THIS was my FAVORITE cereal. I have some great memories of Capt Crunch. And I couldn't stop eating Urkle O's (they were gross but addictive for some reason). And in high school i rocked Cocoa Pebbles and Oreo O's (stupid marshmallows). But it was always about the Croonchy Stars. Long live the Chef!
At the time, "The Jim Henson Hour" was popular on TV, and "The Muppets Christmas Special" was still very popular. So, yes, the Swedish Chef was still very relevant in 1988.
My favorite muppet is Ralph the dog as I remember in the muppet babies show he loved to play music also he reminds me of my guide dog Rolf!! Thank you for posting this video gaberial love it
I looked this cereal up on your site wondering if you had it. I worked in a grocery store as a teenager at the time when it came out, and as a huge Muppet fan, I remember taking a box of cereal into the breakroom to read it, because it was so hilarious. I did buy a box or two when it was around and I remember it being good, but the box was what I remembered the most.
I just opened up a box of Kashi Cinnamon French Toast and the smell took me right back to Croonchy Stars. If anyone misses that obscure taste from their childhoods, pickup a box of Kashi Cinnamon French Toast. It’s practically the same.
I never tried Croonchy Stars back in the day, but based on a random comment I read from someone, he mentioned after decades of searching, that he found a cereal that tastes exactly like Swedish Chef's Croonchy Stars with the same great taste and crunch. And that cereal is Nature's Path Organic Cinnamon Jungle Munch. I currently eat Cinnamon Jungle Munch and love it, though I can't confirm if it really tastes exactly like Croonchy Stars. So you, or anyone who reads this who has had Croonchy Stars in the past, give Nature's Path Organic Cinnamon Jungle Munch a try sometime if you haven't already. I figured I'd mention this to those who used to love Croonchy Stars and now searching for a similar alternative.
That wasn’t available in the US. It was “Choco bambon maizoro” cereal from Mexico and it featured muppet babies on the front, but it wasn’t technically a Muppet Babies cereal and it wasn’t available here. Any boxes you see with the “Muppet Babies Cereal” on the front are photoshopped.
They brought back the Muppet Babies in 2018, and in one of the episodes, Swedish Chef returned as a new Muppet baby, along with other famous Muppets. Of course, Statler and Waldorf were the only Muppets who did not get turned into babies. I still don't know how or why not.
if cookie monster invented a new cereal, I wonder what it would be like. as for who my favorite muppet is, there are 2 of them. one is a little purple bird who sang a song to kermit about her parents living in different places and the other is a golden yellow horse who was in a sesame street segment where ernie sang a song titled "imagine that". the horse is in the part of the song where ernie sang about being a knight in shining armor.
I don't know if they only sold this cereal in selective markets or what I swear I never remember seeing this in stores when I was a kid or saw any commercials for it. Maybe I just missed this one. My favorite muppet will always be Kermit. After that it's Beaker, Animal, and Swedish Chef. I remember in the 80's SNL had a running skit that put together Tonto, Tarzan, and Frankenstein (Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, and Phil Hartman) recently Muppets have been doing ones with Beaker, Animal, and Swedish Chef and it's funny in just about the same way.
Regarding the Chef's popularity at the time of Croonchy Stars, I'd imagine reruns of The Muppet Show were still everywhere. I've heard that Jim Henson wasn't too big on selling sugary cereal to kids, so I'm kind of surprised he okayed this. Henson and company clearly had fun with it, though.
From what I recall, it was discontinued around late 1989 because General Mills and Post got into a Spat regarding its Recipe. General Mills had used the same formula for a New Cereal that it had just started test marketing called " Apple Cinnamon Cheerios". Also, it was alleged that Croonchy Stars tasted a bit to similar to The Super Popular Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Of course to GM, that would mean Opposition and Trade Secret Patent Infringement Allegations against Post, so it was pulled from the market at the very end of the 80s.
@@CerealTimeTV Its what I remember. I DO remember people saying Croonchy Stars tasted similar to Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I was in Kindergarten when I saw A classmate of mine eat some around April of 1989, and she commented that it taste like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. In the days before the Public Internet, Word-of-Mouth and Blind Test Tests were fairly common. So it is almost highly likely that Post got a C&D from General Mills and pulled it from the market. That's what I meant when I say "alleged".
Where was I when this came out?? Swedish Chef was awesome!! (My Dad sold Volvos at the time, so we were into all things Swedish) And you are spot-on about the Swedish Chef being not on any show in 1988. How DO you come up with these unopened 27 year old cereals?!? And btw Gabe, this is your best video to date !!! Great humor, snippets of commercials, and chock-full of fun information!
You do realize, there's probably some avid Muppets collector out there watching this video, going, D: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Also, if it's not already on your list, or you haven't already done it, Crispy Critters Cereal, mayhaps?
+Ian Kane I saw it, but it doesn't really get me excited. Looks like Cocoa Puffs with marshmallows. I'll think about it, but it might be awhile before I get to it.
I'd be all over it! But apparently I'm in the minority. Sir Grapefellow wasn't a hit back in the day so I think cereal companies understand that the market for grape cereal is too small.
My family was OBSESSED with this cereal. Fond memories of it.

There is a fun video of the Swedish Chef performing Popcorn, worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
I STILL remember how great that cereal tasted!
Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige! Sverige!

Muppet Babies brought back so many memories! And Rowlf the dog would be a great cereal mascot! #myfav
+Jessie Faucher I loved that show. I bet the song is stuck in your head now. :)
Should’ve said “Stay Croonchy” instead of “Stay Crunchy” as a Muppet joke for this video at the end of the video.
Ja!
My favorite muppet is Ralph the dog as I remember in the muppet babies show he loved to play music also he reminds me of my guide dog Rolf!! Thank you for posting this video gaberial love it

Ive got to try it now!
That cereal was available until 1992. One of my favorite cereals. They also did have a muppet babies cereal back in 87/88

Statler and Waldorf are my favorite muppets too
Swedish Chef is the best muppet ever!
l use to love alphabet, sugar bear cereal, and honey comb.

I was just watching the Swedish chef on RUclips the other day. So stupid it's funny.
omg i remember this cereal, it tasted so good.
Ja!
Did you know that there was a cereal similar to Croonchy Stars, it's only around during Christmas time, and it's called Cinnamon Star Crunch.
and don't forget the Dark Crystal movie by Mr Jim Henson 1:04
Id eat Dark Crystal cereal!!!
@@squidracerX are you sure there is a dark Crystal cereal
In Mexico they had cereal with Muppet Babies on them
My favorite Muppet is Sam the Eagle. If they made a cereal with him as the mascot, I'm sure it will be America-themed.
+powerpup97 I love Sam! He's great in the new Muppet show on ABC too.
He scared the hell out of me as a kid. :(
I guess that's understandable with his black, thick eyebrows and deep voice.
Randy Miller III I always thought Sweetums was a little scary looking.
If they bring back fraggle rock for a reboot they should make a cereal like cröonchy stars
I had this Ceral it was very Tasty
GONZO!!! Was my favorite muppet, also beaker...although they should’ve named him “tweaker” he was high strung! But very funny 😆
I remember this cereal. Never tried it though. What would you say it compares to taste wise?
The Cinnamon Stars that CTC released around the holidays. Or that Dora cereal that was out awhile ago.
1:01 that picture of sesame street is actually from the japanese co production of sesame street

+sheepwolf2004 Whoa, nice work choosing two obscure Muppets. :)
I love the muppets bring back this cereal please. Also the muppet show is coming to Disney plus I’m watching this to build up on my hype.
I heard. I have all the original muppet show episodes, but glad they will be streaming now for others to see
My favorite muppet is Oscar the grouch from Sesame Street and the 5 main fraggles from fraggle rock
can you review smurfberry crunch
+Henry Arteaga It's on the list. I'll get to it soon, just not sure when...
Oh man, I wish I kept a box of that! It's practically gold. Fave Muppet has to go to Kermit of course, but other than him, Animal and Gonzo!
+agltbialik Animal cracks me up. He's funny on the new show on ABC too.

So many Muppets to choose from. I wonder what a Statler & Waldorf cereal would be. Hm...
+Chadwick F Oh yeah, and maybe an Animal cereal that just explodes all over the place like shaken champagne when you open the box.
+Chadwick F Lol! That's perfect for Animal.
Can't remember the taste too well now, but I know it was very, VERY good.
Sverige!

1:06 There making a reboot of Muppet Babies.
They are? Hmm, not sure how I feel about that. Not a fan of the Ducktales one. Some things are just better left alone.
I like your tasting in Muppets. My top five are Animal, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Rowlf, and Sam the Eagle
Why did you open old cereals preserve them
Why? What's the benefit of preserving them? It's more fun to share them with the world.
Cereal Time TV because you I don't want you to barf all over your studio
omg my mom use to buy this for me
In the new day actually made a new muffin babies with the chef and meep and with with the doggy but they don't remember to doggy
can you do a video on kellogs tresor cereal?
+Ella Saar I don't have a box of Tresor because we don't have that one here in the US. But I'll see if I can track one down.
+Cereal Time TV you are the best! i watch all of your videos!! love from sweeden
Whoa! Sweden? That's awesome!

Thanks for confirming that about Swedish Chef. So weird they put him on cereal back in 1988.
Its such a shame this cereal wasn't a big hit. It's exactly how I would design a cereal marketing campaign right now !!!
Gonzo just because I remember the muppets baby’s

Did you know the Swedish chef was part of the muppets tsum tsum collection that came out today
What's the tsum tsum collection?

Good god I didn't know I had my own cereal
can you please do kung fu panda 3 cereal? that just came out I'm not kidding
+Ian Kane I saw it, but it doesn't really get me excited. Looks like Cocoa Puffs with marshmallows. I'll think about it, but it might be awhile before I get to it.
Then... what cereal you're going to do next?
It's a secret every week. For me to know and for you to find out. ;)
Oscar the grouch
I'd like to see a cereal with Gonzo or Animal. Gonzo Grape? Animal could be Fruit Punch?
Gonzo Grape?! Don't play with my emotions like that! 😮
Ha! A grape cereal is indeed needed. Why not make a Grape Crush cereal, they made Orange and Root Beer Pop Tarts.
I'd be all over it! But apparently I'm in the minority. Sir Grapefellow wasn't a hit back in the day so I think cereal companies understand that the market for grape cereal is too small.
Ehh, what do they know? By the way, do you own a copy of The Great American Cereal Book?
I sure do!

Swedish Chef would be considered politically incorrect today.
