...

Issue with FPJ is his personality and the succession... It is a risk. Remember Frank Muller drama... From extraordinary to sad watches... Today nobody want to touch such a watch, even the masterpieces of the start...
