I laughed out loud as soon as I saw Richard... Posting the comments at the beginning made it feel kind of personal and intimate. Like you're sharing with me and our friends. Finding this on RUclips has been such a gift. Both of you are so warm and I find a lot of connection with you as you gab, pontificate, and lay it out on any topic. Very much drawing an audience that shares the same interests and intelligence as their questions convey. Thank you for being a thought provoking and delightful conversation in my week, it gives me a lot. Regards from the PacNorthWest of the States
Re: what Richard is saying about TV budgets - I've heard the same thing said about Hollywood budgets; all the mid budget films (so popular for the last decades of the 20th century) have gone and studios seem obsessed with only tent pole movies which is why they're losing so much money now. Not every film can be a blockbuster.
I've heard other people, who follow that industry closely, say the same thing. The studios only really want the huge hitters, the franchise starters or the franchise sequels. I think it was Michelle Pfeiffer (back in the 90's) who said she wanted to do a small budget piece and they wanted her for a blockbuster. The only way they'd make the small one is if she agreed to the blockbuster. They don't care for less profit, they always want more profit and wrongly believe that spending more is the way to get it. I vaguely remember something similar said about the UK music charts. One of the girl bands at the time had some big hits but not a new number 1 and the publisher said if you're next song isn't number 1, you're done. No idea if it's true but it reminds me of that.
@@callum9999 Yes, heard it here too. I was thinking of Dan Murrell's move channel as that is someone else I follow and he mentions budget quite a bit too. He's gone much deeper than they do here but that fits his channel.
I know the NDA thing was mentioned in the context of American celebrities. It's worth noting that NDAs have no substantively supporting case law in the UK and they're not really worth as much as the people wanting them may say.
I imagine Alastair Campbell & Rory Stewart being in a relationship much like Morecambe & Wise, living together platonically & sharing a double-bed at night...
24:44 Ah, it all makes sense now... Richard has had a huge makeover for pub week, to be unveiled on The One Show. That's the real reason camera remains off this week.
I thought Richard said 'Yah' at first to have a sly dig at Marina, but then realised he was talking about Gernany and meant Ja😂 I know she's posh but I've never heard anyone say yah before and always assumed it was a myth built around the old 'Sloane Ranger' stereotype. Anyone who wants an insight (not really) of Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes should watch the brilliant Star Stories episode. In fact just watch the entire series, it's absolutely hilairous and available on All 4. It ran from 2006-2008 tucked away late night on Channel 4, starring the likes of Kevin Bishop, Steve Edge, Holly Wells (her impression of Nicole Kidman is brilliant played like an Ocker with no social graces), Daisy Beaumont etc. Another highlight was the Take That episode, where Howard doesn't speak but instead sounds like Chewbacca.
I got something through Australian border control that I shouldn’t have*, simply by also bringing in a sandwich. They were so fixated on the sandwich that they didn’t realise they should be seizing the rest as well. * nothing illegal, just prescriptions I wasn’t meant to bring in.
I might buy Lauren Sanchez's book from an independent book shop.... Unironically. I have never watched nothing to declare but I'm watching it (on Sky). Do you think they'd do that as the paid promotion?
Hi Marina, since the Graun has stopped allowing comments for your (and Crace's) columns I thought I'd waste my digital breath here: You cane across as an apologist for Charlotte Owens in your recent piece. Just because 200 'Lords' are and have been worse people than she, that doesn't make it right. And lauding her turning up often as something to respect - just do one. We all know how she landed her peerage. I expect better from you, although I probably shouldn't.
Could it be another case of Aussie stealing (or indeed licensing) a NZ idea? Border Security NZ debuted in 2002 and ran until 2023. Also a ratings juggernaut (or being NZ, a ratings large van)
Australia here, border security is exactly what is mentioned. No food to declare, everything they have is food, but it’s usually extreme. Disgustingly so.
hey - when im in the car i always listen to talksport, and when the family go to bed i watch newsnight. AND when i am working from home i listen to your podcast (just caught up back catalogue) - less stereotypes please 🙂
There's some really useful info in here about publishing, but why must Richard keep saying 'bought' when he means 'brought'? He's supposed to be a writer for goodness sake!
Yes I love the Aussie and UK airport customs shows. The Canada ones aren’t bad, but not a fan of the US ones, maybe because of crap experiences with the US customs!🙄
The half-arsed decoration of the room Marina is in screams corporate disinterest. Obviously, Goalhanger has more important things to think about. 😄😄😄😄😄

Never cared for Swift myself but I've always thought everything about her and around her was manufactured. So it wouldn't surprise me if her relationships are manufactured too. After all, how else is she going to get material for her next album.

Richards had so much botox his face doesnt even move! 😂
😂 that got me!
Ahhh, Richard is lovely even when his face doesn’t move at all
Also, his lower face is ENORMOUS.
As Harry Hill would say "he got a big faaace"
A RUclips crossover that I would love to see is Richard Osman doing Hot Ones. He should incorporate that into his US book promotion tour.
Not remotely a big enough star
Love how Marina suddenly has multiple camera angles and Richard has a static plate 😂
Next time they have a problem with the camera, I wish they would use a puppet as a stand in.
Brilliant💙uk
9:12 When it cut to the picture of Richard Osman for him to say 'hmm' I cracked up. 🤣

Richard obviously going heavy on the yoga. Very centred. Very still.

OK thats hilarious
I think the film American Sweethearts touched on the fake relationship for PR topic too. Think it had John Cusack and Catherine Zeta Jones
JLo and Owen Wilson had a similar movie recently called “Marry Me”.
That "Border Security: Australia's Front Line" is known as "Nothing to Declare" blows my Australian mind.
Richard practicing for a new, "The Rest Is, How To Sell More Books", podcast? Fiendishly clever!
And the thing about Jamie Oliver that you never got around to talking about. Even though you mentioned it twice. Naughty! 😮

How do books get priced?
"by and large" count at 3 so far this episode
What do u mean i am not allowed to bring apples, dirt, a raccoon and cocaine from my country ?
Disappointed there was no mention of the children's film, Fly Me to the Moon, which did the flies in space concept back in 2008.

Oh my goodness !!! LOL
Well done Editor (s)

A missed opportunity to create Richard's AI double a la Peter Cushing in Rogue One 😆
Presumably you had technical issues with the mics also - the sound is atrocious.
I can't listen to this, Marina's audio is really jarring.
Wow it really is bad
It's an aggressive auto leveling on her mic. The wrong setting on Adobe Audition can cause this.
What's with the constant gasping for air?
I absolutley love nothing to declare. Especially when they get food confiscated. No idea why. 😂
Lauren Sanchez, Glenn Powell - all the friends of the podcast getting mentions today 😁

Is there such a thing as a podmance, and would Marina and Richard like to give it a go?
Ouch! The sound of Marina's breath intake is really loud on this!
All a bit fff and ssss and saliva-ey.
Try getting through NZ customs with an apple in your handbag! We have beagles trained to sniff out fruit.
