You should watch all of Kleber Mendonça Filho's films. Brazil is famous for the quality of its short films, you should react to some of them. Kleber Mendonça was a film critic in Pernambuco and currently one of the most important and famous filmmakers in the country. He has exquisite short films that are well-known throughout Brazil. I recommend two that he made available to start, RECIFE FRIO (2009), an Argentine TV program about the curious climate change in the city of Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco. And Vinil Verde (2006) is a children's fable, a film made only of photographs (photograms) like in La Jateé (1962, Chris Marker). You've already seen enough of Brazil from the films you've watched to understand these.

Okay I said I wasn't gonna comment but one thing I like about this movie is that the gringos probably chose this little town because they see people from that region as uncivilized, people that no one would miss, see them as lesser. But in a way, that little community treats their elderly with care, they share food and medicine, they don't allow greedy politicians in because they have their own way of living - and in many ways this little community is more civilized, political and organized and put together than many other places in the world.

This movie is a whole metaphor, everything is a metaphor about how the "first world" plays with the lifes of the "second" and "third world". They treat their lifes as if they're just pieces in a game. Those two Brazilian assassins from the foreign group are from a rich region in Brazil where they think they're from the first world, but at the end they're just some third world people as well. The museum where the history of the people from bacurau is shown is about the "cangaceiros" a group of people from the northeast Brazil that was known for their violence. They are portraid by some as heros and by some as criminal. The names spoken at the end when they're counting the victims are from real people killed in Brazil due to the effects of these control and manipulation from the rich.

As a local, from where the movie was shotted and the director is from, the things the most gets me are the demographic layers.
I mean, this movie makes clear that the Americans thinks they’re superior than the Brazilians, as the Brazilians from the south (white Brazilians) think they’re superior than the people from the northeast (where the movie happens and I live).
Creating characters apparently stupids from a small village in the middle of nowhere, but making them using technology in sense of community, and also being aware of their history (they had a museum) for me it’s genius!
Ps: Lia de Itamaraca, whose plays Carmelita, is a great singer. I recommend listening to her.

Best way to describe this is as a “Brazilian Weird Western”. It directly makes a spin on US movies from the Western genre, picking the same general narrative but placing it in a Brazilian Northeast environment and context.
There’s the small town in danger of foreign invaders (Very often Native Americans in US movies, or other non-white foreign enemies tropes) but this time they are the White Americans themselves.
That’s basically it, you don’t need any deeper meaning tbh. There is some slight social criticism that some political background might help elevate (ex: the White Brazilians siding with the White foreigners instead of their own people; US/European imperialism and revolutionary themes) but that’s just something extra.
Regarding your question, the mayor simply wanted to exploit the village for money. The Gringo “tourists” paid to be able to do that and for the mayor it’s easier to get rid of a small town nobody knows of and that is electorally hostile against him while getting some easy cash in return. It was supposed to be a win-win for him.
Notice how the German Gringo screams for his money back in the end? “Dinero!!” is what he screams at the mayor.
I really like Bacurau but I strongly think “Aquarius” is the better movie from the director! Please watch it one day!

This film refers to the era of cangaço, a banditry movement exclusively from the Northeast, with its origins recorded in the colonial period and its end in the 20th century. The cangaceiros were the pioneers of this movement, they were nomadic and very bloodthirsty criminals, something similar to the bandits of the Old West, pirates and Vikings. And despite being criminals, they shaped and indirectly influenced northeastern culture in many of its aspects, such as art, music, poetry, crafts, aesthetics and clothing.

It is a comedy about the arrival of the first Europeans in the territory that is now Brazil, and the relationships with the original peoples. And it tells the story the marriage between Diogo Álvares Correia, a portuguese man who was on a ship spank off the cost of Bahia ( supposedly ), and Paraguaçu, a woman from Tupinamba Nation.

Bacurau (both the film and the city) is a fiction. There are elements that make reference to the context of the Northeast of Brazil, an underestimated region that sometimes suffers prejudice from the southeast of the country. The motorcycle scene reflects this view that the South of Brazil sometimes has of the Northeast, when the couple tries to convince the "tourists" that they are more like them, than their own people.
I understand the film as a story of resistance and protagonism that represents the history of this region. Not only that, but the symbolism of education, culture, memory as a form of revolution and of keeping the identity of this place alive even in the face of situations in which other countries try to appropriate them and treat them as inferior to the point of dehumanizing those people, being able to kill them for fun.
Interestingly, in an interview with director Kleber Mendonça, a person from a European country (I don't remember which one) asked him why he chose to treat the "tourists" like villains. And Kleber replied: why not?
I think Bacurau provokes this inversion that the hollywood most of the time doesn't do. Some sides are generally used to being the good guys in the story. It is important that they realize that the other side also exists.

As someone born and raised on the very state where (part of) Bacurau was filmed, I love this movie because even amongst the Brazilian movies/series we rarely see the beauty of the region :3 a lot of Brazilians think the Northeast is just desert and poverty, but there's beautiful plants, and of course a beautiful culture. Growing up I visited the place they used for Lunga's hideout every vacation and I never expected to ever see it in such a good, internationally acclaimed movie. I can imagine it's hard to get the references of the movie without knowing the region's story, but it's also very interesting to listen to your point of view! Keep up the good work! ❤

The thing about the Northeast of Brazil is that it's been overexploited by the richer Southeast of Brazil and most of our regional cultural expressions will talk about that in a way or another, it's still a big sore spot for the nation. In the Northeast we have a social phenomena called "Cangaço", where in the 18-19th century the people took up arms and fought the repressive new republican forces, you can find a figure called Lampião in O Auto da Compadecida and the many pictures of Cangaceiros in the museum scene of Bacurau: it does have a meaning, they're the descendants of Cangaceiros, doing what they've always done - protecting the land and the people.

My top 3 in Brazilian films. I love. Great reaction. It is a film that brings metaphors and different elements to discuss politics, society, human sordidness, collective strength, one can then see the distortion in the cultural identification of Brazilians, fascism, surrenderism, racism, domination, bathed in philosophy and history. It is an ecstatic experience for better and for worse.
Despite being set in a future or timeless space, the film is very current. The first part of the film perhaps causes more strangeness, as it contains the main point of revelation of our regionalism, culture, and contemplative way of telling the story of those characters and especially that city, Bacurau. Then, when the second half arrives, the foreigners and their technologies enter the scene, trying to tie together a plot with American traits and molds (on purpose), making the public immediately identify with it, including all the violence.

@s337fm 6 месяцев назад +10

• @s337fm
@s337fm 6 месяцев назад +1

Lots of people already talked about the metaphors to colonialism and imperialism in Bacurau, I also want to bring another aspect regarding the people's reaction tho the americans killing: this is the resistence of the invisible ones. Also, in the beginning of the past century, this region was plaged by bandit groups who used to raid entire cities killing and looting (cangaço). The people of Bacurau knows very well how to defend themselfes.

Thanks for the video, Mr. Madvision! Very Good! I think you will enjoy very much "Uma História de Amor e Fúria", a (very serious but enchanting) brazilian animation that shows five interlinked stories that runs along 4 centuries, from the arrival of the Portuguese to the futiristc XXI century Brazil. It's very beautiful and emotional. Sometimes it remembers me the japanese tradition fot serious themes animations (Gibli Studios, for example).

I was little bit anxious about this one, I was sure you would like it too; so it was disappointing when you told you'd already seen it before. Just to regain all happiness when you recognised you might had forgotten most of the movie - and clearly shown that was the case. Then it was just as good as a first reaction, probably 'cause you were too young to understand or even grasp more meaning from it at that time.
I guess that "cartoonish" moment on the dinner room, that one that annoyed you, was at the beggining what we could call "a didatic scene": when dialogues and facts are not quite realistic, but can be very "didatic" about the plot, showing some meaningful aspects would be hard to tell otherwise. In this case, white brazilians are infantilised in front of others, caucasians, once there are several brazilians that see theirselves "as (good as) europeans or americans" in a very racist way, categorizing and hierarchizing races, people, genders, cultures etc. This is a real thing here and the end of the scene shows it in a very graphic manner.
• @s337fm
@s337fm 6 месяцев назад
This 'didatism' is also in the scene when Claudio and his wife try to go to another place and get murdered by hitmans. You said right before "What's the point of all of this!?" and that they and their lines don't seems real at that time; well: this is one of the key aspects on symbolism. Brazil (and Americas and OCeania in general, soon later Africa and Asia too) were expoliated for centuries from world potencies. What was the point of slavery, genocide and forced convertion, specially for those who were native or was brought here in lame ships? You see: the message is way more important then the realism here, but also the reality itself seems just... surreal!
Another point: Lunga enbodies a "nowadays cangaceiro", an archaic type of "hero bandit" from late 1800 up to 1940's northeastern Brazil. To explain this reference is tricky, due to be a very specific thing from here - but you can think them as popular outlaws, a little bit like in westerns.
