Books about combat are compelling. There's an inherent thirst for the stories about brave men, completing impossible tasks under the worst of conditions. Cry Havoc tells the story of how the Army Rangers emerged from the shadow of the Vietnam War, and morphed themselves into what World War II hero and former commander of US forces in Vietnam General Creighton W. Abrams called, "the finest light infantry in the world." In October of 1983, those men would conduct the first mass combat parachute drop since Vietnam and do so under intense fire from Cuban and Grenadian forces.
Once the Rangers hit the ground, the action didn't stop. Over three days, they cleared the enemy from commanding positions overlooking the airfield, rescued over 400 US medical students, and conducted an air assault on an enemy training facility, an action that was considered a 'suicide mission'. And yet they accomplished all of their missions in the best tradition of their Ranger forefathers.

SCMU DEVGRU teammates drowned joint stacked munitions on us prior to insertion. I was one of the 2 survivor downrange. Storm. I'm glad Rangers led the way.
I was the fortunate recipient of training (in basic), from a 173rd Vietnam vet, his commander, a 7th Group Vietnam vet, and a 1SG who was 4th ID Vietnam vet. I've had so many intersections with history since that I don't know how much of my history was constructed. Adapt, Improvise, Overcome. Thank you.
That's exactly what my Dad always told me. He was a Veteran of the Korean War.
This is great gents. I had some amazing leaders who were Grenada Rangers. They ran a totally different ship with unit culture, where we took things seriously and trained very smart, and harder than in other units.
These would go really well with some MTO&E charts and weapons & equipment visuals.
I went through some entry level OGA training with SGM Kelly Venden (Ret.). He was the SMU dude who got shot in the chest on the Kurt Muse rescue. He was very quiet about his military career. He didn’t throw around he was CAG. I know he is more open now about his experiences. You should ask him to come on the show! SGM Spizzo too! He too was a Panama Ranger all the way up to GWOT in a leg unit!
Outstanding Joe and Team House!! Thanks for capturing 'recent' history for those of us blessed to live through it. RLTW...!!!
This is fantastic book and wonderful discussion about it.
Rangers did a lot of crazy stuff in the 80's; stories I've never seen told publicly, and this is one of them. Glad to see some of this stuff is being told now.
I was reminded by one of the 1st Batt guys, they did not take 'war guns', only 2nd Batt. Apologies for any confusion on that. Best, Joe
Always evolving.
Lessons learned.
Benefiting from experience.
Dedicated to the mission.
Love the old battalion scroll(s). I washed out of the SFQC in early '84. We had a bunch of Rangers in the class and they were AWESOME leaders. I ended up in the 24Tth ID so we had guys from Hunter AAF, all solid guys.
Wonderful interview, guys!
Great guest.
I hope does a book about the Rangers when they went into Panama.
Awesome
Those runways were being lengthened to accommodate the big Russian transports to ferry Cuban troops to Angola & elsewhere. Cuba had the largest army in Africa at the time.

RANGERS LEAD THE WAY
Great show - why not pre-record ad reads and add them in during post-editing? Seems bit janky to read them mid interview
Yes! They could say, “we’ll be right back after this message from our sponsors.” Megan Kelly does this on her show.
We don't do post editing as the show is live streamed.
@@TheTeamHousePodcastdidn’t think about that?
@@TheTeamHousePodcast makes sense! Love the show!
Sounds like a good book. Did you get a chance to talk to Scott Underdonk who was a medic in 2nd BN? I knew Scott when he was in the WVNG B/2/19SF before he left for active duty with the RGR BN.
Great! When you talk to him again, tell him that Charles McComas says hello. I was in the SFQC during Grenada. After a bit of bouncing around, I came back to 2/19SF finishing out on ODB1960 where I was fortunate to do a OEF1 deployment.
Grenada seemed to have some similarities with The 2022 Ukraine invasion. Russia was not able to bring in their Jet transport of troops and hardware. The airfield needed to land the jets. Was initially denied by Ukrainian Nat. Guard and some Cops. That probably saved Kiev !
👍

I love how former soldiers post on here about how they can “ relate “ to these soldiers yet…. You fell out in the end. Cool story guys. Keep it to your fucking self! You’re not one of them so quit trying to indirectly make these amazing stories about you not having enough fortitude.
