    When you play "scales with no melody" you sound amazing!

    • @94SexyStang
      @94SexyStang 9 лет назад +15

      JoelMetal Exactly, it sounded GOOD! Yes there was no tone depth applied to it, just speed....but it sounds good depending on the Style you're playing. If you're playing Ozzy, you need some Soul in it, but just playing "modern metal crap", you just need speed.

    • @johnnyRandomadness
      @johnnyRandomadness 8 лет назад +8

      +Mike Fu modern metal crap, that expression seems a bit biased and ignorant man, if this "modern metal crap" doesn't interest you, that's fine, but it could interest and mean more too somebody else. It sounded good, but the point wasn't that it doesn't sound good or cool to play, it's boring and expressionless, and if you don't learn how to write melody , you just won't develop a unique characteristic too yourself as a player.

      I dont feel there is a right or wrong way to anything (except being out tune and fail on bends).
      Its just as bad to overuse bends and vibratos than not using them at all. You all look to much on these guys and you will all sound the same in the end :P

      lol what about people who aren't guitar players but do listen to music? you've already cut yourself out of a big part of the "market" by limiting your audience to just guitar players, but then again that's your business and not mine. I actually enjoy listening to fast playing when it actually fits the part and doesn't sound like "I don't know what to play so I'll try and play all the available notes in two bars". Regarding my own skills no, I don't play fast yet tho I'm working on it cause I like it.

      Mikey Gio i guess you tried to give a smart answer without even seeing the point i was making. And bad readers cant be good writers. The point is music you play (or anyone plays) is played for others. The purpose of the musician is to serve others good music. You might like it when you play fast. Other people (the people youre playing for) might get bored after the fourth bar of our 80notepersecond waffling. So actually you must be able to play that fast to "give a good service" sometimes, but its far more important to know how to serve the song (which is what the video guy actually points at in his tips) and when its time to shut the fuck up.

    • @sgim43
      @sgim43 7 лет назад

      +Juan Carlos Suarez don't you just love the internet and how half the people like to make up their own interpretation rather than even remotely pay attention to what they're reading and what's being said? I just got off another site reading responses to feedback I left for a major company not accepting automatic payments when they have the capability, and everyone's responding things like "oh so it's their fault you're bad with money", "can't remember to pay", " financially irresponsible", etc etc when that had nothing to do with anything I was saying and are actually completely incorrect...

    I actually liked some of the sound you got when playing with "poor" pitch control. Maybe it's not appropriate for all styles of music, but that kind of cracked out dissonance worked for me in a way.

    • @dingeskerz
      @dingeskerz 9 лет назад

      Jaspertine Yeah you're right :) Sounds cool in some genres.

    • @OljeiKhan
      @OljeiKhan 8 лет назад

      +Jaspertine Yeah in some styles you can bend slightly over the pitch you want or slightly lower. For example when playing the blues , you might want to bend your 7th to the 1st a little sharp if you want that kinda sound. It has it's time and place.
      But you definitely need to learn to play BY the rules before you go apeshit and break all the rules.
      Cheers!!

      As a side note to this issue.. I don't think it's so bad when we can't pull off a great solo when improvising, being put on the spot is difficult and so there will be an element of 'meandering'. But when we actually sit down to compose, that's when it really counts. We can take the time to get it right.

    Great playing and dug your lesson on vibrato, but as I've gotten older I see vibrato as more of an effect and I prefer not to have it 'on' all the time and when I do, I prefer it more subtle than most. I love the tension that some notes have the move in and just die out with sustain. I think I may be the only one though. I mean, I agree, no one should have vibrato off pitch or out of time, I just disagree that "no vibrato" is necessarily a bad thing.

    • @BenHigginsOfficial
      @BenHigginsOfficial  9 лет назад +3

      I agree with you. I think it should be a choice.. some notes do sound great left as they are and when you do use vibrato, it's really noticed.

    I think Tony Iommi is great for beginning guitar players because BS songs are pretty easy, fun, sound good, plus you learn to use pentatonic scales across the neck with some blues notes and harmonic minor thrown in as well. Plus, he has some good vibrato and trilling to emulate even though his solos can become really repetitive (across separate songs).

    That point on picking dynamics really intrigued me, especially when I thought the solo without picking dynamics sounded perfectly okay. Would you mind explaining a bit more?
    I really appreciate your touching on vibrato, as I notice many shredders have either poor (weak, non-existent, forceful or untimed) or unremarkable vibrato. The shredders (or technical players) who, to me, have good/great/deliberate vibrato are Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and riffguy (from RUclips). Non-shredders seem to pay more attention to their vibrato.
    Liking your work more and more - thank you for existing!

    • @BenHigginsOfficial

      +Mirza Sutresno Hi Mirza. Yes, you're right. The solo without it was fine. It's just to give an audible difference so people can hopefully hear it themselves :) If you only ever played by picking exactly the same then you will miss out on the opportunity to add some more interesting touches like pinch harmonics, rakes, staccato sounding notes etc.

    • @Razwithz
      @Razwithz 9 лет назад +1

      +Mirza Sutresno Also called articulation is the opposite of good clean picking. It's everything you are not supposed to do when you are practicing, different picking strength, different picking angle, scratching noises, accidental harmonics, etc. The trick is to do it in purpose and once you have mastered perfect, constant, clean picking. If you manage to do that it will sound pretty good because it makes whatever you are playing to feel more alive and expressive.

      +Ražha Strel thank you for sharing the knowledge with me :-) although I've been playing for over 20 years, I've never taken formal lessons, save for the lessons and tabs in guitar mags (before RUclips existed) which I occasionally studied.
      Therefore there are many terms in guitar playing that I've never heard of, and developed a way of playing which could be further improved. Great thing we have RUclips now!
      Thanks again!

    Ηοwever, seasoned players can play with the rhythm to great effect: Slash (master of that "behind-the-beat", laid back feel), Vinnie Moore and Marty Friedman (grooving in-between) and of course Jeff Beck.
    Marty also has a great short clip somewhere on YT in which he talks about choosing where and how to use vibrato. And although each player has a trademark vibrato, varying it according to a particular section's/tune's needs shows great control and phrasing awareness.
    But I get all your points and agree with them. Great video! :)

    Playing in front of the beat, or catching up to the beat may be used as a deliberate artistic choice. Syncopation can give some life to an otherwise dry and sterile line of notes.

    I don't know, I really liked the "no melody" solo, the other one was nice, but this one was more intricate and interesting to play, I enjoyed it more than the other one..and the "no dynamics" solo was nice as well..like one of the oher comments said, it depends on what are you playing and how do you want to play it

  • @growtogether
    @growtogether 9 лет назад

    Nothing wrong with scale runs...if you're a beginner, learning the scales. But agreed, one must be conscious about it and strive to be creative, making music. I'm still in the proces of learning how to do that. What I find helpful is 'singing' a short phrase in my head and than trying to play it on guitar, in different places on the neck. or just simple melodies like Amazing Grace ;) But, yeah, most important thing is listening to music. The basic rule is simple: if you can't hear it, you can't play it.
    My guess: most players play patterns (scales, riifs, licks) on guitar and listen to how it sounds, few players hear music in their head and play what they hear.

  • @TheThinker39
    @TheThinker39 6 лет назад

    These are great ideas, and I agree with you; however, as others have said, you make even the examples of poor soloing sound good. Part of it is the great tone of your guitar and the endless sustain you have on tap. Maybe you have already done this in another video, but it would be interesting if you showed us your entire signal chain, from the string to the speaker, explaining why you have done everything in that chain and what each thing contributes to the sound.

    i've been playing two years and I've really caught myself trying to find short cuts, and I've watched my creativity atrophy as a result. Truthfully, as far as I can tell, it seems like your creativity or as I call it guitar "Swag" requires upkeep above all. And its the most fun to do anyways! I found myself forgetting that some of the most beautiful music I've heard is pretty god damn simple...

    • @BenHigginsOfficial
      @BenHigginsOfficial  9 лет назад +1

      Collin Glover Yeah it is tempting to look ahead and want to get to all the flash stuff but it will comes in time, if it's meant to be part of your sound. If there ever was a 'short cut' at all it would be honing into what most floats your boat as you will always make more progress by focusing on what you enjoy and what you're naturally good at.

    • @driftwood757
      @driftwood757 9 лет назад

      BenHigginsOfficial Good point man. As a noob I can say your videos are awesome. Breaking down technique and philosophy in ways that are easily understood! Thank you sir. With that said, is it bad that I'm studying a lot of music theory? I hear some people say it inhibits your creativity to learn it too early, but I just want to have an idea of where I can go next because I write stuff that I like a lot but don't know how to complete it. If I were to request a video from you, it'd be about that and how to practice actual song writing.

      I mean I'm not rushing myself with it, I'm really just trying to understand minor and major scale formulas and also of course the caged system because it seems pretty promising so far.

  • @nickwaters1701
    @nickwaters1701 7 лет назад

    1. If you rush a lot as fast as you can, that's a problem, but if you rush some a little, as long as you try hard not to, it'd be fine.
    2. Poor pitch when bending strings would be bending the string way out of key and you don't know how to do it right.
    3. Poor vibrato would be use the vibrato when the note out of tune. Also, going too fast or too slow isn't really the idea.
    4. Absolutely
    5. If you rarely practice or don't practice picking, then yes.

    A lot of singers seem to have a problem with vibrato. It's all about using it effectively and correctly. Sometimes the best vibrato is no vibrato.

    • @BenHigginsOfficial
      @BenHigginsOfficial  10 лет назад +1

      Yes, sometimes the problem is people overusing vibrato.. heavy wide vibrato on every damn note !

    • @BenHigginsOfficial

      I have the same philosophy as well.. I think also Gilmour said something similar. But regardless of the source, it's good advice. Vibrato should be a choice of expression, not a knee jerk reaction.

    Man... Even when you try to suck you're awesome man
    I agree with most stuff, but also the only thing I REEALLY think that is really really bad is the badly done vibratos and the out of tune bends (although sometimes it can sound cool)
    The tips I see here I think they're most only REALLY essential in a solo

    So shredding through scales = bad and more string bending every other note = good? Sounds like a preference to me.

    Wouldn't vibrato partly depend on the genre? When it comes to jazz guitar, vibrato is either subtle or non-existent. I've also noticed David Gilmour, especially when using a tremolo, makes his vibrato a bit slower.

    The scale runs... I gotta say man I know it's not your thing and you don't think it sounds good. But I really really love that shit.
    Paul Gilbert/Buckethead/MAB/Yngwie. Idk what it is it feels more natural to hear it, though I'll admit I try to step out of those boundaries recently.

    • @BenHigginsOfficial
      @BenHigginsOfficial  8 лет назад +2

      +Georgi Dobrev If it's done well it's ok. I'm not against using scale runs.. we all use scales after all and I've got loads of runs in my own music. I'm talking more about meandering scale runs that go back and forth, using every interval from point A to B. Those guys you mentioned are good at picking target notes and making a statement with the runs.

      Agreed man, cheers for the reply.
      I think it's very important to keep a sense of variety in one's playing. I've been learning that over the last year.
      Regardless, great tutorials and great channel!

    when you speak of dynamics, does that include pinch harmonics and those types of subtleties? or does in mostly mean the velocity in which you strike the strings?

      You would be surprised how many experienced players exhibit several of these issues. Even some famous players I could think of, but won't name, have awful timing and vibrato, not to mention every picked note sounds the same. ;)
