    I love mid weight videos. Feels much more approachable and down to earth. Lightweight seems cool, but I think you just need to be a very avid backpacker to justify a lot of the gear. This set up seems very reasonable and much more like something a newbie could accomplish.

      Exactly what I was going for. Ultralight works great for some people who are trying to crush miles and hike long distances, but a kit like this is great for a majority of people, and still lighter than many others. Thanks for watching!

      @@justinhitsthetrail5225 Absolutely! Keep up the good work. It’s great entertainment for those of us stuck at a desk just waiting for a chance to crush a 10-15 mile total weekend trip!

    I rarely see anyone rocking granite gear, i have had 5 of their packs, and i love them all. they are mid ground of lightweight and comfy

    looks good. A strat taught to many is just smush the sleeping bag on the bottom of the pack without the compression bag straps. Keeps everything from shaking around and keeps the sleeping bag from losing more insulation value from over compression.

    I am getting my gear dialed in but somehow I am at 20lbs still. I think since I am a big guy my clothes add a lot. When the weight for a shirt or paints say 7oz it’s for a medium so my 2xl-3xl weight double or more so mine are 12-16oz. It adds up quick. But I also have more layers. Anyway I liked your load out. Gives me some ideas to lighten mine. Thanks 😊

    Love that picture in your background.
    I have a lot of the same gear. I enjoyed the video. Keep them coming 👍🏻
    P.S. I’m more of a tequila guy than whisky. I’m from Kentucky and the Bourbon just about killed me in my twenties 😂

      Haha I’m from Arizona so Tequila has about killed me! Smooth Irish whiskey for me! Thank you for the compliment! 🍻

      well thats an easy problem. They make real good bourbon in Tenn, too. totally different over there. Nobody likes a quitter. signed way to close to the border for tequila

    I love my GG Drop 40. Too bad they don't seem to carry it anymore. New sub btw! Good job.

      I haven’t tried the Drop 40. I would like to get a 40 or 45 liter pack though. For short trips I have a lot of extra space in this pack. Thanks for watching! 🍻

    Nice review.
    It would be nice if Granite Gear would make the Blaze 60 with a roll down top vs the tie cord. Would be better if you plan to remove the lid or carry lid on chest.

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  3 года назад

      That would be a nice feature. Though, if you’re not maxing out the capacity there usually is enough fabric that you can cinch it, roll it down, and buckle it. Basically use it like a roll top. If you’re fully loaded though, then yeah that wouldn’t work. Thanks for checking out the video! Cheers

    I am concerned about use in temperatures above 25°C/77°F (up to 35°C/95°C). Have you used it at these temperatures? I've also considered Osprey Exos 58 and Gregory Focal 58 but my average max load of 35lbs maybe is too much. I've thought about Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 40-60 but the torso length is fixed.

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  2 года назад +1

      Used it above 25c quite a bit. It’s been above that on several backpacking trips here in AZ. Even out on the JMT last summer there were a handful of days warmer than that and had no problems!

    Forget the dyneema get ultra 100 by ecopack stonger, lighter and waterproof

  • @trytheoutdoors

    Great job. Thank you. I note you avoid using individual stuff sacks ( apart from the sleeping bag) presumably to save weight. Did you therefore have a waterproof liner inside the ruck sack? And do you use a waterproof outer cover for the rucksack?
    Here in the UK, one has to guard against rain 24/7!!!!

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  3 года назад +1

      Sorry for the late reply. Just got back from my JMT hike! Here in Arizona rain isn’t much of a concern, so I usually don’t use a liner or cover. However, if I’m going somewhere where rain is in the forecast or on a longer trip, I use a nylofume pack liner. No outer cover.

    Hey Justin thanks for the video. Thats a pretty good and bad setup you got. I share a similar problem. You went out and bought some pretty nice gear that added up to that 15lb weight. Which actually isn't too bad like you said. but typically we all fail after the base weight and blow it up with food that we call consumable and that 3 liter whiskey bottle you carry. Boom 30 lbs. It's really really tough to justify moving to the next level. You have a top of the line tent in the nylon world - your bag seemed nice enough. Im sitting with a 10 degree bag (I hike in the sierras) that is 22 ozs. How do I tell my wife Im spending 300.00 on a sleeping bag to save 5 ozs (it was as much about space). Because my wife does come along sometimes, I have a two person tent (Duplex) picture this "honey the 19 oz tent I bought two years ago for 600.00 is two big, I need the one man for only 500.00 more" ..are you kidding, that is a divorce in the making and she may even hire someone to beat me up. I braved up and did just downsize my pack at a very reasonable price. Im chasing the elusive 20 lbs all in (with a bear can).
    Unsolicited advice to get you slower - you must lose that sleeping pad and stuff sack and blow up toy, your a grown ass man. that is some real space and weight there. I say Nemo Tenser insulated mummy. And then you gotta lose weight in that pack - I say this because its not too expensive to really drop weight there. From what you said maybe you still prefer a roomy pack. I would highly recommend taking a look at Gossamer gear. If you need 60 liters then the mariposa is golden. I just replaced it with the G4-20 from them for solo trips. The mariposa comes in at about 2 lbs and an oz or two. carries 30 lbs as well as it carries 23. The price point made it impossible for me to look elsewhere. That 15 lbs doesn't have to be more than 23ish if you properly stare at your pile long enough. The whiskey is always the shame I carry without weighing

    Loved this. I have a similar setup. A couple of observations. You could try a Lanshan Pro 1 or 2 tent for cost effective weight savings. I noticed you don't carry a change of clothes? I carry one complete set. But I am a former boy scout - be prepared and all. And helps with the hygiene. I noticed you don't carry any sleep clothes. I use a sleeping bag liner with a tshirt and separate underwear in the summer, and a set of leggings and long sleeve sun hoodie in the winter. That way my sleeping clothes are always "clean" and non-smellable. Sun hoodie works great for sleeping - keeps my greasy sweaty face off the pillow. Finally, I noticed that you don't carry any think like bear bag line, camp shoes (for when you need a backup or just to dry out your hiking footwear). And you don't carry rain pants or a rain skirt? What about a phone for navigation? Compass? Paper maps and map case? Foldable saw? Poop kit (Toilet paper, compressed wipes and a trowel)? Ferro rod and some kind of firestarter (I like Vaseline cotton because easy to ignite with a ferro spark). All of these are NOT criticisms. I'm asking about these because these items add additional weight. I consider at least some of them necessary. I think this is one of the reasons why I have trouble getting my base weight really low. Anyway your video was awesome and inspirational thank you!!!
